The ILE juggling thread

I'm kinda surprised there's no juggling thread here already, but if there is then search isn't finding it. Anyway, I learned to juggle 3 balls as a kid, and 2 in one hand, and a couple of easy tricks, but that was about it - I think I was put off at that point by a mixture of seeing how much better other people were than me, and wanting to avoid more geeky pursuits.

Lately I've found myself picking up my juggling balls again, and it seems to be a good way of taking a relaxing break from work, so I'm keen to learn some new stuff. On the other hand, it's clear that my ability to do stuff like juggle 2 balls in one hand has declined - I can still do it, but my left hand is pretty rusty. My attempt to learn 441 a couple of evenings ago was a miserable failure, to the extent that it surprises me that I can still do a 3 ball cascade without any trouble at all - I guess things always seem much easier once you've mastered them, though.

Anyway - I can't be the only person around here who can juggle badly, and presumably some of you can juggle quite well. Who?

441?

i can do three balls. i can occasionally make them go outside, rather than inside -- is the latter what you mean by cascade? i can also grab them overhand, but only a couple of times in a row before it all goes kerflooie.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

5 balls
4 clubs
3 balls (+50 or so tricks)
2 diabolos
1 ball (i.e. contact)

er except i can't really do four clubs.

I was never the most dedicated - took me four years to learn five balls - and I don't really keep it up any more. Had an intense period of diabolism a year or two ago, learnt a few tricks with two, then gave it up again. I'd like to get back to it but I don't think I have the patience any more - all that stopping and starting, stooping over and picking up.

ledge, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

441 = a pattern in siteswap, a mathematical juggling notation. Not quite as tragic as that might seem - or as complex. http://www.juggling.org/help/siteswap/masses.html

Cascade = normal three (or other odd number) pattern. Reverse cascade = throwing from the outside instead of the inside.

wow ledge! you're the kind of person who must have heard of michael moschen but for those who haven't, you have to see this -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yiuI04Ak2w

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

I hadnt actually seen that before - pretty cool!

He's also the guy who sticks his arms through in front of David Bowie to do all the crystal ball tricks in Labyrinth.

ledge, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

I have seen ian juggle.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

2 diabolos! \m/

There was a time when I was getting to 7 balls and 5 clubs.. but not solid at it at all (best run is probably about 20 catches with 7!).

Used to be a right geek about it! Can you do the "shower" (5 1)?

2 in one hand and 441 etc just takes practice i think, it's almost an entirely different skill to cascade patterns.

ken c, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

michael moschen was david bowie's stunt double at the labyrinth!

ken c, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

he was also good at reading upthread!

ledge, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

moschen does this insane thing in the video that clip is taken from, where he's walking through a park with a couple of rubber balls in his hands and sees a park bench. he stops about 10 feet from it and ponders it. he looks at one of the balls in his hand. then he throws the ball, hard, so that it hits the concrete under the bench, bounces up sharply towards the underside of the bench seat, bounces back down to hit the concrete and springs back, right into moschen's hand. then of course he begins juggling this way. it's like, ok, you sold your soul somehwhere along the line.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

sorry ledge!

ken c, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Ah that's an old trick, doesn't need a special throw or anything, just works as if by magic. You can do it yourself if you have a bouncy ball and a kitchen table lying around. xp.

do you still practise, ken?

ledge, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

i hadn't for a couple of years but last summer i taught my friend how to do passing (with balls) and that was so much fun that I actually started to do play again!

club passing is awesome fun - while in uni we got picking up dropped clubs and throwing them back into the pattern down to a fine art.. oh the joys

ken c, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

i can't do a shower, no. i might try learning soon - i guess i need to pick one simple thing to learn and stick with it, really.

