thats why theres no dairy in chinese food
in fact, it's mostly only white europeans who can still process lactose after they reach adulthood

Yeah, I don't even think we generally had mayonnaise in the house. I think I remember asking my mom what it was and finding it really weird that something called "miracle whip" wasn't whipped cream.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)
As a white person, I personally only eat food which comes packaged with artwork featuring crude stereotyped depictions of other ethnicities.

We did often because it's non-dairy, hence could be used for after-meat desserts in kosher household.

Oh...
Is there a thread about Jewish stereotypes of Goyim folks? I'm too lazy to research.
― dell, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)
Wonder Bread is too obvious to mention here, maybe? or perhaps not in keeping with the spirit of the origination of the thread, which seemed to be more about white, relatively affluent people as opposed to la sector trashish.
― dell, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
The Diet Coke thing is funny. What's up with people who consume a case of that stuff every couple of days? And how have they not died of cancer yet?
― dell, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)
Aside from the obvious pork, shelfish and meat/milk combos, the things that come to mind as stereotypical "goy food" are stuff like meatloaf, white bread, anything christmasy like plum pudding or fruitcake, mashed potatoes (although we did sometimes have them), pretty much anything southern like open-faced roast beef with gravy. Sloppy joes too, actually.
Course I'm a citizen of the world now and no longer hold such prejudices.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)
My girlfriend eats that Laughing Cow cheese all the time.
― jaymc, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)
(She is a white person.)
I was told that the reasoning behind the meat/milk taboo is because it's like simultaneously eating the parents and baby's source of nourishment. Is that sort of what it's about?
― dell, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah that's where it comes from. It's also just what the rule says and Judaism - the stricter forms of it anyway - is about rules.

Okay. So, this is totally off-topic, and I hope it's not offensive in whatever way, but, my personal observation, Woody Allen caricatures aside, is that people I know who were raised in a Jewish setting (weird phrase, but bear with me) seem to be sooo less neurotic than people who have a Christian upbringing. Like, there's a spectrum in which Jews are least neurotic, Protestants a little more so, and Catholics...Catholics are all fucked-up. (I was raised Catholic so I feel I have some license to make that claim).

― bell_labs, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
I think Northern Europeans, judging largely from their films, lit, and a handful I have met, are the least neurotic people on earth outside of maybe Amazon rainforest people.

I think stereotypes of Jewish neurosis are very much tangled with New York neuroses and immigrant-family neuroses, with the "Jewish" part really not the main one
― nabisco, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)
is there any truth to the legend that chinese food was never fried until the restaurants started moving into black neighborhoods and out of this came kung pao chicken, etc
― max, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)
actually, a lot of white people say that chinese food makes them feel "sick" because the "msg" gives them "migraines" and prefer thai food
― bell_labs, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
eastern europeans are white?
― sexyDancer, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
with malnutrition
― remy bean, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)
Hmm...I agree that Northern Europeans seem to have an overriding healthy approach towards life that is to be admired, but, then again, Ingmar Bergman? But maybe that speaks more to Depression, as opposed to Neurotic. Seasonal Affective Disorder comes into play here, I s'pose.
― dell, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
^^^and spiders.
― Mr. Que, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, Bergman is the first counterexample that popped into mind. I just happen to be reading a Norwegian novel called "Out Stealing Horses" right now and there seem to be so many few hang-ups in the culture. Then again it might just be the rural setting and also the older narrator's nostalgia (which is very much a deliberate part of the novel)
― Hurting 2, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
That doesn't make sense to me...I imagine that people in China were frying stuff in sesame oil in woks fer quite some time.
As one might imagine, though, there are a ton of famous "Chinese" food dishes in America that never existed in China previously.
― dell, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
hey hurting how is that book otherwise
― Mr. Que, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)
I guess Strindberg and Knut Hamsun are counterexamples, as well. lol artists are crazy...

There's a part where it starts raining really hard and the father and son basically strip, soap themselves up and "shower" outside, and once I got over my initial automatic "lol gay" response it sounded kind of awesome.
