Since (soon)this is no longer pre-game, shouldn't there be a show/postmortem thread?

i was lolling at "you rocked my LIFE!"

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

"thank you, life! thank you, love!"

da croupier, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

boo hiss

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno. I guess his was a high-profile death, given his age, but i'm sure there's a handful of behind-the-scenes artists who died last year, didn't make the cut (there's always next life), and had a greater impact on the industry. Is tragically young reason enough?

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

otoh, it would have taken 4 or 5 seconds.

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder how the academy even puts their "in memorium" together. Obviously actors are weighted way more heavily than any other profession. Then directors, producers, DP's on down the chain. Basically you better be the world's greatest gaffer if you're gonna make the cut.

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

I could sort of see why they might not include Renfro (didn't think he was big enough, known for getting into all sorts of trouble, etc) but then again, it was just a glaringly noticeable omission given that he died less than a week before Ledger, and was around the same age. I don't really see why he shouldn't have made the cut considering that he started acting earlier, was in a few memorable films, and had been noted for being a fine actor despite all his later problems.

Roz, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i mean it's not the crime of the century and it's mostly its recentness that made it a noticeable omission. but he did some interesting stuff. (onscreen too, ba-dum-bum). it would have been nice to see him.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah also apparently, both the BAFTAs and SAG included him in their tributes.

Roz, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

they left whooopi goldberg and steve martin out of the montage of oscar hosts as well, apparently (or so I've heard from EVERYONE ON EARTH WHO WATCHES THE FUCKING VIEW), I think this oscars was probably kind of slapped together.

akm, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

None of the montages were comprehensive except for the one for Best Picture. The ones for the acting/directing categories were chronological but sometimes they'd skip five years or so to maintain momentum (as long as it was before 1990, so no one would really notice).

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 07:01 (eighteen years ago)

I would have rather had Renfro than Jack Valenti, that's for sure.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I realized how much I hated that guy until he was in the montage though, so perhaps it served a purpose.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I know that sounds pretty Shakey Mo.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

did Brad Renfro make one decent film besides Bully, aside from his brief role in Ghost World?

Edward Yang's films have been almost impossible to see in America, but Yi Yi did win a bunch of US awards (not an Oscar, characteristically).

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

omg, Jane Russell lives...

http://dlisted.com/node/24073

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

?!? Okay, I am honestly surprised, I had no idea she was still alive.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

I was channel surfing last night and caught a story on Nightline about Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova. Apparently they'd agreed that Hansard would give the speech and then Irglova was only going to say "Thank You." She's also the first person in Oscar history who got cut off that was brought back to speak again.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

FWIW, I have never heard of Brad Renfro

caek, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

xp: and it was SO worth it...

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

probably was for her!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

not a good standard.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Then why do you watch the Oscars at all? To grouse that no one in America remembers that Edward Yang died?

Eric H., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

You mean man.

(x-post)

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

I actually didn't watch the first 2 hours at all, bcz I was shaking my TV, trying to get a picture!

(EH is grumpy when Slant only gets 16/24)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Although yes, Yang (and Renfro) should have been included. Certainly that montage could have been six seconds longer.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Ummm who put Miley in Valentino?

I'm quite happy to defend Tilda Swinton, she rocks, posh or not. Derek Jarman too.

Fight the real enemy for once, 'Enery.

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

i thought tilda swinton was great! she made BATMAN jokes for crying out loud. i dont understand you brits.

Gary Busey should get all Ryan Seacrest's jobs. At least for a month.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krDoAUJDcKU

Kerm, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have been out of America too long to cope with Ryan Seacrest at all.

I laughed my ass off when I heard Tilda Swinton's speech. Also, yo, she's SCOTTISH. Of course she's going to give Clooney stick.

Oscartopsy call from my mother was very Mpls-centric and went YAY TEH COENS HOMEBOI RULZE, OMG DIABLO CODY LEOPARD FAT SUIT, HOW SHE WAS EVER STRIPPER?

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

The Ryan Seacrest red carpet interviews were great, he is so glib and creepy and horrible.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

your mom thinks diablo cody is fat?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Not really. It's my mother's job to harsh on one woman each Oscars (nice, but for inventing the Renee Zellweger Blowjob Face we must all forgive) hence OMG LEOPARD FAT SUIT OH NOES TACKY TAT N BINGO WINGS, NOT FLATTERING.

Fuck, if I had my pick of ALL THIS DIOR the animal print would never be selected.

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

did she send you a telegram?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

>_<

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

What did she say about the alien-like Tilda Swinton?

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Renee Zellweger Blowjob Face

uh

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

tilda swinton rulez

omar little, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

Rulez what, the underworld?

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

NARNIA, duh

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

I should have figured that.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

No offense to her, but I saw a pic where she was next to Marie Cotillard after the awards and let's just say she "pales" in comparison.

What a hottie Marie is though, damn.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

What a hottie Marie is though, damn.

Yes, Best Actress is voted mostly with stiff dicks these days.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Helen Mirren gets nothing but hard statuettes and bubblegum

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

^^reference that will be totally lost on basically everyone in this thread

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost Yes, she is a hottie.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/graphics/filmslide/lavieenrose/pic3.jpg

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

hotties with ugly prosthetics do esp well (Charlize as Wuornos)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

had I known the actress was a hottie (only knew pics like that) she would have definitely would have made my pool.

da croupier, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

lol, Musto:

10:23 p.m.: It's time for the drippy "Once" song sung by the busker and the immigrant. This Czech should be bounced. So should this entire tuneless category. Can it, Oscar!

10:51 p.m.: What is everyone slipping on onstage? Did one of the pregnant people break water or did Julie Christie sprinkle some slime up there for Cotillard to die on? But here's a real slipup: The Once song wins! The best four notes I ever heard!
