I just finished watching the first week.

gabriel byrnes is great in this but you don't really see it until the friday session.

carne asada, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

I'm loving this show. It panders to my taste for dialogue-heavy extended scenes. It's pretty audacious having a show where each episode is a 25-minute scene basically performed in real time.

HBO is streaming all of the episodes on its website. Best to start with week one and move forward.

The series's creator is the son of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I'd love to see the original Israeli version.

Eazy, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

the schedule is sort of daunting if it weren’t for On Demand i would never be able to keep up.

the show really got interesting for me when it focused on Paul and started giving that character some real depth

carne asada, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

I think the series is truly designed for On Demand and DVD -- they can't expect someone to stay home five nights a week to watch a show.
I've watched each week's episodes over the course of a day or so.

Eazy, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

the reviews have been so terrible I've been afraid to watch it...so it is alright?

akm, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

starting to dig this show. leagues better than that john from cincy garbage anyway

am0n, Monday, 25 February 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

I watched 10 mins; it seemed overwrought, not in a good way, more of a "The Practice" kind of way. Lots of shots of antagonists locking glares on each other.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 25 February 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

it was a terrible idea for them to roll out a show like this less than 6 months after Tell Me You Love Me -- could've seemed more novel, now it's like "oh, this is kinda like that other show, but without the sex scenes?"

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't know his wife was played by the coroner from homicide. she looks good in this. also "executive producer: mark wahlberg"?? the one character i find consistently annoying is sophie.

am0n, Sunday, 9 March 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

I find that I enjoy this way more if I just skip thursdays. I actually really like the Sophie eps.

Simon H., Sunday, 9 March 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

"The series's creator is the son of Gabriel Garcia Marquez."

not true.
the series creators were Israeli's.
the Israeli version is/was better (its now in the middle of the 2nd season):
more "arty",minimalist and without compromising

Zeno, Sunday, 9 March 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

the schedule is sort of daunting if it weren’t for On Demand i would never be able to keep up.

weird, I couldn't find it on my OnDemand menu with all the other HBO shows, so I was like "fuck it, I'll never catch up, maybe I'll just watch an occasional episode here and there.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 9 March 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

endquote"

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 9 March 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

on mine its actually on the main hbo menu by itself, not lumped in with the other series. same with john adams.

mayor royce from the wire = alex's dad

am0n, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

a second season is about to be shot soon.

Zeno, Saturday, 21 June 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

nine months pass...

a second season is about to air soon and im pretty excited. i was slow to warm up to the og season but i found skipping all melissa george's sessions helped. that and getting to watch 2-3 episodes in row esp sophie and the angry couple ones that helped me really get into the rhythm of the show

so... pretty excited for a new group of patients but:

a) i dont want to just get replacements for the old patients i mean wtf hope davis is even the monday slot and the kid is still on wed???

b) fraiser dad looks pretty intense hoping for some serious emotional aggression layered behind tense corporate alpha malignancy

c) sessions w/gina need to keep the antagonistic ott mutual loathing instead of them bonding abt their retard patients

d) wtf accents are a must

Lamp, Thursday, 26 March 2009 03:50 (sixteen years ago)

i just got the box of s1... how am i supposed to find the time to watch all this stuff!!!

s1ocki, Thursday, 26 March 2009 03:51 (sixteen years ago)

protip: skip monday sessions they are boring and melissa george is painful to watch

Lamp, Thursday, 26 March 2009 03:52 (sixteen years ago)

but i like her

s1ocki, Thursday, 26 March 2009 04:08 (sixteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

I think it helps with every HBO show to rent them rather than watch them when they air--at least judging by my wildly different reactions I have to John from Cincinatti, Generation Kill, and this from the critical reaction (which admittedly I get mostly second-hand on ILE).

In Treatment is awesome, I wouldn't skip an episode of Season 1. They all tie together and all pay off, even if it takes some time. I never really noticed how great Gabriel Byrne is, but now I think that's the fault of directors and writers, not him. His emotions are plain in every shot, even when apparently hidden from his patients. I'd love to check out the Israeli original, but this might be an Office-type situation where the cultural transposition actually does help the material: Blair Underwood's character is amazing, one of my favorites on DVD this year.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 23 April 2009 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

anyone who watches this is gaytarded (i have only seen the ads never the actual show)

What funky dudes; I'm voting for them. (cankles), Thursday, 23 April 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

i hope u get date raped this show is awesome

Lamp, Thursday, 23 April 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

have never seen this show but it's getting some hype in the uk now

just sayin, Thursday, 23 April 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

just catching up on this season. Blonde lawyer is annoying as hell. Walter is great though.

carne asada, Thursday, 23 April 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

mia sucks + its too much of a retread she basically only exists as a conduit into pauls lyfe and turmoil her "issues" are pathetic

i just watched the first two weeks last nite really feeling the tues/wed sessions they help remind u what, besides an accent, paul has to offer his patients

Lamp, Thursday, 23 April 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

I do love the way he says the title phrase.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 23 April 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

I just read the pans in Slate and the New Yorker, and I guess there are other things separating me from them than having seen the whole season on DVD rather than a few weeks, but it seems odd to me to review HBO shows based on four episodes, or even five, when the pattern with so many of them is to open up onscreen and in your mind over a longer period of time.

