Not as good as Del Boy mentioning the war3

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

Certainly not in the same ballpark as Sammy Davis Jr rollerskating under Alf Garnett. "I don't believe it!"

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

"Del Boy mentioning the war"?

nate woolls, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

As I just said elsewhere Ronnie Barker's notes for this sold for £485000.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

The notes to the auction are definitely lolz.

The script contains various minor amendments throughout and is complete with the original 'BILLHOOKS' ending that was subsequently rewritten by Ronnie Barker in later years.

Some pisspronunciation going on there.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

In a Two Ronnies sketch poll it would come way down my list, behind the likes of the Mastermind sketch http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xq8ZnQ95cKk

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Not a par on CJ seeing the Queen on Christmas Day and fusing her with some Waldorf salad shit.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

daniel otm

blueski, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

"To say this is the television equivalent of say, Lennon’s lyrics to 'Imagine' would not, in our opinion be an unreasonable comparison."

oh fuck off.

pisces, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that's what I said, very unfair to Mr Barker that.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

The tension builds...

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

Hurts me to say no, because I love the Ronnies, but the sketch is actually a fantastic opener followed by quite a lot of dross. I have barker's complete works and am almost tempted to transcribe the whole thing here, if only for posterity. But it's late and I'm tired and it's probably youtubable anywya.

Daniel definitely OTM re Mastermind sketch. Also: FUNEX.

Did anyone ever find those closing extended musical numbers on The Two Ronnies funny?

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

David Renwick wrote the Mastermind sketch, didn't he?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Either David Renwick or David Nobbs - I always get the two mixed up.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

Did anyone ever find those closing extended musical numbers on The Two Ronnies funny?

Me!

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

Shit closing extended musical numbers are an integral part of British comedy, it's just whether The Real McCoy or Smack The Pony had the least funny ones.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

Lenny Henry in drag as Tina Turner singing "what's love but a can of white emulsion" = golden memory of my youth.

ledge, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

How many vicars were there in Pitts anyway?

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

yeah ronnies songs = funny. sometimes hillarious. top of the pops pisstakes = less so and sometimes (although no-one ever seems to remembers this or if so doesn't say as much) flat out racist.

pisces, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

the sketch is actually a fantastic opener followed by quite a lot of dross

Yes.

chap, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

I quite liked Big Jim Jehosophat and Fatbelly Jones, actually.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

Ronnie B wrote all the musical skits, didn't he?

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, including the pisstake one he wrote for Not The Nine O'Clock News.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

TS: Lenny Henry as Tina Turner vs Eddie Large as Tina Turner

blueski, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

Both preferable to Tina Turner as Tina Turner

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't Eddie Large live in Portishead?

Little and Large doing Portishead would have been something else.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

Eddie Large lives in Clapton in Gordano, not far from Portishead but probably closer to Pill.

I am now racking my brain to think who Little and Large did on Harry Hill's TV Show.

aldo, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

Four Candles isn't all that but I'm fucked if I'm voting for Del Boy.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

It's very funny if you don't watch it too often.

That dub version is great!

Pashmina, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

still, mastermind. or any of the dinner parties.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

Man with guitar: "Nobody Loves me, it's true.."
Other man wearing Dog ears: "OK MUSKIE!!"
Man with guitar: "Not like you do.."
Other man now not wearing dog ears: "Friends, if you love him, mail your vote on the back of a postcard and I mean that most sincerely..."

Is Englebert Humperdinck whose real name?

Tom Jones

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

Poster officially falls off office chair in hysterics at Mark's L&L do Portishead routine.

All ILxors under 45 spend rest of week scratching heads in bafflement...

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

The optician sketch where Ronnie B puts a teaspoon in the lens holder is another classic

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 February 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

-- Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 13:21

pretty sure that's a myth, no?

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

one Barker moment that always jars: the reference to Blancmange (the band) at some point in Open All Hours.

I know the series was still going when they were around, but it's still a harsh reminder of something you might otherwise easily forget: it was then, but it certainly wasn't there. the extra piquancy comes from the fact that they came from a very similar town to that where OAH is supposed to happen, in its own timeless region.

February Callendar, Friday, 15 February 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

anymore context re that Blancmange reference? only the singer was from Lancs tho.