I can't even do 4mm - and I really did put some effort into learning it. And, I'm away for the w/end, I've packed some juggling balls for the first time in aaaages... but I've only brought 3! What use is that? Considering I own over 30...

ledge, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

a weekend of rubenstein's revenge?

ken c, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

I can't help noticing there don't seem to be any old jugglers.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure i remember mart1n sk1dm0r3 mentioning juggling before..

ken c, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

wtf

sunny successor, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

OK, it's been so long since I've tried to learn anything new that I'm not even sure what I should be juggling with! I've got 3 of what I imagine are 125g thuds, and I seem to have lost everything else over the years. In particular, I'd like something I could practice with in my office at work, and in the interests of not pissing off the people below me/breaking anything, I'm guessing that something like these:

http://www.butterfingers.co.uk/Ko-Bespoke/stockdetails.asp?product=BALLS/LAZYDAZEBEANBAGS/0/LAZ001

or these:

http://www.oddballs.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1190_1376_1526

is the way to go? I seem to remember learning 3 balls with something like these, so I guess they can't be terrible - my only concern is that they might be a lot lighter than I'm used to now. Any thoughts?

toby, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yuk! Too light, horrid shape = nasty to catch and throw. If you really are worried about noise then I guess they would be quieter, otherwise I'd stick with thuds or similar. Those Henry's superior ones look nice.

ledge, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, you really want something spherical to learn trickier stuff so that they're not awkward to catch.. ideal ones are ones not filled up rock solid so they have a bit of give when they fall (and easier to catch to boot)

ken c, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

Or just throw 'em at a wall a few hundred times until they've softened up a bit.

ledge, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

haha yeah! we played catch with one in school once in the field and by the end i was first a bit upset that it had become tattered.. and then "hey! no this is good!"

ken c, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

this looks pretty tricky:

what's the most that anyone "normal" can do? 7?

toby, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

I know an "old" juggler, he's an occasional performer with my dance group-thingy. In his 60s, probably. And he juggles fire, too! I don't know about technical expertise, I'm not sure he was ever RAZOR-SHRP, but kids do love him.

Laurel, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

three balls, no tricks.
it was a fleeting childhood passion circa 1996.

ian, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

what's the most that anyone "normal" can do? 7?

Define normal :)

I think *anyone* could do three. I think most people could do five if they put in the effort. Perhaps it's the same for 7 - I like to think I would be able to learn it. But it would be a hell of a lot of effort, and maybe anyone who's willing to spend that much time on such a monotonous task is already beyond the bounds of normal!

ledge, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

Bought balls. Up to two, and they keep colliding mid-air. 'Er indoors is on the sofa pissing herself.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 9 August 2008 07:50 (seventeen years ago)

Smooth scoops with the hands, throwing on the inside and catching on the outside. Concentrate on the throws not the catches, is absolutely u+k. If you have nice throws then the catches will come naturally, if you're reaching for the catches then the throws will go all to hell.

ledge, Saturday, 9 August 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Ta for the tips. Balls still going everywhere.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 9 August 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

1. get balls
2. ???
3. juggle

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 10 August 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

I can juggle standard 3 balls. I haven't done it for a while, but I always found it very relaxing.

krakow, Sunday, 10 August 2008 07:31 (seventeen years ago)

I've only ever done 20-something catches of 5 - I don't think I really have more in me. I'm pretty decent with 3, though: Rubensteins & etc, plus loads of homebaked stuff.

AA you should do this, it's really fun.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 10 August 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

1. get balls
2. juggle at awesome circus show
3. have hot chick waiting for you in your bed
4. post to ilx

ten months pass...

The Gandini Juggling Project at the National Theatre this week:
http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/?lid=48852

I'm away for the weekend, bah, will try to catch them on weds tho.

last night i dreamt somebody shoved me (ledge), Monday, 6 July 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

I learned how to juggle (3 balls) at a renaissance fair years ago. I can do it pretty well.

what would be the next steps in a juggler's education (5 balls?) and how large are the difficulty margins?

iatee, Monday, 6 July 2009 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

can you do tricks? learn tricks. learn 4 before 5! it's 'just' two in one hand, in each hand. if 3 takes about a week or two to learn, then 4 might take a month or two. 5 is a longer term project. if yer very dedicated it might take a few months. i am very undedicated so it took a few years.

The Gandini Juggling Project at the National Theatre this week

NEXT week. Idiot.

last night i dreamt somebody shoved me (ledge), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

I've started to try and juggle again. I've been able to juggle 3 balls at various points in my life but never really practiced enough to be able to do it for any amount of time. These days I can go for about a minute before the whole system fails.

Really, all of this is an attempt to start joggling. I think joggling is the future for me.
