I find it amazing that it has survived to its current state, still looking imposing and stately compared to other ruins. And I find it especially amazing that its columns are bowed, correcting perspective and appearing straight!

It's like Disneyland. They clean it up every night.

And it survived being blown up by my fellow countryfolk!

Sunny, you probably weren't seriously asking, but in case you were: here - and they link to here - but be aware that they look quite ridiculous (search for "eye-catching" on that page)
― StanM, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)
The friezes and marbles were painted originally, I think. Would we think of it the same way if they still were?
― Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:32 (eighteen years ago)
I doubt it - this looks very cartoony :-/
― StanM, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:38 (eighteen years ago)
Haha YES that is like the biggest joke of the Classical world, the original garishness of EVERYTHING. Not for them the tonal simplicity that we find so pure and classic.

TS: parthenon vs pantheon
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:40 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it bemuses me that we so often have Classical art rong. But I reckon the Parthenon wd be even more awesome in living colour.
― Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
ILX c. 5th century BC "oh wtf they're tearing down my local to put up another fucking temple" "like the fucking acropolis needs more of those. RIP Cimon's"

It is pretty funny to think the U.S. Capital was deliberately made drab due to a misunderstanding of classical structures.
― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)
I visited the Acropolis in 1998. Me and my travel companion got our tickets and then went to the bathroom to change into togas and stick some laurel in our hair.
We got arrested and kicked out. They let us back in once we changed.

― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:26 (eighteen years ago)
Hahahahah kate, my four friends and I took the sheets off our beds the last night at our hotel and wore them to breakfast with laurel sprigs behind our ears. The staff at least pretended to be amused and didn't fine us or anything...but then we didn't try to leave the building, either.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)
how do you just come across laurel sprigs?
also, I knew a guy who thought the phrase "resting on one's laurels" was "resting on one's lorries"

I visited the Acropolis in 1973 (on my 8th birthday nonetheless!). Not much of it was fenced off then, and it was a blast running around the place.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 21 February 2008 06:13 (eighteen years ago)
Talking of spring water, bottles of the stuff cost like 20 euros at the Acropolis. Blimming rip-off merchants.
― Madchen, Thursday, 21 February 2008 12:54 (eighteen years ago)
Emily, there are lots of bay laurel trees in Greece! I'm sure we stripped some tree bare. Stupid tourists.
― Laurel, Thursday, 21 February 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)
xpost I paid $8 for a coke at Trevi Fountain in 1997. I knew I was being ripped off but I dont know how to argue in Italian.
― sunny successor, Thursday, 21 February 2008 15:25 (eighteen years ago)
Oh and thanks StanM. I was serious BTW.
― sunny successor, Thursday, 21 February 2008 15:29 (eighteen years ago)
Oh. In that case they don't look ridiculous :-)
― StanM, Thursday, 21 February 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)
At the Trevi fountain, I saw a woman throw a giant magnet into the water, reel it in, wrap the coin-covered magnet in newspaper, and run off!
― kate78, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)
so now that greece has built a modern, climate-controlled museum at the acropolis, will england give the elgin marbles back? hmmm?
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:08 (eighteen years ago)
while Frank sang "Three coins OUTTA DA Fountain..."
― Mark G, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)
The story about the Greeks de-listing as historically interesting Vangelis' house, so they can demolish it to provide a better view of the Acropolis from the restaurant of the new museum is totally WTF.
― aldo, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
How about they take Prince Philip instead?
― Madchen, Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:30 (eighteen years ago)
The British aren't budging on that. Their argument seems to be against having the marbles together in one location at all, as a general application of this ideal would "empty the world's great museums." I.e., museums are more important than art, or history?
