Taking a Sanity Day

OK so I've got a nutty schedule. I work a 40-hour week, and on my "days off" I have school from 9:30--6:15 with no breaks, plus an hour's commute to and from. It's rough, and I'm making it for the most part, but sometimes I just need a self-indulgent day to sit back and read and listen to records and relax.

Today is that day. I can afford to miss class.

Does anyone else do this? What do like to do on your Sanity Day?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

do nothin and feel guilty about it?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

wait hoos you don't get a lunch break?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

your school does not have presidetn day off?

tehresa, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

I do nothing but only feel guilty about not cleaning around the house. I took one Friday, it was lovely.

I wish I could take a dozen now. I'm building up enough comp time at the moment to take a vacation without actually touching my vacation hours. But who knows when I would be able to.

Bonita Applebum, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

you sorta have to schedule your own time for lunch, and since i need all these classes to graduate by may i can't make the time.

i usually get out of one or another class at least a couple minutes early, enough that i can sit and scarf a sandwich or buy an energy bar or somesuch.

no presidetn's day off, though i'm sure ornaldo bloomps would change this.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

We call it a Mental Health Day!

The one day I called in to work in five years at the job, I called in "over it." "I am just over it."

"Have a good day," my boss said.

roxymuzak, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

since I became an insomniac I've been taking more and more of these :/

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

lol that is awesome dude xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

curt1s :/ ish will pan out for you dude

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

She was an awesome boss. When I came back she was like, "I just could tell you really meant it."

roxymuzak, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

It will pay off in the end. Hang in there.

I just calculated that I have 21 leave days available. I want them so badly I feel like crying.

Bonita Applebum, Monday, 18 February 2008 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

The only suggestion I would make re: a sanity day is to make sure you get out and do something with it - something that YOU want to do, but haven't had a chance to do lately. Go see a movie or two, go for a long hike, go read a book outside the house.

A sanity day where you sit around the house is alright, but you'll feel much more mentally rested if you get out and do some other shit with your self-declared holiday.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 18 February 2008 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i don't know about that - sometimes you just need to lay down or sit somewhere and not actually DO anything

rrrobyn, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

but i know what you mean abt not 'wasting' the time

rrrobyn, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

what if u spend your sanity day posting to ilx

deej, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

bad idea. i speak from experience.

tehresa, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

oh noes i will lose the throne xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

what if your sanity day turns into an insanity day??

rrrobyn, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Srsly though, I think I'm gonna do a couple chores, then maybe the gf and I are gonna go have a picnic or go to a museum or somesuch.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Rrrobyn, this sounds like the byline to a comedy movie.

roxymuzak, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

Hoos is already there (considering his if-not-Hillary-then-Condi voting girlfriend).

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

haha - totally. it will be so wacky! but also poignant in the end!
everyone will have learned a valuable lesson and the lead character will even get a new job out of it, the job they always dreamed of
xpost

rrrobyn, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Hoos is already there (considering his if-not-Hillary-then-Condi voting girlfriend).

Haha, I was just coming to post the same thing!

roxymuzak, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

(p.s. "insomniac" can also be read as "pothead")

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

HOOs, that sounds like an insane schedule in and of itself.

I'm more inclined towards the rrobyn, as opposed to B.L.A.M. school of thinking as far as these things go, but I dunno, maybe doing stuff is just what the doctor ordered?

However, me tend to think that constant focus on business, achievement is more curse than cure, in U.S. culture, anyhow...

dell, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Look, I'm all for the laze around the house day off.

But, for me, getting out and actually doing something fun - having a picnic with s.o., going to a museum, seeing a movie - has always been a better day off for me than just sitting on my ass and watching the hours tick by until my next working day.

Just one man's opinion...

B.L.A.M., Monday, 18 February 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

I usually want the 'sick' days to be doing nothing at the house. No guy around, just sleeping as much as I want, reading a book, eating what I want , etc.

I usually need these because my life is too full of doing things, even recreation. Downtime is so, so important. So is staying off the computer on these days.

Bonita Applebum, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

All true. Since I was doing a fair amount of that these last couple of days, though, today is a chill at home day (and really, due to a few chores and things, I need it -- it actually feels like early spring cleaning).

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 February 2008 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

No, now this is true - if downtime is what's needed, there's nothing like staring at the wall or watching television.

I'm just advocating recreation as more helpful to sanity than doing nothing, given the energy to actually go do something.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 18 February 2008 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

now that i am a part-time student every day is a sanity day

max, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

I imagine there might be some Meyers-Briggs sort of test that addresses this dichotomy...like, "DOING THINGS!" vs "meh, screw that, I don't want to feel guilty about not wanting to go outside just because the weather is beautiful"

dell, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

aw, yay max!

horseshoe, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

:D

max, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

now i have way more time to avoid working on my thesis!!!

max, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone done the "there ain't no sanity clause" gag yet?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

no man, the door for that joke is wide open

max, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

go for it

max, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

There ain't no sanity clause.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

10/10

max, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

There ain't no umbopo. I'm sorry, but it had to be said.

dell, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of people need these because they cannot stand to NOT do something on their days off from work and waste a whole day - I HAVE NO QUALMS with sitting on my ass in my pajamas ALL DAY and do it quite often on Sundays. IT's AWESOME! But yeah, sometimes I call in sick when I'm not sick just because I know there isn't much going on in the office and I don't feel like waking up.

homosexual II, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

alright i'ma play some guitar hero up in this ish

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

atta boy

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

From Condi Rice to Guitar Hero, it's a HOOSANITY DAY

Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Right on. I personally can't play that game for shit, but right on.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 18 February 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Last time I had one of these I spent about 4 hours sitting in a cafe reading, staring at the rain and eating too much cheesecake. Would recommend all other than the cheesecake.

Bee En Juan, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

I plan to take a sanitary day very soon.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

i end up doing this once every two weeks or so. i lay around in bed. make a lavish lunch. watch mad court tv or something.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 February 2008 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

if i'm at my parents house this means svu on tivo all day but yeah now it just means shocking home video shows

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 February 2008 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

I took so many "sanity days" last year I almost lost my job

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

I did that once too! And it's worse when they're actually because you're having sanity issues.
