Punch In The Face

When was the last time you got one?

Tonight I was out and on my way to the bathroom and some guy was bugging literally everyone who was in the queue. He was hassling each person in turn, culminating with”what are you going to do about it” over and over. When it came to my turn, he stood right in my face and said “I’m not normally like this”.

Despite it being a bad time to come up with a great response, I said: “You’re not normally nice? Or you’re not normally a cunt?” I went to the bathroom and thought nothing of it. But as soon as I opened the door, he was waiting and punched me in the face quite hard. He then ran out of the club.

What’s weird to me is how, afterwards, I felt somewhere between wanting a gang of friends to hurt this person, and not caring. Hitting someone isn’t really defensible, yet no matter how liberal you are I think it incites a violent spark in you. This is probably the worst thing about it, it makes you feel how you don’t want to feel, like someone you aren’t.

I just got home now and my nose is really swollen and cut and stuff. I don't really feel angry or violent, I just hate that some guy who was acting like an asshole managed to get away with it.

Anyway it's good to let this out here, even if it's a boring story! I feel fine physically and my nose will be fine too in a day or two.

when i was 10 or something some slightly older kid punched me in the face because he thought i was laughing at him (i wasn't, but perhaps i should have been?). i was more stunned than hurt, i guess..

Also in college a buddy punched me in the ear really fucking hard when he was shitfaced coz i accidentally flicked something in his eye.

W4LTER, Friday, 1 February 2008 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

kind of like your story ronan, except we were having perfectly nice outdoors streetcorner random drunks walking home from pub type casual conversation and laughing and whatnot and WHAM one of them socks me in the nose at the utter bewilderment of everyone else including his friend. so I eventually fought back a bit and we smacked each other around and then a cabbie came and hauled him & his dumbstruck friend off to wherever. I was extremely upset for hours afterwards and woke up the next day no worse for wear but still very much pissed off at the world. then again that last bit about the waking up is pretty typical.

El Tomboto, Friday, 1 February 2008 04:50 (seventeen years ago)

I've never been in a fight, or even been punched. My sister doesn't count.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 1 February 2008 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

got punched in the face by a drunken dickhead who was hassling our group in a youth hostel, of all places, a few months back. he ran off but even if he hadn't i probably wouldn't have done anything, he would have fucked me up. like you say Ronan, the worst thing about it was just the knowledge that this utter cunt had done something horrible and hadn't paid for it, and probably would again. i console myself with the knowledge that he is surely deeply miserable and alone, hence his need to hang around hassling people in youth hostels.

middle school. i didn't blame him though, i agreed to meet him after school to settle our ridiculous homeroom beef. i pretty much expected to get my ass kicked and did. black eye and forehead contusion for a few days. decided face-punching activities weren't my thing, have been lucky to avoid them since.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 1 February 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

It's weird, I've always been a pretty mild mannered guy, but the few times I've gotten into scraps, it's usually the other guy who got the worst of it. (Broke my brother's nose once, ducked into his punch an he broke a knuckle on my head, etc.) The last bareknuckled punch in the face I got was the worst one, back in high school. Some guy was pissed off at me for playing hard at something as stupid as a P.E. flag football game, and swung me around and suckerpunched me in the mouth. I had braces at the time, and it shredded the inside of my mouth up pretty good. He didn't even have a good reason for doing it.

its weird but now that i think about it id guess about a third-to-half my friends actually have been punched in the face at one time or another. ive come close, i guess, but its never happened, & ive always wondered what itd be like to smash someone else in the face & feel good about doing it. ill be perfectly happy if i never find out.

deeznuts, Friday, 1 February 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

Not surprising:: I'm pretty sure every time I've punched or been punched alcohol has been involved.

Except once in high school when I punched this guy in the face who was being a v big smart arse.

W4LTER, Friday, 1 February 2008 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

last time i punched anyone in the face was also in middle school. friend of mine was being a dick. one sort of sidearm fist to his eye. he didn't hit back, i think he was too surprised. he's a scientologist now.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 1 February 2008 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

In high school a friend of mine got wind that I had been dating his ex-girlfriend, so he came over to my house at 2am (not too uncommon, I was the one with the cool mom) with my ex-girlfriend, walked right into my room, pushed me up against the wall, and punched me extremely hard in the face a few times.

I mostly remember that any pain I should have felt was completely dampened by how surprising it was that I was actually being punched in the face.

Then my mom walked in and he started crying.

He was not a good dude.

Was anyone at Union Pool last Thursday? Two friends of mine were simultaneously sucker punched by two other dudes for no reason. Bouncers apparently stepped in right away and removed the punchers.

