I've always attached a bobby pin to the end of the string, which makes it a zillion times easier to guide along, just scrunch it through from the outside and that's that. Or just throw it out and buy a new one.

I took a wire hanger, straightened it out (mostly), used a pair of needle nose pliers to pinch around the strong, then pushed the other end through the hood out the other side, and then dragged the string through. Basically the same way you run wire through conduit.

wire hangers, straightened, are so long you can even just push it through first, THEN pinch the string on to the other end. Also, for convenience, I recommend using the pliers to cut off the rest of the hanger.
