Low-heeled dress shoes, usu with squared toes and some kind of buckle design. I have them in patent black, patent red, yellow leather, black leather, and some other varying types. All about 1" heels.

Also, I think of all blue dress shirts, from proper Oxford light blue to that "French" or "country" vivid cornflower color, as "midtown blue". And probably 95% of the time they fit their wearers abominably. Dud there.

Sometimes a nice one looks really awesome on someone with blue eyes or whatev and I have to think "Oh yeah that's right, blue shirts aren't inherently evil!"

I need to stop drinking so much so I can afford more clothing.

Nothing more specific than a navy or dark gray suit, some of them pinstriped, and white or blue or both shirt (with the odd pink thrown in on more summer-y days), usually tieless, but I do those too, some trad, some less so. I'm basically too cheap to buy shirts that fit well.

i have 3 pair of dark brown cords that i wear very regularly. today it's a pair of flannel lined pants (air temp was 4 above when i left this morning), yesterday it was a pair of "wheat" colored cords.

This time of year, it's the green sweater. I have three, they are virtually identical, and at least half the shirts in my closet look ok-to-good under them. Next choice: black sweater, which is even more versatile color-wise, but I only have two.

These days? White cotton undershirt.

When working and not studying? Flat front khakis. I could live in them.

I've got a pair of dark grey and a pair of drab olive dungaree-style cords that I wear religiously. I wear em with t-shirts, hoodies, dressier button-downs, nice sweaters, whatever.

I also have a lot of... uh... striped shirts.

I figured out the blue oxford + charcoal pants combination, it is designed to make the person wearing it look like an office building.

i've got 3-4 brown or dark green button down shirts, a couple of which have epaulets and look a little military.

Old Navy fitted long sleeved crewneck t-shirts. I have black, white and heather gray. Mainly because they are utter crap, the feel soft and broken and even evidence small holes after ONE WASH. But they look good if you can't afford like a Banana Republic or A.P.C. equiv.

I have at least a dozen, elbow-length, scoop-neck knit shirts in various colors. Today it's yellow. These are paired up with various skirts and mid-height heels, boots at least once a week.

Once or twice a week I'll wear pants (or dark jeans if I am meeting-less) and higher heels.

i have no idea where dude lives, but just go to a tailor if you have that much trouble with what you're buying off the rack.

To tailor what you need to to make an off the rack shirt look nice is more expensive than importing shirts from countries with ... less prodigious waistlines.

a big reason for my mock collar fandom is that regular fitted dress collars abrade my neck uncomfortably and rack shirt collars just look sloppy. I like crew sweaters too but I don't take to scarves and badge lanyards are just annoying on a bare neck so I usually reserve crews for the weekends

I still haven't worked out how to wear a sweater over a long-sleeve button down shirt. My sleeves get all out of wack and I can never figure out how to make the collars behave.

Shasta's right that you can just get stuff tailored, just like you can just get stuff that fits right off the rack, but it isn't cheap or for the lazy.

It's impossible to find affordable nice fitting clothing if you're a skinny/average dude.

Ha, try being 6'5" with big shoulders and let me know much easier it is.

I can wear slim-fit shirts in terms of chest and arms, but in order to comfortably wear a tie I suddenly have to go up a size from what feels right / looks right. I don't think I have a thick neck, but . . . I guess I do.

My equivalent is A-line skirts. I have four of them all the same brand and design, just in different colors. Yes, I bought them all at once.

How lazy are we talking here? I can do this, and I'm pretty frickin' lazy. The same nice lady who takes my dry cleaning also does alterations and repairs on anything.

wow it's not wrong to hope that mccain gets even more liver-spotty in the next few months is it? i wear banana republic flat front slacks just about every weekday. 5 or 6 pairs, 1 1/2 colors between them.

whatever, i have a heavy jacket.

i basically wear the same thing all year round...jeans, t-shirts, button-downs with the sleeves rolled up. it's a little warm in the summer, a little cold in the winter, but it keeps things simple.

A couple of cotton/silk short sleeve blouses (a bit oversized & a bit of a sheen to them, very lightweight.. I hate dress shirts), a couple of 3/4 sleeve jackets (navy, black, some are vintage), vintage 40's or 80's-does-40's rayon tops (navy, black), Club Monaco menswear style trousers, fitted v neck sweaters (navy, black, dark beige), pencil skirts (navy, black). guess what, I wear navy and black together a lot.

I saw this thread and was like "Hell yeah - Blue Oxford Shirt!" But reading through it, it seemed like no one else was nearly as enthused about them as I am.

Out of the first 100 google results for "blue oxford shirt", this thread is the only result that says anything remotely disparaging about them.

I have often found previous ilx fashion discussions helpful - for instance, I have stopped buying pleated pants.

What do these shirts signify to you?

Carhartt short-sleeved "clerk" shirts - I must own about ten of these in various colours and they suit my work-life *perfectly*: really practical and hard-wearing, can be washed and washed without suffering, don't look too scruffy but also mean I can do manual elements of my job without worrying about ruining my clothes. They're also really reasonably priced, which makes a wallet-saving change from previous jobs (suits all the way).
