i dont know if theres been a thread about edinburgh before, but im moving there for three months in two weeks and ive never been there. so enquiring minds wanna know: classic or dud? search and destroy??

amy, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My experience there was very limited, but I'd venture classic. Encountered a great pub, the National Museum and some absolutely beautiful views and architecture within the space of twenty-four hours, a good sign. I suspect you'd want to live in the right place, though, as I heard stories of some Not Nice Locations.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You are moving at the wrong time, Amy, cos August sees Edinburgh invaded by an army of Oxbridge thesps, tv producers, street "entertainers" and tourists.

However, if you can ride it out, Edinburgh is great - the prettiest city in Britain, I would say. Loads of good restaurants, pubs with reasonable opening hours, great record shops etc etc. I dunno about clubs etc - there is a pretty good regular artskooldisko - but then Glasgow is only 50 minutes away for that kind of thing. Have fun!

stevie t, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked Glasgow better.

How many of them gothic punk kids who do school shootings?

Sterling Clover, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic, I’d have to say. Forget all this Glasgow vs. Edinburgh nonsense. My wife’s from Glasgow but my Sister lives in Edinburgh and really there ain’t much to choose between them though the rivalry is very real.

Having said that after a number of years with Glasgow in the ascendant Edinburgh appears to be on the rise and certainly is looking more prosperous, prob a result of the Scottish Parliament. Typical city in having some dodgy areas (Niddrie, Granton, Muirhouse) but other prosperous areas (Morningside, Cramond), Leith (down towards docks) was considered rough but is becoming increasingly gentrified as Parliamentarians and ancillary staff moves into area.

Architecturally prob one of the finest cities in UK although it lacks the genius of a Rennie Mackintosh or Thomson which Glasgow has. Not too sure pop culture wise though plenty of great pubs/restaurants, Glasgow having edge over past 15-20 years but ‘high’ culture exceptionally well served. Anyway it is a beautiful city and as Stevie T said Glasgow’s only 50 mins away.

Plug, go to AJ’s café in the Royal Mile esp. for the cakes. It is my sister’s partners though; mention my name and you may get a discount (or prob not.)

Well I don't know much about Edinburgh (Thompson's your man) but me and Tom will be up there this weekend spreading our bad vibes round the town. So ILE drinking in the town if you are in the district.

Pete, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Canny Man on Morningside Road is a pub with a BOOK OF RULES! There's a chair reserved for the cat and the first Bloody Mary of the day is on the house and there's a special room with a special knock for long-term regulars and there's no need to eat before you go because they give you great big bowls of sausage rolls and other such wholesome snacks. Glasgow's got better shops though.

Madchen, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Edinburgh is indeed CLASSIC, and I have lived here for seven out of the last eight years, as if to prove it. August is always exceptionally busy, and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Festival, but it does mean drinking until five a.m. in some places; September is a classic Edinburgh month, really quiet, with lovely long evenings and awesome haze / sunset effects if you're walking across the Meadows. October is naturally bad since the students all return. But to be honest, like most places, the character of the city is entirely dependent on whereabouts you are; living in Abbeyhill is one thing, living in Marchmont quite another.

Glasgow is also ace. But then I even like Dundee, Aberdeen being the only Scottish city I'm not keen on.

alex thomson, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aberdeen was very wet and foggy the one day I visited, but I liked its low-key appeal from what I saw of it. Pretty remote, though.

Let's see, based on past encounters: Glasgow -- quite grand, spent three days there in 1992, had a wonderful wander around the city, will be seeing it again briefly this Sunday. Dundee -- only drove through it but I really liked the geography and look of the place, and of course Billy Mackenzie of the Associates was born and raised there, so clearly it is a place of Divine and Holy Goodness. St. Andrews -- where Jane the Glorious went to uni, and a nice spot it is, golf course and everything. Inverness -- didn't really spend much time there, but it and Nairn, where Jane's parents live, do both benefit from the setting.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The one time I went to Aberdeen I had the second biggest hangover of my entire life, it was colder than anywhere else I'd ever been and the town looked like it was made out of breezeblocks. Not surprisingly, I didn't like it that much.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dundee is great. Lived there between 88 and 94, used to see Billy McKenzie occasionally but unfortunately didn't have balls to go and say hello to him, far too cool and mysterious. many happy memories drinking in the pubs along the Perth Road. Not keen on Aberdeen either, suspect the oil money has went to it's head. Paul Theroux in the Kingdom by the Sea gives Aberdeen a good slagging, he doesn't have too much good to say about Dundee either though.