Hurting 2, Friday, 1 February 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)

It's easy to underestimate its effect in terms of shaking you up. It's bad enough having your personal space invaded by someone talking right in your face: a punch is a real physical shock.

Last proper punch in the face was in 1998 I think, I'd just turned up at a club for a friend's birthday party. He'd been drinking all day and I turned up, wished him happy birthday and was promptly punched in the face on the dancefloor. He then accused me of persuading his ex-girlfriend to dump him, which I do not recall doing.

To be fair, this was during his year of going psycho and punching all his friends in the face, and at least my head wasn't bounced off the curb like one unlucky guy. We're now good friends again and he's apologised about 500 times in the last decade.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2008 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

the last time i was punched in the face:

at a house party -- i was talking to an incredibly short and tiny girl from dundee -- she said something and i was like "give me five" and held out my palm, and she's like "wha?" so i explain to her what giving five is, hold out my hand again, and she lands the full weight of her fist into my cheekbone. she was so short she almost had to jump!

Hitting someone isn’t really defensible, yet no matter how liberal you are I think it incites a violent spark in you. This is probably the worst thing about it, it makes you feel how you don’t want to feel, like someone you aren’t.

even in the above situation this was true. this was a tiny girl and for a split second i wanted to fucking slam her head against the wall. instead i said "OK, my turn. hold out your hand." she was obviously insane, so she did. i reared back and gave her the hardest five it is possible to give. so she hit me again and that's when i walked away and told her boyfriend to take her home.

I was a bit of a drunk prick in college, and got punched a lot. I don't like fighting, but I didn't mind punches (though most were not to the face :~(

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:17 (seventeen years ago)

some robber dudes punched me in the face a couple times start of this year - fuck knows why as I was giving them all my stuff!

I think all I did was when they got my ipod and phone, they then asked me where my wallet was, I said "oh come on! you've got all.." then SMASH in the eye! and then was shoved in a bush and then another punch.

It was a weird feeling, kind of exhilarating in a strange way. I hadn't been punched since like I was 14 - in a fight with a friend, I thought I won when I got him in a headlock for ages and then i let go and walked away and then i turned around he was there and SMACK... that was when i realised "oh THAT'S how fighting works" by then my nose was like bleeding like fuck. after that i was all like "omg i'm going to get so strong and then next time i'll know what i am doing".. but i never really got round to it.

ken c, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

Rubyredd, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:28 (seventeen years ago)

The worst is people who've never been beaten up, who think they'd just shrug it off if they got beaten up because they're so mentally tough, and proceed to Scrappy Doo their way through life and somehow inexplicably manage to not get battered twice a week

Well, second worst after people who actually beat people up I guess

That mong guy that's shit, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

I think it was 2002, or maybe late 2001. Outside Filthy McNasty's in Kings Cross. I had a row with my ex-gf, who stormed off. I tipped over a (empty) table in frustration at ridiculous situation. Landlord came out and punched me in the face about 5 times, I for some reason just stood there going "stop hitting me" until he did.

Then me and a friend went to look for a taxi home, some Kiwi homeless/junkie dude started hassling us for money, I told to fuck off and leave us alone, and he hit me as well! Twice in one night, brilliant.

Then we got home to find ex-gf had kicked the door in cos she didn't have her key on her (we were sharing a house, which was fun).

Later I found out from another friend who was a regular at Filthy McNasty's that the landlord had punched me because he thought I was part of some group who were causing trouble there earlier in the evening, and that he was really sorry about the whole thing and I was welcome back any time. I haven't been back.

I'm not defending punching someone in the face, but what first came to mind was you called him a cunt, and all he ever did to you was "stand right in your face and say “I’m not normally like this”.

Well to be fair, beforehand he was having a go also, just random stuff to every person going in, eg "what the fuck are you going to say, you've to say something now, what have you got to say for yourself" etc etc.

I probably shouldn't have called him a cunt but I did try and ignore him and just look at the ground as he began with all that, then when he started with the "I'm not normally like this" I couldn't resist a smart comment.

The way I see it if he wants to make fun of people verbally then he should keep it on a verbal level.

Or if he does really want to punch me in the face, then AT LEAST do it when I'm standing up face to face, not ambush me on my way out of the bathroom.

somehow i've never been punched in the face. in the stomach (fuck me, yes, what a way to disable someone -- i wasn't expecting it and i just doubled up, gasping) and the chest (by my dad!), but never the face. touch wood. or the balls.

i've punched one person in the face: a guy at school when i was 16. it was absolutely the right thing to do at the time, and sorted a few things out for a few people in one fell swoop. shit punch, mind you: i sorta pulled it at the very last second because i suddenly thought: "what if i break his nose?"

verily, i'd be a crap scrapper.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

Last time I got puinched in the face, I think I was... 10?

