I had a good bagel at a place called David's. That is all I have done.
I will have a lot of free time tomorrow. I am basically at NYU. What should I do?

Go to Mercer Street Books. On Mercer Street, just about Houston. (they have records too; much better shopping environment than the Strand.) Wander up and down St Mark's Place, maybe go to Kim's (for records/cds) or St Mark's Comics. Paul's on 2nd Avenue just off St Mark's Place has a good burger. The wings at PLUCK U are decent.
― ian, Saturday, 2 February 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)
Hummus Place
― Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 February 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)
Go to Papaya King or Gray's Papaya (both on 6th avenue near WSP) for one of the best deals available. Last I went it was still 2 dogs w/ tops (kraut & mustard pls) and a drink (try one of the fruit juices, they rule) for like $2.75 or something ridiculously cheap.
― ian, Saturday, 2 February 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)
Mamoun's on Macdougal.
^^ for falafel and lentil soup
Eat some street food, i recommend a chicken kebab WITH the hot sauce if they have it.

When i lived there with a friend in 97, for the first few weeks we didn't know anybody and couldn't find a sack of week to save our lives! First place we tried was around WSP, no luck, then scoured the LES (which still had a remoted whaff of sktechiness) and nothing. Then we tried Lex and 125th because of the song, and still nothing! We were confounded. This was New York City dammit!

― sanskrit, Saturday, 2 February 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
HAY WITE BOY
actually 125th and Lex was still pretty damn seedy . But we went mainly as an homage and booked it back home.
― wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 2 February 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)
wasnt 42nd street, esp. 8th ave. area, was the place for all the numerous drug pushers to hang out at that time?
― Zeno, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)
Port Authority, we didn't think of that.
― wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)
i rememebr walking near penn station in 1999 ,and pushers offering me drugs.
― Zeno, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)
The West Side around the Port Authority is like an oasis of seediness--some dudes playing dice threw a bunch pennies at me once when the NJ Transit bus dropped everyone off at 11th Ave.

what burger places are good for delivery? lauren?
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)
I actually had a fiesta burrito, which I had never had before. It costs the same as a 7 layer burrito. Wasn't as good!
It was a Taco Bell in Troutville, Virginia.
― roxymuzak, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)
i generally don't get burgers delivered bcz they tend to steam in the container on the way. unless you ask for it rare, you end up with a grey patty. that said, stand would be my recommendation.
― lauren, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)
Did you guys drive to NYC and back? How long was it?
― wanko ergo sum, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
Had a lobster roll at Mary's Fish Camp last week that may have been the best thing I've ever eaten ever.

if you go to mercer street books (and you should!) it's just a few blocks from there to the housing works bookshop/ cafe -- great great deals there, and it's all for a great AIDS care non-profit dealie, too.
― Mike McGooney-gal, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)
I did go there. I am not in NYC anymore. I will be back soon though.
I went to a nice chess store and a sweet bald man sold me a chessboard. That's pretty much the only thing I did outside of stand around in a studio and steal a roll of tape from Xgau's desk.
― roxymuzak, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
the outdoor seating at fairway is A+++++++++++ statue of liberty viewing foghorn sounding awesome

― lauren, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

― bell_labs, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)
it's worth a sickday! i could spend hours in the giant room that houses the cheeses/butcher/charcuterie.

(also, in the complaint dept, my "cleaned" squid still had intestines and beaks. i know how to deal w/ that but damn if it didn't make for an unwelcome last-minute surprise.)
― lauren, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)
aw, that's a legit bummer. i've never had problems with anything i've gotten there, but i have never gotten seafood.
― ian, Monday, 4 February 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

i learned how a few summers ago. mark bittman has very easy-to-follow instructions for it. not hard, just involves lots of gooshy stuff.
― lauren, Monday, 4 February 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
one of my favorite things about fairway is that the checkout people are always sooo nice and knowledgeable. they can tell which green is in the bag within .2 seconds of looking at it when i'm like, damn it took me at least a minute staring at the section to figure out which one was escarole. and they are always so friendly.
― bell_labs, Monday, 4 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)
the checkout lines were incredibly efficient. after the crazy, aggressive free-for-all of the rest of the store, it was a relief.
― lauren, Monday, 4 February 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)
they also seem to be in friendly competition with their coworkers to scan things the fastest. i hope they are well paid. i mean, they must be, considering how grumpy most grocery checkout employees are.
― bell_labs, Monday, 4 February 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
oh lauren your bad experience breaks heart! i love that place! i only get to go on friday evenings every few months, but it's never been too bad (maybe bc people have lives lol). i have not eaten there, though! lobster roll field trip, indeed!!!