Billy Dods, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

skratch? \ a bit of hiphop of a week. cant rememeber where it is. la belle angele? its a sort of scotish version of the london one.

quite a lot of good stuff coming to edinburgh nowadays.

and glasgow is not far away...

ambrose, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
i am going to be in edinburgh for a couple days in february (the beginning i think, not sure of dates yet). anyone fancy a beer? and is there any good stuff on at the weekends i might like?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll have a beer with you and a fight too if you want? Maybe you'll let me take you to a GAY BAR seeing as you think I'm a homophobe.

Well?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i'm not too keen on the fighting bit, not my scene to be honest, but suggestions of good bars or pubs to go to are certainly welcome.

so, who else is in edinburgh these days besides calum and leigh?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

there is some whisky museum where you get to ride through scottish history in a whisky barrel, surely that is a must?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez, I didn't know about that. I may have to travel through to Edinburgh for that too. IT LOOKS GREAT!

It has the smells of Scotland, apparently. What's not to love?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburgh is the best place ever. No foolin. I've stayed here since 1994 and I grew up nearby. I tried staying in Brighton for a bit but it was crap in comparison, even with the nicer weather. What kind of stuff are you looking for? Clubs? Bars? Sights? Sounds? Smells? What dates?

[Word of warning it will be incredibly cold in Feb. Bring 2 jackets.]

[and 2 hats <<:]

neil simpson (neil simpson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

edinburgh certainly has the smell of SOMETHING. I cannot pin it down, but there's a certain edinburgh smell. Someone said it's a bit like gravy.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth: meet C-man and report back (if you make it back, that is).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the best thing about edinburgh is that it is only a 45 minture train journey from glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken - it's the malt from the breweries - kind of a baked potato smell? the same smell you get round Moorfoot in Sheffield from the Wards (or stones, but I think Wards) brewery.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Gareth, I still live in Edinburgh. Well, I moved back.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Glasgow native i can say that Edinburgh is Fantastic - its much friendlier and much more interesting than Glasgow. I want to move back.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

by the way - the Edinburgh Dungeon is k-rub and kind of embarrassing. the little boat ride is entertaining, but the rest is just camp, and not in a good way.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

HOORAY someone agrees with me that the brewery smell is exactly like gravy. It always makes me feel like I should be setting the table for sunday lunch but my friend reckons it is the smell of pet food.

Um I am in Edinburgh too, I know I am a persistent lurker but I only just moved up here so if you're having a FAP can I come? I need to get out of the house more.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, the more the merrier!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Glasgow smells of that quite often too. Hops smell nice to me, but sometimes I make the 'boiled up melts for the dog' mental switch and think 'errgh'.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well my friend is Spanish, maybe they just have a higher quality of dog food over there, who knows. Still makes me think of roast beef though. Strangely beer tastes nothing like this.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburgh is CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm another almost-lurker in Edinburgh. Hello.

(I'm told they occasionally have fetish nights at the Edinburgh Dungeon. That's probably the best thing about it)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be up for some FAPish action. Broughton and the pubs near the top of leith walk might be an idea.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I could go an FAP, although it makes me a bit nervous for some reason.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember that everyone in Edinburgh (that isn't a ned) is only about one degree of separation apart. If there is an FAP, we'll probably find that we all recognise each other anyway.

(I definitely would recognise alext on sight, because we were at university at the same time, and I think had mutual acquaintances)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

that's pretty true, it's not a big place

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

who was that guy that used to put on shows, brought over us bands and stuff and paid for it all out of his own pocket because he was really ill, or something? began with D. whatever happened to him?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Mills (yeah, no need to google-proof that!). He was a friend of mine for a while, and after he'd lost loads of other friends. Its a long long story, which I will not post online out of a wierd sense of loyalty I still feel to him. If you really want to know mail me offboard and I'll see if I can fill in the blanks. The email address above should work.