I had people in middle school and high school threaten to punch me, but they backed down when I told them not to do that because I would then have no choice but to try to kill them. The last person I beat up was someone who was passing notes around school containing cartoons depicting my oldest brother getting hit by a truck labelled "NIGGERKILLER"; I ambushed the kid at his locker, grabbed him by the ears, smacked his head against the wall three or four times and threw him into his locker before walking back into English class. (That helped ppl take my "I will try to kill you" responses more seriously.)

(lol Ken, I was going to make a hadoken joke!)

HI DERE, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

(xpost to Grimley) Actually the last time I punched someone was in the stomach. It wasn't even a fight, just a friend who was a bit of a twunt and much given to drunken "I know martial arts" type boasts. So anyway, he stands up and said "go on, punch me in the stomach, I won't feel a thing". I'm like "I don't really wanna do this", and he says "go on, do it, I won't feel a thing", "OK then..." So I punched him, and he spent the next fifteen minutes bent double going "uurrrrggghhhhh". Then immediately after, he said "I know martial arts, watch me punch through that wall" - suffice to say that he nearly broke his hand.

I've never been in a fight. My self-defense classes suggest that taking out people's knees with a kick is the thing to do if you can't talk someone down or get away (and you are smaller & weaker), but it seems like a lot of damage for a pub brawl and I can't imagine me getting into anything really serious. So my 0-0 status probably won't change.

Laurel, Friday, 1 February 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

my biggest worries with these kicks to the knee/bollocks is what if i miss!?!? then not only have i lost the element of surprise i've also now angered the other person (assuming they're bigger and/or there are more than one of them)

and THEN there's the question, after you kicked them, do you run? or do you follow up with a figure 4 leglock?

About a year ago. I tried to kick a guy in the head and a random guy punched me to help the guy. The guy had just started an altercation with a friend of mine then fell over the bonnet of a car backing away when my friend threw a punch at him. I ran up and tried to kick him and he put his hands up to block it. The punch only grazed my eye but I had a shiner anyway. The guy who started the fight had three friends with him and my friend and I only numbered three altogether but for some reason the good samaritan guy decided he wanted a shot.

I actually got punched in the face twice by the same kid in elementary school, a year apart. The first time, prior to my first growth spurt, I fell down. The second time, when I was becoming one of the largest kids in my class and after I had taken about 6 mo. of karate, he punched me again, and I barely flinched. I then shoved him to the floor with one arm.

Since then? Once, by a douche bag I used to be friends with, in high school - like 16 years ago? i don't think since, actually. Hmm. I've got a good streak going for as lousy a temper as I have sometimes.

Aw, cute dogs. I would be walking my dogs on a leash for their safety, to be a total buttinski. But I definitely think you should try to file charges.

if he punched you in the face several times, it seems like you have the right to press charges.

some robber dudes punched me in the face a couple times start of this year - fuck knows why as I was giving them all my stuff!

I hope Ken has sufficiently detraumatized in the past two and a half years to not mind me laughing at this. Not as much as I laughed at the idea of breaking out submission moves in casual brawls, though.

I don't think I've ever been punched in the face by anyone out of infancy. I'll have to do something about that.

I can't remember any trouble since then so I must be in my longest ever period of not being punched :)

embrace the flopping? no thanks (onimo), Thursday, 22 July 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

I also have not been punched in the face since my upthread anecdote, so that must be going on 8 years now! Go me!

thanks for the advice guyz. but since i don't have any visible marks from where he punched me, nor do the dogs from where he kicked them, and the police officer this morning sounding extremely satisfied that the case was concluded, i get the feeling it's probably not worth taking this any further

i'm 2 and a half years or so and counting....i had a bit of a fracas in the pub last week, this guy walloped into me by mistake and spilled my fresh beer all over a girl who was sitting at the bar. it was quite funny as he (a big burly hooligan) said "sorry" just as i said "oh for fuck's sake" angrily. then he said "I SAID FACKIN SORRY" and I was like "don't apologise to me, you spilled a pint all over her!" then he did that and i was like still annoyed and he said "what the fack else do you want me to do" and i thought "well, fair point really, another pint would seem too strong an ask, with 3/4 of that one left, i'm still annoyed but he's right, i can't ask him to do more." no punches exchanged...

I've been punched in the face more often in Northampton than anywhere else. Three times, but one was work-related.

aside from immediate family, i've been punched once in about 18 years. had it coming too.
