White Spirits: search & destroy

Note I said White SpiritS not Spirit.

Whilst laughing at Jeremy Bowen getting pissed on Booze last night me and Pete fell to discussing spirits. I cannot stand gin, just the smell of it is disgusting, whereas I am very fond of vodka, not averse to tequila (especially in a margerita) and tolerably keen on white rum. Not sure about triple sec never having tried it out of a cocktail.

So the 5 white spirits. Whaddya reckon?

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vodka was the first thing I ever got pissed and was sick on and I have been unable to stand it until quite recently (Finlandia wooed me back by dint of giving me a free bottle for doing research for them). It's still a bit of a last resort and I could never drink it neat (I couldn't drink any of them neat except maybe Tequila). Tequila strikes me as a novelty spirit. Triple Sec - no idea. White rum is OK but I hardly ever have it. GIN however is the GREATEST. I decided last week that from now on G+T would be my short of choice forevermore.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was sick after drinking too much gin at a party at the age of 17. I haven't been able to touch it since.

Vodka however is a wonderful drink, good with fruit juice, tonic, lemonade, in coktails, inside chocolates ....

white rum quite nice too.

What is tripple sec?

Anna, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GIN makes a man MEAN! BOOZE UP and RIOT!

Milk and Cheese, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Show off.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ph34r my p0ll skillZoR.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was amused to see that show is actually 1 of a series. I think they should call it "Getting pissed with..." and they could have a different serious reporter type each week, so "getting pissed with... kate adie" julia sommerville, etc.

Alan T, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

neat Bison grass vodka = nectar of the gods.

gin = only nice in g&t

Tequila = num num, especially Cuervo gold, but I want to try the really good stuff that costs mega-pesos a bottle

Triple sec = ??? is it flavoured with oranges?

white rum - ahhh sometimes nice with coke.

I heart booze of all kinds. except Stella.

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a somewhat sleazy and destructive element to drinking GIN that makes it supreme to vodka (getting depressed with GIN is much more MOROSE than getting depressed with the wodka), tequilla is a RARITY and therefore NOVEl to me and god knows what TRIPLE SEC (tripe sect more like) is. White rum is not as good as DARK RUM. Fetch me GIN!

MOTHERS RUIN, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is clear to me from this thread that an ILE outing to get pissed on triple sec must be organised in the near future.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vodka is too versitile to be considered as a proper drink in my opinion. Wheras as Gin. Many a night me and Tanya have spent getting tanked on Tanq. Or pissed on Gordons.

Gin & Fanta Limon = national drink of Minorce = Num Num.

Pete, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin is wonderful. The best drinks in the world are the aforementioned gin and tonic and the ALMIGHTY GIN MARTINI (shaken, stirred... WHO CARES? IT'S YUMMY GIN!).

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin and Lemon Fanta - Blimey that must be gorgeous. Off to the canteen I go, I will try this later!

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete you are living proof that gin fucks up the brain especially the part which does spelling / identifies which vowel to use.

I remember from barmaiding that the stench of gin would turn my stomach. Shudder. I can testify from extensive personal research that vodka is a proper drink.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin is the king of white spirits, both neat and in the old G+Ts. I'd drink G+T's all the time except the fifth always seems to leave a weird bitter aftertaste. Cabbage is correct about the bisongrass vodka. Other vodka is OK, but never with coke or lemonade. Neat or mixed with tonic or orange for me. Neat tequila is truly foul, but I wuv margaritas. White rum I'll drink if there's nothing else but I'm not a huge fan. Triple sec = ????.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Menorcan gin != london gin AT ALL. Be warned.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gin and fanta limon is indeed num num.

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And the Limon is closer to the trad lemonade you get from Tesco's than the Fanta Lemon stuff over here.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin Rules, especially Bombay Sapphire. Num Num Botanicals.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are all total white spirits rockists.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is you who is the rockist.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why?

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will stick up for triple sec; it is sweet and lovely, a wonderful apertif that is truly delightful over ice. Plus, you can't have a margarita without it.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are ALL white spirit GOTHists.

Alan T, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because you made the accusation first. This is known as casting the first stone. Stone = Rock. Emma = Rockist!!!

Pete, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More evidence that gin rots the brain.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The entire white spirits market is in dire need of modernisation. The distillation thing is a total racket. In the future everyone will just buy bottles of pure alcohol and dilute with water and the requisite flavouring à la Nesquik but without the slaughter of innocents.

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

being a vegan is GRATE. why? cos i don't take painkillers. and i have terrible TERRIBLE period pain today. THUS i must *sigh* go for the "herbal remedy" no not WEED i can't smoke in the office! i refer of course to JUNIPER ie. gin! a can of that from Sainsbury's, poured for secrecy into my "mr happy" mug and bingo! sipping away, period pain has abated, and i am even able to ignore stupid boss. ps. i know this means i am a terrible lush. i do not mind!

katie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Explain why veganism means not eating painkillers again, Katie?

