I've provisionally arranged to go out 'for a Turkish' in Harringay tomorrow night, but I've no idea where to start. Does anyone have any tips?

I've lived just off Green Lanes for a few years but have never been into any of these places, they scare me for some reason. Try researching here: http://www.london-eating.co.uk/

Thanks Matt. I've been in the Mesapotamia and the food looked great. I don't remember feeling scared, I have to say.

I would recommend Testi, which is on Stoke Newington High Street, if you can make the journey. Speciality: grilled lamb's testicles!

Eek! Thanks for the tip, Neil, although we're meeting friends in the Salisbury later on, so it's really Green Lanes we're after this time.

That's a good pub, enjoy!

Rather ridicuolously I've eaten in both the Italian and Indian restaurants on Green Lanes (Ladder stretch) but only got a takeaway shish like one time.

I went to one about a year ago. The food was good but the service was ludicrously slow. Can't rememeber what it was called, though. I'm sure this will be of considerable use to you.

Basically, you can't go too far wrong, can you? Turkish restaurants in London are, in my experience, both delicious and cheap.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I may take Neil's advice and pop into a random one, unless there are any other specific recommendations before Saturday evening...

When I lived on the ladder, I just used to wander along Green Lanes looking in the windows and base my decision on what looked best. Nip into Dostlar supermarket and stock up on groceries while you're there, if you get the chance.

Also, I can't tell you how jealous I am. I haven't had a turkish for over two years.

Thanks Madchen. I'll look out for Dostlar.

In the end we went to the Mangal, which turned out to be a decent choice.
