― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)
Do you think there is a trend toward capitalizing prepositions in titles, or is the lowercase rule going to last?
― Eazy, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)
a woman just called seeking legal counsel b/c she's a lesbian and her boss told her "get out of here -- go home and wash your dick.

Do you think there is a trend toward capitalizing prepositions in titles
Not if I can help it.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)
The other pair I like is here in various colors.
― KitCat, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
The reviews on that pair I just posted the link to aren't the best.
― KitCat, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
There seems to be a trend towards not capitalizing titles except first word and proper nouns, right? (Sun Times?)
― Jesse, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
8.167 3) Lowercase prepositions, regardless of length, except when they are stressed, are used adjectivally or adverbially, are used as conjunctions, or are part of a Latin expression used adjectivally or adverbially.
― dan m, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
Sarah, what happened to the navy ones from the last thread?? I sort of liked their utility.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)
Or were those teh bad review pair?
xxp Regardless of length? You would say "The Streets Lie underneath Us"?
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)
except when they are stressed
The example given is "A River Runs Through It".
― dan m, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
What does it mean to be stressed?
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
Our rule is just to lowercase all prepositions that are four letters or fewer.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)
This seems like a British/European thing.

xp
― Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)
"A River Runs Through It"
That's not just stressed, it's also used adverbially. Same with "The Streets Lie underneath Us"
― mattttt, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)
One thing that I didn't realize after looking up the section on title capitalization in the ol' orange Chicago book is that the last word of titles is always supposed to be capped.
― dan m, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)
OH MAN I am really into these, actually. What a nice color.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)
Those look ready for whatever you throw at them.
― kenan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
xp Really, Dan? Have you ever seen a title where it wasn't? (Not trying to be snarky.)
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
"Let's Give Them Something to Talk About"
― Eazy, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
I guess I just never noticed. Nearly all the titles I deal with end in proper nouns or long-ass abbreviations like "NGC234998y76892u34099(beta symbol).
― dan m, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)
Wait, someone give me an example of a preposition not used adjectivally or adverbially. I can't think of any.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)
Oh wait, what about "The Streets Are underneath Us"?
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
Or no, because "are" is still a verb.
I'm also kind of into the Arctic GI Joe character look:

I ordered the plum ones upthread. They have thinsulate and got good reviews. I had to get a size up from what I'd normally order, so I'm hoping my thick socks will do the trick. If not, free returns, here I come!

This guy in the office next door just came over and asked me if anyone had talked to me about the mail yet. Um, no? What about? He said I was going to be opening ALL OF THEIR MAIL for now on. Keep in mind I don't work for them. I was like, HA HA AHHA HA HA YOu are joking. He said, No. It will be fun! He better be joking. There's no way. NO WAY. They get so much mail in one day that I can barely carry it all with both arms.

― KitCat, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)
xp Ask him how much you're getting compensated for this additional duty.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)
Why would you open their mail? To save them time on opening it themselves? To summarize the contents for them?
― Jordan, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)
To save them from doing it I guess? I don't know. I'm just ignoring him and assuming it's a joke. If he asks me to do it again, I'll go talk to my boss, since he's the one that pays me, not them. And then if he says I'll need to do it, I'll remind him about my raise I'm supposed to be getting and how it should be higher than planned.
Then I'll invest in some high quality anti-papercut gloves.

― KitCat, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)
The mail is here. My solution for today will be to wait until that guy is distracted or leaves the office and then sneak the mail to where I normally put it, unopened naturally.
― KitCat, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

i really dislike pugs,
you're on the list.
― chicago kevin, Monday, 10 March 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)
they were just so trendy a few years ago that they really seemed more like an accessory than a pet. i think before EVERY couple in boystown had a pug i probably thought they were ok.
i'm not sure about the snorting thing, though. reminds me of guinea pigs, which i've never trusted since one bit me.
― colette, Monday, 10 March 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
I like pugs, but it's true what you say about homo-pug relations -- Andersonville is knee deep in pugs.

i'm calling PETA.

towga lived around the corner from john reis, one morning when i was taking our dog for a walk he took a leak on the swami van.
I thought you meant that John Reis took a leak on the van, which made me re-examine my opinion of your opinion of puck rock.
It's a PUGGLE. When I was a lass, we had a dog who was, no lie, part pug, part dachshund. I named her Suzanna after a little girl in my day care on whom I had a total crush. She was an awesome little dog who put up with me dressing her up in doll clothes. Alas she met her end on the dual highway that ran in front of my father's house (as did way more of my pets than you would think a decent parent would allow NOT THAT I AM BITTER OR ANYTHING DAD YOU ASSHOLE).
I have pictures of here somewhere that I will one day scan in to dazzle you all with how cute a pug/dachshund can be.

PUCK ROCK
Animals killed on Rt. 113 in Delaware in front of my father's house, that I am aware of:
1. Ginger Andrea Clorox Burg3ss (c) 2. Suzanna (d) 3. Pickles (c) 4. Van Halen (c) 5. Michelle (d) 6. Michelle Rose (d)

WOW that is sad. Sorry guys. Let's talk about indie rock again.
So far there is nothing on the PF lineup that has me all that thrilled, but as I am still angry about missing last year, we're going to guy tickets (prob three day passes) and if it totally blows, I will sell mine to some sucker the weekend before the show for a substantial markup.

if that was the full line-up for pfork fest, i'd probably just go saturday. i love public enemy and "it takes a nation of millions..." but the idea of seeing it live in 2008 doesn't really get me excited. and i like a couple of the acts on sunday but still seems kinda snoresville so far. obviously they're going to add shit though.

Jenny: sorry about your pets. Kevin: sorry about your door. Kenan: sorry about your cat.
Sounds Like A Sandwich is a great album title. Speaking of salsa, a friend gave me this Willie Colon cd from the 60s that is fire. It's one of those two trombone salsa bands and it is dirty as hell.