Other than that, I get the vibe that for many critics (and not just in this case) therapy and psychology in general is held up to a higher standard of realism than other professions, as if bigger stories and outlandish situations couldn't also say something true. Both of these critics in particular employ the Pauline Kael "we" or "you," but seem to have first-hand experience with therapy, where for me In Treatment is like my fantasy or nightmare of what it would be like without having spent more than one half-hour in a pyshiatrist's office, 20 disillusioning minutes into which he was ready to prescribe generous amounts of anti-depressent medication, where I was hoping for something closer to this--a person to help reveal myself to me, etc.

six months pass...

renewed!

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Friday, 23 October 2009 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Just getting right into this now, still halfway through season 1. Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest are brilliant, but Melissa George needs launched into the heart of the sun pronto.

ailsa, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

thought the soon-to-be alice in wonderland girl was pretty good (i generally expect american young-actors to sink anything serious tho)

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

This show is amazing.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

Season 3 starts tonight.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Monday, 25 October 2010 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

man, paris barclay sure gets around.

j., Tuesday, 26 October 2010 08:12 (fourteen years ago)

oh wow i hate this kid.

j., Wednesday, 27 October 2010 05:41 (fourteen years ago)

otm! they'll have to go some way to making him likeable even in the slightest. Sunil is great.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

i think like most any of the patients he becomes likeable when he lets up and becomes vulnerable / stops bullshitting, but the intensity of his bullshitting and especially its omg-contemporary-whatever tone make it hard to take.

and yeah, sunil is great. so far the debra winger character's deal seems a little too familiar.

j., Wednesday, 27 October 2010 06:05 (fourteen years ago)

The joy comes from watching good actors play off/against each other, so I'm fine with Winger (trusting that it develops). I liked how Paul's asshole tendencies came out in his Amy Ryan session, but he was mindful of them soon after. I loved a lot of the stuff with Gina before, but sometimes his angry unloading was a bit much.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 06:18 (fourteen years ago)

er… who?

i'm kind of surprised that paul's attempts at deflecting his patients' attempts to get personal still seem interesting, given how routine they are. you would think psychiatrists would get so sick of that they'd put a big sign on the door, 'STOP FUCKING TALKING ABOUT MY LIFE, I'M NOT GOING TO BITE'.

j., Wednesday, 27 October 2010 08:45 (fourteen years ago)

Gina was Diane Weist.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 09:18 (fourteen years ago)

i meant, amy ryan. i haven't seen that one yet. i had no idea she'd been added to the cast. now all the surprise will be gone.

j., Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

soz bruv!

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

this got a 0.0 in the demo.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Friday, 29 October 2010 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

Catching up. The only one I'm not terribly interested in is Debra Winger.

Gukbe, Thursday, 11 November 2010 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

how many actual people is a 0.0?

after this week it kind of seems as if the interest in debra winger's character might come from her forcing a conflict over paul's treatment of her sister. and things like paul's wooly-headed post-nap mishaps. the past treatment thing is at least novel.

sunil is still awesome. i haven't seen the other two sessions yet.

j., Thursday, 11 November 2010 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

Liking Jesse a lot, and I'm liking the different dynamic he has with Adele than he had with Gina.

Saw this week's Debra Winger and you're right. I'm more interested in it now.

Gukbe, Thursday, 11 November 2010 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

This season is pretty good! More consistently great than before. Sucks about the ratings.

Simon H., Thursday, 11 November 2010 06:59 (fourteen years ago)

lol AnCo

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 November 2010 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

haha i laughed at that too

dont really like this seasons patients but the amy ryan sessions are p great. rating are kinda w/e its the hardest show to get into & never pays off until youve mostly finished watching it. dont think the show can sustain itself atp anyway.

.gif of the magi (Lamp), Thursday, 18 November 2010 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

I think the Sunil and Jesse eps this week were great. Not seen the Adele one yet.

Gukbe, Thursday, 18 November 2010 02:30 (fourteen years ago)

oh, man, the adele one is great.

i'm cool with the kid and debra winger by now (although debra winger's issues could be more interesting, but hey).

j., Wednesday, 24 November 2010 09:56 (fourteen years ago)

just caught up. it's getting pretty good

http://www.ilxor.com/glyloop.mp3 (Aerosol), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

House/cat-sitting this weekend for some friends with HBO on demand. This is so my kind of thing: two characters, two chairs, one 25-minute scene.

would like a calmer set (Eazy), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

three months pass...

cancelled.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

not knowing what happens to paul is almost going to be like not knowing what happened to alf at the end of 'alf'.

j., Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

feel like they ran out of ideas @ the end of season 3 tbh

paul happened to paul, it always was

Lamp, Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:46 (fourteen years ago)

season 2 of this show shld still go down as one of those moments of quiet brilliance that animated tvs golden age tho

Lamp, Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe we're already at that time of championing the little-seen of the now long-past golden age

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

the golden age is over were just basking in its afterglowwwwwwwww
