Which John Hughes-penned character will grow up to be the largest discredit to the species?

Most of these kids seem to be headed straight into much darker, more Bret Easton Ellis territory, maybe even as soon as the credits roll. Who will be the most shallow, venal, smarmy, irritating or flat-out psychotic?

Duckie FTW, I think.

kenan, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

Steff, obviously.

I don't know, man. Something tells me that Kevin McCallister kid coul;d have used a little more adult supervision. He's so violent!

I'm going to say Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) (Pretty In Pink), because she forsakes her true identity and leaves Duckie floundering in order to go date the hateful rich proto-yuppie that is Blane McDonnagh (Andrew McCarthy) (Pretty In Pink)

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

90% sure Andrew 'Andy' Clark is going to eventually rape someone.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Duckie will be fine as long as he comes out of the closet.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) - angry, daddy issues, will go away to college and come back and be an evil slumlord/"real estate developer"

milo z, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

Steff, obviously.

otm. pretty soon he'll be schmoozing girls into masturbating on camera and having sex in car crashes.

Curly Sue would tear Steff apart with her bare hands.

HI DERE, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

Some great justifications in this thread but I just can't look past Curly Sue.

angry, daddy issues, will go away to college and come back and be an evil slumlord/"real estate developer"

Or GOP candidate.

Nicole, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

Here's my thinking on Staff -- he's already too evil to be much moreso in a few years. No, I think he'll spend his mid twenties alienating everyone who knows him and developing a sovereign cocaine habit, and end up not being a real threat, but a cliche, and eventually a sad lesson.

I think there are people on that list who could potentially be a lot scarier than that. Cameron is a good answer. I never quite bought it when Ferris says near the end of the movie that Cameron is going to be ok for the first time in his life, or some such. Well, he expressed something, ok, good. That's great in the therapists office. But can you imagine the scene later when his dad comes home and spends long silent minutes wondering whether or not he should actually physically kill him, and how to get away with it? That's not going to be ok. Not at all.

kenan, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

uh... Staff = Steff.

kenan, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

The eldest daughter from Uncle Buck should've been on this list, she'd totally end up being flat-out psychotic.

But Cameron is a good answer.

nate woolls, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

Duckie will be fine as long as he comes out of the closet.
-- Dr Morbius, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:39 (Yesterday)

I seem to remember this actually was the case in the unproduced (but still in development hell) 32 Candles script, which was NOT written by Hughes and was, at last check, a potential USA Network made-for-tv movie.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

That said, Long Duk Dong remains horrifying.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:43 (seventeen years ago)

How could Duckie be in a sequel to 16 Candles?

nate woolls, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

Ferris discovers coke at 23. Loses his friends, works second-shift job at the CBOT.

Eazy, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

Jeanie Bueller was definitely in for some trouble, getting mixed up with bad boys like Sheen.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

there was sposed to be a Pretty in Pink sequel, too?

Dr Morbius, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

Sloane Peterson is a blank beard

sexyDancer, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

it was rumored for a while, but it was debunked as either a hoax, or some stupid fanfic script that someone unaffiliated with Hughes who had no rights to the name/characters had pitched somewhere.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

I believe Ferris and Steff met in an Ivy League University and formed a human trafficking ring with strong ties to heads of state in every continent.

Bobbi Peru, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

Cameron Frye grew up to be the sleazy, awesome jerk Alan Ruck played in "Spin City." God I love Alan Ruck.

Abbott, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, Alan Ruck is one of those dudes I always wished had done more than his 1 or 2 big roles, I wonder if there's anything worth renting kicking around his imdb resume.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

definitely Ferris or Cameron

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

I still love Ferris Bueller, et al.

Eric H., Friday, 8 February 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

"32 Candles" featured cameos from a handful of other Hughes-universe characters, in cringey wink-wink smaller roles. Aren't most of those Hughes movies set in the same fictional Illinois town?

This was no hoax, it was in active development for ages at Universal and ended up at the USA Network (where it was still getting kicked around at meetings as of 2 or 3 years ago).

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

(also - if I remember correctly, in the script, Anthony Michael Hall's character invented Google)

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

Jeanie Bueller was definitely in for some trouble, getting mixed up with bad boys like Sheen.

OTM. I'm thinking meth addict who moved to New Orleans or San Francisco in the late 80s to "see something new" instead of going to college. After 6 months of dead-end work at a Shakers or a Denny's, she had to sell her Fiero to make rent. She gets strung out on meth because she can't afford coke, and ends up moving in with her night shift manager Duane because "it makes things easier." She doesn't take her family's calls, and ultimately calls her mother a "stuck up, controlling bitch with a dykey haircut" when she refuses to send Jeannie any more money.

Meanwhile, Sloan and Ferris are at Northwestern and U of Chicago or Notre Dame and Washington U. in St. Louis, being a faithful, long distance couple.

Cameron, after working for two years to pay off the damage to the Ferrari, runs off to India and ends up living on an ashram.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 8 February 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

uh Savannah, my post was in response to Morbius's question about a nonexistant sequel to Pretty In Pink, not 16 Candles.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

If I were you, I'd spend less time worrying about John Hughes characters, and more time worrying about yourself.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

When Curly Sue skullfucks all of these posers with a drilldo, you all will be sorry.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't that the movie's original tagline?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

Hughes-universe

This is indeed a disturbing universe. :(

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

xpost to Morbs haha Oh shit you're right! It's not even that I forgot that, it's like he's so ubiquitous that it never dawned on me that this is the same guy who got stone cold busted with a 14-year old boy. So what's his story lately? Counseling or some such?

kenan, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Come on, Steff is like the least evil person in the movie! He'll end up as a civil servant and good father. Duckie and Jeannie are normal kids who'll deal with their issues. Ferris obv = selfish, manipulative evil as mizzell points out.

Sundar, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

Duckie is already the worst human being imaginable.

way to overstate, but yeah, there is something singularly unpleasant about him, isn't there? I guess a lot of it has to do with John Cryer, who can't help seeming unctuous no matter what he's doing, but there's something... not... quite... right about Duckie in particular. I don't think borderline personality disorder would be far off.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb119/murieldavenport/duckie.jpg

kenan, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

I think Duckie's biggest problem is that he's a complete and utter shitbag pussy.

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

Or maybe Morbs is right, and his attention-seeking behavior is really a desperate effort to reach out, hoping that someone somewhere will understand him better than he understands himself, and turn him into a hand puppet.

kenan, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

Laurel, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

Even Ducky's best friend in the movie hated Ducky!

roxymuzak, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

"we've been friends forever and i've talk to you 20 times a day every day for 10 years and i hope that never changes!"

Look, I can decode girltalk with the best of them. This means:

"I know that if I outright reject you, I'm going to spend the next seven months clearing dog heads out of my lawn, so I'm going to mouth some platitudes towards you that hopefully will keep you from trying to touch my breasts."

(My Duckyhate may be filtering my recollections somewhat.)

HI DERE, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

It's like John Cusack showed up and cockblocked Jon Cryer's career.

I like Ducky, but I'd like to see him go crazyape bonkers with his drill and sex.

But my vote'll go for basically any of Molly Ringwald's characters - she's always irritated the fuck out of me and Im not sure why.

Trayce, Saturday, 9 February 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

It's a shame we took Elias Koteas's skinhead teddybear character from Some Kind of Wonderful out of consideration, although I'm sure he probably went on to do great things as an adult. Those kids always do.