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'd like to know that i think, i'll mail later today, thanks

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dbob?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, this also proves the Edinburgh degrees-of-separation thesis, yet again.

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because it's true!

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, there's a Big Wheel and a little mini German christmas market type thing next to the Scott Monunment just now, worth a wee look - the view from the top of the wheel is grebt.

smee (smee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(the view from the Scott Monument is better, but you have to climb lots and lots of stairs)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to check out Harvey Nicks and Zara in the sales, but they'll be over by February. Whenever I go to Edinburgh, I seem to either be going to one specific place or to a friend's house (which I guess is also one specific place) and then I get the last train home. I'm quite looking forward to a wander. If there's a FAP I could be persuaded to come across.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b Caitlin, the wheel is right next to the monument, almost as tall AND it goes round - do you see?

smee (smee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

True. Personally, though, I think the wheel is better in the dark, what with all the lights and everything; so the view doesn't really matter.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to go on that wheel but nobody will come with me! Admittedly I am scared that it will break while I am at the top and I will die of hypothermia before they rescue me.

None of you would recognise me, however I am sort of cheating because I've only lived here for two months and know about three people. I work at Peckhams though so if you know where it is come in and say hi and buy some expensive food.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That "Haste Ye Back" sign in Rothesay? I was there on Sunday. The other sign there made the news the day we were there (which we failed to spot, despite having a Gaelic speaker in our midst).

there's an 18thC portrait in the gallery that's the spit of someone i went to school with. doppelganger. it was very unnerving when i saw it. reminded me of the beginning of John Dickson Carr's The Burning Court:

Fastened to the page was an old but still very clear photograph of a woman. Under it in small neat letters had been printed: Marie D’Aubray: Guillotined for Murder, 1861. He was looking at a photograph of his own wife.

On my last evening I took a South African colleague to Shebeen, a South African restaurant on Dalry Place (he has lived in Scotland for 20 years and didn't know about it, as I suspect he doesn't eat out too much).

Not mad about it, full on meat but the Durban curry with hollowed out loaf was reasonable. Certainly worth a visit.

Hmm, I'd recommend reading The Skinny https://www.theskinny.co.uk/ for info on upcoming gigs, culture and events across the central belt.

These are a couple decent Edinburgh gig promoters that spring to mind:

https://www.facebook.com/songbytoadrecords/

https://www.facebook.com/nothingeverhappensheresummerhall/

Although I'm now in Manchester and haven't been along yet this will surely be a fun night which is ran by some friends that used to do the massively entertaining 'This is Music' gig/club nights
https://www.facebook.com/supperclubedinburgh

Other irregular dance all night club nights (10pm-3am usually) that are grand: Stacks (soul/Motown/Northern Soul), Unpop (jangle pop/twee/C86), The Egg (Rock 'n' Roll, Garage, New Wave, Psychedelia,Soul and Punk) and Mjolk (Scandi Pop).

Keep an eye on the Wee Red Bar https://www.weeredbar.co.uk/listings.htm at the Art School and Henry's Cellar Bar https://www.facebook.com/Henryscellarbar/ for some more alternative stuff.

You're also not far from the best pizza in Edinburgh - Pizzeria 1926 - Napoli style pizza at phenomenal value.

Oh and I have to say since you're in Gorgie check out Hearts if you like football and have no Scottish football allegiances. Great stadium and it looks like it will be a great wee season for us (we will definitely fall apart by mid-October).

I've been to Edinburgh once, about ten years ago, and it was one of the best holidays I ever had. It was actually in late February and as I was riding the shuttle into town from the airport, the haze and fog completely dissolved in the sun and it was gorgeous. Even on the weekdays, people took their lunch breaks outside, filling a big lawn in the middle of the city. I remember telling someone at a Boots counter how beautiful everything looked outside and she laughed and said "it's usually not like this in February!"

birdistheword, Wednesday, 14 August 2024 22:29 (one year ago)

Deep abiding affection for Edinburgh, not least because my first visit was when I was 9 years old and the whole place seemed kind of magical to me. I've been back several times since — most recently to bring my own kids, about 7 years ago — and have always loved it. But I feel bad that I've never been to Glasgow, so I'll pencil that in for whenever my next Scottish sojourn is.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 August 2024 22:47 (one year ago)

