Yeah, I don't even think we generally had mayonnaise in the house. I think I remember asking my mom what it was and finding it really weird that something called "miracle whip" wasn't whipped cream.

As a white person, I personally only eat food which comes packaged with artwork featuring crude stereotyped depictions of other ethnicities.

Is there a thread about Jewish stereotypes of Goyim folks? I'm too lazy to research.

Wonder Bread is too obvious to mention here, maybe? or perhaps not in keeping with the spirit of the origination of the thread, which seemed to be more about white, relatively affluent people as opposed to la sector trashish.

The Diet Coke thing is funny. What's up with people who consume a case of that stuff every couple of days? And how have they not died of cancer yet?

Aside from the obvious pork, shelfish and meat/milk combos, the things that come to mind as stereotypical "goy food" are stuff like meatloaf, white bread, anything christmasy like plum pudding or fruitcake, mashed potatoes (although we did sometimes have them), pretty much anything southern like open-faced roast beef with gravy. Sloppy joes too, actually.

Course I'm a citizen of the world now and no longer hold such prejudices.

Yeah that's where it comes from. It's also just what the rule says and Judaism - the stricter forms of it anyway - is about rules.

Okay. So, this is totally off-topic, and I hope it's not offensive in whatever way, but, my personal observation, Woody Allen caricatures aside, is that people I know who were raised in a Jewish setting (weird phrase, but bear with me) seem to be sooo less neurotic than people who have a Christian upbringing. Like, there's a spectrum in which Jews are least neurotic, Protestants a little more so, and Catholics...Catholics are all fucked-up. (I was raised Catholic so I feel I have some license to make that claim).

Hmm...I agree that Northern Europeans seem to have an overriding healthy approach towards life that is to be admired, but, then again, Ingmar Bergman? But maybe that speaks more to Depression, as opposed to Neurotic. Seasonal Affective Disorder comes into play here, I s'pose.

yeah, Bergman is the first counterexample that popped into mind. I just happen to be reading a Norwegian novel called "Out Stealing Horses" right now and there seem to be so many few hang-ups in the culture. Then again it might just be the rural setting and also the older narrator's nostalgia (which is very much a deliberate part of the novel)

That doesn't make sense to me...I imagine that people in China were frying stuff in sesame oil in woks fer quite some time.

As one might imagine, though, there are a ton of famous "Chinese" food dishes in America that never existed in China previously.

There's a part where it starts raining really hard and the father and son basically strip, soap themselves up and "shower" outside, and once I got over my initial automatic "lol gay" response it sounded kind of awesome.

OTM, I didn't have any of these as a kid (except mashed potatoes). Also, very little mac n' cheese (no kraft). I had grilled cheese by the pound but never with tomato soup.