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

um that is of course a can of gin AND TONIC. i can't drink it neat without much grimacing. and of course am not that much of an alcoholic!

katie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cos it is tested on animals nick and prob. has lactose/gelatine in it anyhoo. please don't start asking me the "but what if you got cancer and had to take DRUGS so you wouldn't DIE?" type questions. i am sick to the back teeth of arguing with people about it.

katie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could have an IV drip of Gin. That would be cool.Well, apart from the disease aspect of it.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No don't worry, I don't do that. I have to put up with it enough as a semi-vegetarian.

I dunno, things like aspirin and paracetemol just feel like they've been on the market for so long that worrying about any animal testing seems too distant to me. It would be like boycotting the Pyramids

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aawww N. yes RIckyT sa that he thinks aspirin is OK but i still feel icky about it. gin tastes much better! (actually the only reason that i'm vegan is so that gin counts as medicine. there, that's a much better argument innit!)

katie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, aspirin has been around for long enough for the animal testing thing to be like the pyramids but the damn boxes never tell you if the pills contain lactose or gelatin.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin is the sophisticates swig of choice, natch. Sour and tasty and num, nothing makes you seem more debonaire and rakish than getting filthy puking drunk on a successions of g&ts.

However, SALTY DOG, ie vodka and grpaefuirt juice, is the tasties way to drink vodka.

White rum infinitely inferior to its darker, mumsier, more comforting cousin.

I am going to order a triple sec this very evening. I will let you know.

misterjones, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmm, vodka grapefruit. Yummy.

Would Malibu count as a separate spirit even though it's just rum really? I used to be very partial to a Malibu and pineapple at college, mainly because it made male friends embarrassed to order it ha ha but also cos the coconutty pineappley smell made me think I was on holiday instead of in a dank dark student bar.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

with these two threads next to one another, I can't tell the difference between Gin and Ginola.

Alan T, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin can be enjoyed by a man or a woman, while Ginola is just for the ladies.

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate that Pyramids thread. It contains a joke of mine which did not realise the seriousness of the situation at the time. (What were you doing when the planes hit the World Trade Centre Pete? I was writing a fatuous comment on a thread about Pyramids).

Pete, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't sweat it Mr Ptee, it was difficult to believe at first go. when someone told me that two planes, etc, I think I said something fatuous along the lines of "Crashing one plane would be unfortunate, but two is just carelessness".

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete is the Jo Moore of ILE.

It's a great question that Pyramids one which never got the respect it deserved. If only it had been asked by Nitsuh instead of Nick then maybe people would have treated it with the seriousness it merited.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actualy there was some serious bits halfway down which shows how carefully I read it. I was just looking for Pete's offensive comment anyway.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Story of my fucking life.

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[that wasn't even true as a reponse to Tom's first post, let alone the second one]

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do I keep typing 'reponse'? It's getting as bad as 'arbitary'.

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do I bother with anything at all ever?

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am suddenly enveloped in loneliness

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was only joking! Start another thread about bras, that'll cheer you up.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah stop hijacking my bouze thread with your shoe gazing moaning.

Emma, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin is so so horrible. Ugh......I've never drank it, and the smell of it makes me feel like vomiting everywhere. It smells like bad sweaty auntie (TM) perfume or something......

Vodka is the centrepoint from which all other spirits can be reached. Vodka is very nice with many things. It also is easy to drink lots of at once. You can fit 4 measures of vodka and a can of redbull or some of that DISGUSTING lime stuff if you're broke, into a pint glass.

Vodka is also cheap and has many amusing cheap brand names such as Nostrova, Vatsky, Moskova, and Zara. The fact that these are all like paintstripper is kind of irrelevent. We'll drink anything us students!!!!! Bonkers!!!

Ronan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan - not true. You can have an even better margarita by switching out the triple sec for Gran Marnier.

http://www.la-barrica.com/imagen/fotoproducto/licores/gran_marnier.jpg

Rocky McRockist, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But you have a supremo margarita if you add triple sec AND Grand Marnier. And Cointreau. And a splash of brandy.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, this sounds like a hangback from your child hood. I bet you have lovely aunts. Do they still give you drunken slobbery kisses or are they more restrained now that you've grown up?

