Taking your kids clubbing, C/D?

Baby Loves Disco is a phenomenon which has swept across the United States in the last three years, since a waitress in a small club in Philadelphia had the idea. Thanks to word of mouth and the internet, events now take place in 30 cities.

Now, British parents and toddlers are getting the dancefloor bug too.

Deprived of a social life since the birth of their children, mums and dads are grasping at the chance of a few hours of cheesy fun. The Baby Loves Disco franchise is running events in London and Manchester, with plans to expand into Glasgow, Edinburgh, Brighton and several other European cities.

While most discos operate a lower-age limit, this does the opposite - setting a maximum age bar, for children, at seven.

Blimey.

I'm not sure I'd want to do this myself, but this is one of those 'damn, I wish I'd thought of it' things.

Parents of ILE, where do you stand on this?

"Some people actually borrow kids to come here with"

Hmm

blueski, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'd totally take my three-year-old to an age-appropriate concert; she's just reached the point where she really responds to music, sings along, etc. But I already didn't go "clubbing" myself as a single person, so I don't know if I'd take my kid to one. Maybe a preschool indiepop night or something.

"Some people actually borrow kids to come here with"

As Nick Hornby comes up with a great idea for a sequel.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

could have sworn we had a thread on this!! yeah it's everywhere. i think it's just fine, clubbers get older, have kids, bound to happen.

it seems less lame to me than bringing your baby to a rock show, somehow. if there were a 'rock for tots' show to bring them to.

gff, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

this would be really great for a kid's hearing

Vicky, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Seen some people at one of these things on TV months ago. Would trample over my own kids to avoid.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm for it, as long as they only give their kids a half

If they wanted a social life, they shouldn't have had kids.

This basically sounds like paying to go to a wedding reception.

31g, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Crank it up...to THIS many!!!"

haha! My kids would LOVE playing with the DJ faders, come to think of it.

mike a, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

- people like wedding receptions
- cover charge is cheaper than flatware / immersion blender
- don't have to sit and clap politely through bride/groom or bride/father dances
- special VIP room for single parents to get grinding on one another

nabisco, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

I just worry about these poor children, lured into the nightlife and then deprived of it between the ages of 7 and 18.

nabisco, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

It's more like early preparation for middle school dances and bar mitzvahs.

31g, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

No one tell Kim Fowley about this, OK? (Those who've read WE GOT THE NEUTRON BOMB will know what I mean.)

mike a, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Deprived of a social life since the birth of their children

They're called "babysitters" and "grandparents." Look into them.

mike a, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ Good idea if you have willing grandparents or money for sitters, but it doesn't always work that way.

"We weren't ravers even before we had a kid, but we can't go out for a meal or a drink very often as both sets of parents live in Canada and it costs a fortune to get babysitters."

Is this the final piece in the MISSING MADDY jigsaw?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to see kids being exposed at such a young age to wholesome fare like "Word Up" and "Bootylicious."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

yep thats the real evil of these things.

but then again, the indiedisco version would be way worse

Thomas, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Hi folks, Spokesperson for Amber and Alice here.

It depends on what you mean by 'clubbing', and what the basic difference between 'it' and the 'entry level' (shall we say) havens/butlins/pontins style 'kids disco'.

If the difference is minimal (and I suspect it is), then what exactly is the fuss about?

As for the 'wholesome' fayre just mentioned, that's nothing: Kids want to be gettin' down to 'super freak' and not just because it was in "LMSunshine' (and no, they have not seen it).

It's dance music, and so they dance to it. Alice has always been a fantastic dancer for her age, so the old traditional 'nellyEl' and 'ringyringy' just does not cut it as it maybe did, for longer/older age kids than now.

There's a lot of music around.
