Let's talk about the best footie team in Europe

Deportivo La Coruna that is. Together with Valencia they seem well on their way to challenge the tired power-structure of Spanish footie and apparently are unbeatable in Europe, see yesterday's stylish demolition of Arsenal. So hot contenders for the cup or are they going to pull another St.Etienne (the final is in bloody Glasgow again ;)

Personally I curse the day Real let Victor go and didn't buy Tristan when he was for the taking.

they looked bloomin' impressive last night on the highlights. Both goals were excellent especially the second where the Arsenal defence (lately so good) were made to look like a Sunday league team.

And their defence looked pretty solid too when Arsenal were pounding them, mind you I do think Molina should have been sent off.

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think, Freddie pushed the ball out of the way, collission with the keeper was inevitable, it would have been harsh to send him off. Yellow card and penalty is enough. But, then I am a spurs supporter :)

jel --, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but Jel, there wasn't even a yellow card!

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, he shoulda got a yellow.

jel --, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank god for last night. It's shut quite a few people at work up I can tell you. Trevor Brooking was raving (not literally, that's too weird an image) about Deportivo on the radio. He kept on saying how rubbish they were making Arsenal look. Get in Trev!

Jonnie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He was right too. They were awful, or rather Deportivo were very very good.

Tonight = Jari's chance to shine

Saturday = El Super Classico! Tapas and Rioja - lovely. Predictions Omar?

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I predict lots of European heads of state in the director's box, their big summit's just up the road.

PM, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really looking forward to Saturday, although I fear Barca will get a right going over. Is it at the Camp Nou?

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it is. I fear you may be right. Apparently Real Madrid haven't won there since 1983 or something. During the short shorts period anyway.

PM, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Awesome. The speeed, the passing and the movement, mouthwatering stuff.

stevo, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As one Spanish paper put it: Valeron plays in a state of grace these days. I didn't see the whole game but the passing, positioning and movement was incredible.

As for this week-end's game, it's at The Church Of Satan where Real have indeed not won since 1983. Barca look beatable at the moment and Real seem to have found some balance now Solari is looking to become a permanent first team player but somehow Barca play their best games against Real. Maybe Liverpool can do some preliminary damage tonight and then we'll twist the knife when their on their knees. Ahem. I always write it off as a calculated loss.

As an aside: did anyone see emperor Totti's work of art against Lazio on Sunday?

Omar, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alas I missed it. Seeing Lazio stuffed by their arch-rivals would have brought some much needed cheer. However I'm more disappointed to have missed Real Madrid’s centenary celebrations Omar ;)

stevo, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can see Caesar's glorious work of art here:

Lazio -Roma

Deportivo are also a nice team to play with in Fifa 2002.

Omar, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best put down of the season so far. Phil Thompson referring to Kluivert and De Boer's criticism of Liverpool before last night's game - "Nobody likes being criticised, particularly by players who will be in Disneyland this summer on their holidays rather than the World Cup in Japan".

Jonnie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked that one. Well, that wasn't too thrilling a game was it? But did you hear the booing when the little rabbit was taken off? my oh my those Barca fans really know how to be mardy gets.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Totti's goal was magnificent. Much better than watching FA Cup highlights.

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hasselbaink got an amazing hat trick last night......sorry Jonnie. But christ, two class goals and a nice header. It got me thinking, how many seasons in a row has he scored upwards of 25 or 30 goals? And if so why doesn't he play for Holland more often. Or does he, lately? I mean, it's not as if he's a poacher either, he scores great goals all the time, he's good on the ball, and sets things up aswell.

Ronan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because the Dutch know he's a cunt : (

Jonnie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he doesn't play beautifully, that's his problem.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That lamer tarricco got sent off again. Anyway, I'm just enjoying the close season now, didn't England do well in the cricket!

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hasselbaink is a beast. But he needs to leave Chelsea if he's ever to achieve anything. Imagine if any other top 4 team signed him.. it's OVER man. If i was in charge of Man Utd I would break the bank, there's no risk in that signing.

Bob Zemko, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard a rumopur about Newcastle being after him yesterday, but how much would he cost? a bloody fortune.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quite right jel. I'm going to focus on cricket until September now.

Jonnie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

naughty Mr Tarricco is facing an 8 game ban teehee, he may as well start his summer holiday now, let's hope it's somewhere grotty like Prestatyn.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Stephen Carr is out for the rest of the season.

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are spurs down the dumper?

how clear are you boys off relegation?

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clear of relegation I think...just need 1 or 2 wins to be sure. Anyway, who knows they still might get into the top six! jel = optimist.

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We're just winding down for the summer.

Does anybody know exactly what happened in Rome after the match last night? The reports that I've read are very fuzzy.

Jonnie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It seems that Batistuta smacked one of the Gala players, it all kicked off and then the police waded in, to the extent that the Gala president called them fascist animals. A normal Galatasary outing then really.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What a strange story, Batistuta always strikes me as a very calm player, never loses his cool. The way it happened is also strange: the Turkish player came up to shake his hands after the game and Bati just punched him and then all hell broke loose.

Omar, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Capello pulled somebody's hair!!!

PM, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think a comment was made in Turkish, that was understood by one of the Roma players.

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Way to go Fabio! There was an article in today's paper about it and the above seems correct. Lima used to play in Turkey and understood some of the Gala comments so he shared them with his Roma teammates. Not quite sure what could have so riled Batistuta though. Gala should sign Taricco.

Jonnie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robbie Savage would be a god to these people.