You smell lovely dahling what is it? Hmm, it's gin.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is no one talking about LONG ISLAND ICED TEAZZZ? It has LOTS of white spirits in, including that three second stuff. And it's fabulous, tastes fabulous and has you 3 sheets faster than you can get it down. mmmmmmmmm

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, give into the lure of gif and you too can have a belly like mine. Frosty gin straight from the paper bag is what you want. Num num.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The most expensive round I ever bought cost £60 for 5 drinks and involved Long Island Iced Teas. It was gorgeous.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The lure of GIN not GIF (or JIF or CIF). The latter(s) will retard yr gut cultivation by making you vomit.

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And that was 9 years ago so accounting for inflation it cost a million pounds!

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you partaken of thee evil Whoite Spitirt tonight?>

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to try some of Katie's brain medicine for lunch.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No the amber non-spirit. I forgot the lemon fanta so the gin stays capped.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is triple sec consumed by itself ever? I know it goes in a Cosmopolitan, which is a good drink, albeit girly pink.

Sean, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of you need to reconsider tequilas... try Hussong's neat, you can back it with a lightish beer if need be. It's in the black bottle that kind of looks like a little jug.

Ron Hudson, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know it goes in a Cosmopolitan, which is a good drink, albeit girly pink.

The goal is consumption and enjoyment, not appearance.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of pink, I used to always order Pink Gin, until it hit me one day what image of myself I was potentially projecting..

Pink Gin = classic, for being more alcoholic than straight Gin but being very very easy to drink..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No my aunties are all actually ok, although they may drink gin. It's my granny who slobbers on me, and asks what I'm going to when I leave school.

I haven't drank since about last thursday, I have been saving diligently for this weekend. Still I'd love to go out tonight, AND NOT DRINK GIN.

Ronan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

new best thing: pineapple and malibu = GRATE! i = drunkish on it now! 4 and no sign of nausea AT ALL [take THAT, beer! HAH!]!!!!!4 and it tastes like coconut! and not at all like rum! which is good, cause there was that Rum Incident in 6th form...

also Katie please explain to me more then juniper berries as painkiller stylez thing.

petra jane, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Triple sec (triple dry) = stronger, dryer form of Curacao (how do you do a cedilla in html, anyway?), a liqueur distilled from bitter oranges from island of same name in Dutch West Indies. Most well- known brand of triple sec = Cointreau.

Cue sexy French geezers smarming on TV in run-up to Christmas.

Boring about Booze, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ç is achieved by typing & ccedil; without the space. The only curaçao I know is the blue one. What makes it blue?

MarkH, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hiya Mark!
Blue food colouring. Other colours of curaçao are also available. Its just to make cocktails look more inviting & sexy.

David, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Petra Jane, all i know is that gin helps get rid of the period pain. i think they also used to prescribe it for postnatal mothers who were depressed and had terrible period problems, but they stopped when said mothers ended up adding alcoholism to their list of problems, hence MOTHERS' RUIN!!

as far as i know though gin doesn't help other types of pain. except that pain you get when your guts are SHRIEKING for a g&t!

katie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gin pref tanquery,, Bombay Saphire or Plymouth.

Vodka:- Wybrowka (Bison Grass), Kazakskaya (mystery central asian herbs), Russky standard, Stolychnaya, Moskovskaya, FInlandia, Russian Cmepnob (Smernov).

I'm not keen on Grey goose, Western Smirnof, or fruit flavoured vodkas.

Anyway enough of Clear colourless drinks. Let's talk about red drinks. (Campari, Gin, Aurum and Dry Martini in about a 2:2:1:1 ratio)

Ed, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As drunk in Lord Byron's favorite bar.

Ed, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
There is a good story about Clement Frued and Campari which I do not have the time to recount here.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That's so, like, Fermat.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Gin used to contain a mild toxin with special effects on Wimmins Parts, hence the old "drink a pint of gin and sit in a hot bath => spontaneous abortion" wives tale.

My mate Simon swears by Bombay Sapphire, as it is the only gin nice enough to drink neat. PH34R my mate Simon.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Gin used to contain a mild toxin with special effects on Wimmins Parts

according to my wife & her pals at college, Gin still has special fx on Wimmins Parts: non-prescription Viagra I mean

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew's mate Simon is MY KIND OF MATE.

Thanks to J0hn, I may be stocking up on gin in anticipation of this weekend...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(Although I must say the idea of spotlights, explosions and CGI characters shooting out of Wimmins Parts after a stiff martini produces many giggles.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Another good gin that won't dent your pocketbook quite so hard as Bombay Sapphire is Broker's, which comes in the cutest bottle: capped by a little plastic bowler hat! The downside is that as soon as you say "bowler hat," you start singing Hazel O'Conner songs & can't stop.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Bombay Sapphire roXor and thankyou John for reminding me that Mentality Towers is almost out of stock.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The only effect gin had on me was it made me sick.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No CGI or explosions? Drat.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew's mate Simon is my kind of mate

He is quite the drinking partner!
