Using your mental illness as a doctor's note

When I have missed deadlines or class I have been able to get a doctor's note and the teacher's have been able to accommodate me with an extended due date -- etc.

But my doctor's note says something like - "he is on a new medicine and is experiencing symptoms that have make it harder for him to be prepared... he has a mental illness..." .

I mean, what's your opinion on using a mental illness as a doctor's note?

What is your issue with this? Are you embarrassed? Worried that your teacher's might discriminate against you?

It is an illness. Although I have to say I'm not sure if it's right for your doctor to put that in your note. I would think disclosure laws would prevent them from sharing any diagnosis with non-approved people.

what is your mental illness? ar eyou really mentally ill and is that the reason for you missing deadlines, or are you just a lazy slacker?

If you're in the US, it is not cool for your MD to disclose the nature of your illness without your consent. He should be able to word that note in a more ambiguous fashion by leaving out the "he has a mental illness" part.

I used to work in an abortion clinic, and our excuses didn't say, "Mary was seen in our office for an abortion today."

I once worked at a place where the manager you had to ring if you were ill would take details and write them in the big office diary.

"Susan - off sick (bad diarrhoea)"

"Ian - off sick (is hearing voices)"

Shut up.

Seriously, after I posted the first time it struck me even harder that your doctor is WRONG. Illnesses should not be disclosed to your employer unless you choose so. It doesn't matter what kind of illness it is.

I would definitely bring this up with your doctor.

Well, she hasn't wrote the note yet. I guess she could write it in an ambiguous fashion. I just feel weird that I have to use a mental illness as an excuse even if she doesn't mention it in the letter. Not that my illness isn't serious enough for missing the test day, but rather I feel ashamed, not embarrassed, that I have to use it as an excuse. I already told my teacher, when I explained why I missed class, that I had started taking a new medicine which had some symptoms _______, _______, _______. I shouldn't have told my teacher this. I should have just not gone to class and gave her a generic sick note. Either way, I feel ashamed when my illness keeps me from functioning at the same level as everyone else. Should I be ashamed? is my question.

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

No. you're ill. it's not your fault.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

aww :(

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose, my parents are also to blame for me being ashamed. They get on my case like its no thing when I get a bad grade...

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

yeah if I were you I'd just come up with another excuse bevause it could potentially be embarassing.. like the teacher may walk on eggshells around you or something or be extra-nice which would probably make you feel worse

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and a friend of mine likes to make lazy jokes about me non-stop.

I already have a note-taker for that class so it won't be embarrassing (I don't have to go to class). However, I guess I am still ashamed whenever my illness goes public.

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

you all don't count

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

It's okay in college but I've gotten fired for doing it in the 'real world.' Try to get into a field of career where they are educated about mental illness & it won't be a stigma. That's one of 8,342 reasons I am getting into science.

You should be able to get a note that says your medications SIDE EFFECTS prevent you from doing x, y or z. It's just as effective and "side effects" is like any non-placebo in the world, potentially. It is okay to feel embarrassed for having a mental illness, although there is certainly nothing wrong with having one. It's none of anyone's business and you don't have to explain yourself to anyone.

in my workplace people usually either claim symptoms of profuse emesis or say they have the rickets

El Tomboto, Friday, 8 February 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

but really whenever anybody calls in sick or late it is assumed to be due to a discombobulating hangover because that makes for better jokes

"I got a touch of the kopfschmerz today."

Abbott, Friday, 8 February 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)

Where I come from, docs canonly write "was absent due to a medical condition preventing work" or similar. *NO* specifics. I mean wtf, your medical condition is private.

Trayce, Friday, 8 February 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

That's not the issue. The issue was me being ashamed as if I cant use mental illness as an excuse.

On a side note, I have no idea how I got home last night. LOL

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

if it's an excuse, you should be ashamed.

if it's a reason, then you shouldn't.

do you feel you're using it as an excuse?

nice trolling.

darraghmac, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

no, you dumb dick

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

then why ask the question? nobody else can tell you.

darraghmac, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

If you have a mental illness maybe you can tell me whether you should get "privileges" or not.

I mean, why should I be privileged? I try to be just like everyone else.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)

shouldn't the weak just die?

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed - everyone just chill and enjoy the weakend!

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

your local medical practitioner can test you for it.

darraghmac, Friday, 8 February 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

StanM, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

CaptainLorax, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

No one can tell you to be ashamed! a=a and all that shit.

Abbott, Friday, 8 February 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

I have anxiety disorder and my own psychiatrist said that I don't have to have "mental illness" on a doctor's note. He wrote a great note that didn't use terms like "mental illness" but that I had a physical condition (chronic insomnia was triggering this) and that my temporary medical leave would help me do my job better.