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. I spent the first 18 years of my life there and thre is so much to love and of course at this time of the year, during the festival it is absolutely electric.

it does feel like a town compared to how Glasgow truly feels like a city. Glasgow is undoubtedly culturally superior for 49 weeks of the year but the rivalry between the cities is really quite daft.

stirmonster, Thursday, 15 August 2024 01:32 (one year ago)

it is often said that anyone from anywhere in the world who spends 24 hours in Glasgow is fully entitled to call themselves a Glaswegian, with a caveat that if you were born in Edinburgh you will never qualify as a Glaswegian. I can testify this is true and my Glaswegian wife never lets me forget it!

The Water of Leith walkway was beautiful - I was very envious of everyone that had a house with a backyard that sloped down to the waterway.

birdistheword, Thursday, 15 August 2024 05:51 (one year ago)

I realise I've become settled in here when my immediate response is "Oh Jesus no, don't come in August, it'll be overrun with the English - oh, sorry dog latin". Also sorry, dog latin - I'd love to come out for a pint usually but this month I'm either working or knackered.

I did raise an eyebrow at "undoubtedly culturally superior" - it's not like they deflate the Usher Hall at the end of August. Now gigs, absolutely - Jen's from Perth, which is equidistant travelwise* from Glasgow and I asked her if she'd been through to Edinburgh for bands when she was growing up, and she said no, basically never. If someone's only playing one gig in Scotland, it'll never be in Edinburgh unless they're Murrayfield-sized.

It definitely feels like a city to me, because my default city is Dublin, and it feels a lot more like Dublin than Glasgow does.

*it doesn't look like it! But the train from Edinburgh to Perth stops at every house in Fife and asks if anyone wants something got for them.

I grew up in Fife and for a while there was a really healthy gig scene in Edinburgh. Not as busy as Glasgow but you could see an interesting band somewhere on a regular basis (even if you'd frequently miss the encore because the last train home to Fife is always stupid early)
Then all the venues started being developed so the owners could make more money out of the property. If that didn't happen there would be some kind of mysterious fire (I can remember at least three places that were closed due to fires)
Anyone who tried to start up a venue that could cater to more than 100 people in town found that there was no realistic way to comply with noise regulations
The only places left in the city centre that cater to live music are pubs, the Queen's Hall, Summerhall, Usher Hall and very occasionally the Playhouse. There has been an uptick of activity at the corn exchange since it's been rebranded as an O2 venue but it's in the middle of nowhere

We almost never went to Glasgow for gigs unless someone had access to a car because of the lack of 'late' night public transport back to Fife

I've lived in both Edinburgh and Glasgow and the rivalry between the cities is intensely stupid. Especially when people from either place 'joke' about avoiding the other city. They are both great places to spend time in with loads of things to see and do. They have different strengths but that's about it

On the Perth train - it used to be an express train only stopping at Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing before Haymarket. Then Scotrail decided to start running their service on overtime rather than recruiting staff and suddenly the Fife circle services went away or became very unreliable. Scotrail legally have to provide a service to the smaller towns so the Dundee and Perth trains suddenly started stopping everywhere but North Queensferry and Dalmeny.

There's also no equivalent to the GFT in Edinburgh or arthouse cinemas in Edinburgh I believe? But yes, it's mostly interesting gigs Edinburgh has a dearth of.

There was the Filmhouse. Which is trying to reopen. The Cameo also shows a more arthouse inclined slate of films. The GFT is wonderful

I've noticed over the last few years that there's been a good number of acts who have done their Scotland stop at the Usher Hall. A few that spring to mind from my personal radar...

Beck 2021
The Smile 2022
Wilco 2023
Beth Gibbons 2024
Bob Dylan 2024

Some of these stopped in Glasgow on the previous or subsequent tour though, so seems like they were consciously alternating cities.

I did raise an eyebrow at "undoubtedly culturally superior" - it's not like they deflate the Usher Hall at the end of August.

Ha ha! i was trying to be a touch arch with that comment. both cities are culturally rich.

As far as music goes, I was blessed to grow up in Edinburgh at a time when it was awash with great gig venues and one was spoiled rotten with gig choices.
