I'm thinking about possibly throwing a party to raise money for a charity.
I think it would be fun and meaningful.
But I don't know what charity I should hypothetically give the collected money to.
I don't know how much money I'll actually be able to raise maybe 500-1000 dollars?
I want to find a charity where that amount of money will actually make a big difference.
Also, some charity's only aid people in the short term, and don't actually help people in the long run or really change things.
I would like something that could potentially have a lasting impact, something that addresses the root causes of problems...

Take a look at Heifer.org or Kiva.org. Both places that attempt to address the root causes of poverty and hunger, and also funnel as much donor $$ to recipients as possible. Also, search ILX for the thread about sleeve going to Peru - his gf has I think set up a non-profit to fund a great stove project for impoverished Peruvians.

I also like the idea behind ModestNeeds.org, but I don't know if it lends itself to your money-raising idea.
― Jaq, Friday, 1 February 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
Heifer was the first one I thought of. Also I don't know what orgs are best but you might want to look into some kind of micro-credit non profit if you are interested in the "helping someone help himself" idea
― Hurting 2, Friday, 1 February 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)
Plus Heifer sends you a magazine full of pictures of cute children with cute animals
Also, doesn't roxymuzak's sister have a non-profit to help low-income women with pregnancy terminations? I'm not sure what to search for, but I remember something about an auction/fundraiser a few months back?

If you were me and you wanted to set a date for the part at say, April 10th...
How long would you wait before sending out invitations?
I'm just trying to think about the logistics of this, I've only thrown like one party in my adult life, and never anything like this...
― Colin_C., Friday, 1 February 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know - maybe a month's notice?

abortion funding? or NIJOLI in THE NATION
Here's nijoli's charity. I like it way better than the idea of donating to NARAL.

My friend had a party to raise $$$ for a friend's heart surgery, and they had an art auction, where 30 or so people were asked to make a piece of art (all buds, about 100 people came). They did pen and paper bidding, and at the end of the night most had sold for $5 to $25 dollars (they were just drawings and quick watercolors, mostly). It ended up making $400, just that part of the party alone, and everyone thought it was very fun.

Médecins Sans Frontières/doctors without borders does good work
― tremendoid, Friday, 1 February 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)
Nijoli's fund rocks, I felt way better about donating there than sending dues to the ACLU or anything like that.
If you're not sure about it being an abortion fundraiser, pick out any other kind of small local group - a night shelter, a soup kitchen, etc.. where the money's going right back into helping people and any small amount will be a boon.

I know what you're saying but some people need help in the short term.
I like Médecins Sans Frontières both short term and long term aims.

Anyone have any good or bad things to say about the Red Cross? I've been donating to them but picked them kinda randomly really.

You've got to feel sorry for the *real* Human Fund though. It looks like it does good things.

I am in this situation! I have about £1000 to give away - I really like the idea of kiva and am going to use it but as you get the money back it'll probably be from extra money.
I am pretty open to anything? I am thinking fairly seriously about sightsavers.org, I also thought about clean water or something like that? Or is there a charity that in some meaningful way tries to save loads of animal lives, like, by buying a bit of rainforest or something? Or maybe something really unglamorous that doesn't get the money it needs?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

My community radio station really needs money. If you happen to care deeply about the cultural landscape of Martha's Vineyard, I suggest sending money to us. We also stream on the internet at wvvy.org so you could even enjoy it from afair. I play Scott Seward's mixes a lot. We're not ending hunger or solving any environmental problems, though.

The King Boy Pato Booze, Cocaine & Hookers Fund is always looking for new donations to keep the alcohol, drug dealing and prostitution industries alive.

if it helps my birthcert is 'dara' and that was ok until we moved for the third or fourth time and there was a girl in my class also called dara and i went home and had a very serious talk with dad and we agreed that while phonetically things would just have to be borne i needn't suffer the indignity of getting my copies mixed up with a GIRL'S and 24 years later it cost me an extra twenty quid on a passport renewal. I dunno is there a moral tbh.
