when i was young the best of the series always seemed to be 'in the night kitchen', 'wild things' always seemed so damned obvious and flat, but then i found 'outside over there' which is magical and glorious and it became my favorite picture-book ever.

whenever my granma came round my sistah insisted she read where the wild things are out loud => it was read out loud abt ten billions times

Memory test: "The night that Max wore his wolf suit, and made mischief of one kind, and another, AND another, he was sent to his room without any supper. [forget forget] until the walls became the worlds all round, and he sailed for a day and a night, and in and out of weeks, unti he came to the land where the Wild Things are. And the Wild Things rolled their terrible eyes, and gnsshed their terrible teeth, and roared their terrible roars, till Max said BE STILL! [something something] LET THE WILD RUMPUS BEGIN! [rumpus rumpus] [sleep sleep] [bored lonely] [return return] and in and out of weeks. And there in his room his supper was waiting for him AND IT WAS STILL HOT!

How'd I do?!?

I've never even heard of outside over there. what's it like? same child-goes-on-flight-of-fancy theme as the other two? (Is it me, or was the protaganist the same character in both WT and ITNK?). I remember the librarians in my school library drew permanent marker underwear on the kid's nudity in ITNK...

the nudity in outside over there and in the night kitchen is part of what makes them vastly superior to where the wild things are, what child isn't interested in nudity?

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the art was better in WT if that pic was anything to go by

we did not have nudity in the early 60s ethan, it was invented by hippies at woodstock

Sendak came and talked to Pratt last year, in which he revealed that he was never satisfied with anything he'd ever done, but felt as though he was more accomplished as an author than an illustrator. It was a good lecture.

Oh, yeah, and Night Kitchen was responsible for introducing me to the wonderful world of uncut penises at age 4 or so. It caused considerable internal wonder for quite some time.

Outside Over There = book that inspired everyone's favorite David-Bowie-in-tights movie. Wonderful beautiful book. That mother is such a twit.

Yes. Maurice Sendak is lovely. But I'm not gonna try and say which is my favourite book cos I might get the name wrong.

So... The benefits of being raised by a really stupid parent. I Am Sam Vs. Ichabod Crane's mom from Sleepy Hollow (the underrated relatively recent one, not the depressing Disney short).

is anyone familiar with a hole is to dig?
he didn't write it, but illustrated it. we had it when we were kids and i've been looking out for a copy for years but never see it.
i too am very enamoured of in the night kitchen, i can't even begin to explain it; it's just so weird and enchanting, and slightly scary(?) but satisying or kind of comforting at the same time. and the textures are so alluring. and yes i was very interested in mickey's nudity.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

by the alluring textures i guess i mean the dough.
it just is so appealing all that swimming and dressing in food. and of course FLOATING AROUND which at the time (in fact for many years) i was absolutely convinced i could and did do.

elizbeth anne marjorie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes! "A Hole is to Dig" and all other Sendak titles discussed here (and oodles more) were done by the totally fantastic editor of Harpers Books for Tots, Ursula Nordstrom. She discovered him in the first place, he was working as a window dresser for FAO Schwartz, ahem.

I read Outside Over There when I was tiny and it haunted me for years, and went some way in developing my idea of fear, and I never knew what it was until I was at the British Library recently and saw it. Rereading it in the library shop was quite odd. It was just as chilling as it was then.

alix, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which goes to prove all the best people are window dressers.
