Wehoohahh... It's going to be a busy Saturday.
FYI, Saturday night is the closing of the Bruce Licher/IPR retrospective at Dangerous Curve. Reportedly, the Urinals are going to be playing w/Bruce guesting on guitar.

I'm in for FAP, most likely.

I will be in Hawaii, celebrating the end of my bar exam experience, so no FAP for me.

"13. Teriyaki Boyz - Tokyo Drift"
A GREAT song from a GREAT movie, but more night driving...

more for...
(produced by The Neptunes actually)
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 03:01 (eighteen years ago)
more night driving...
Too right, Spencer. The night commute is Miracle Mile, through the neon jungle.
Neptunes, really? They really did a good job with that. There is one mix of "Speed" by Atari Teenage Riot from F&F:TD that I like, too.

I never saw this thread. Fare thee well, Remy. We didn't hang out enough but I wish you the very best at your next stop.

Goodbye Los Angeles,
It has been awfully nice living in you. Nearly four years, in Koreatown, Los Feliz, Palms/Mar vista, and a number of shady streets and neighborhoods during a one-month between-apartment squat in the fall of '06.
I will miss my little house near Venice Blvd, ten minutes from the beach and three from Café Brazil, I will miss my roommate J., and his wonderful golden retriever Riley, who has been my constant companion for the past fourteen months. I will miss my work at the W.S., in spite of how things turned out ... I will miss all of my students, especially M, the greatest ten-year-old on the planet, and I hope he will remember me a friend for life. I will miss his family, too, who have been my primary employers, greatest support, and provisional 'home' since June.
I will miss running in Griffith Park, running on Franklin Blvd at nightfall, I will miss hikes at Topanga Canyon. I look forward to the next time I can eat at any of a million favorite Jonathan Gold recommended-restaurants. I will miss the over-full farmers markets (plural), Amoeba runs, sneak-parking at the Getty, caffeinated writing at Stir Crazy, Psychobabble, Alcove, Insomnia, etc., I will miss getting high on the roof of the USC parking center, trolling the pool at the Standard, impromptu parties thrown by house-sitters in the hills of Hollywood and Malibu. I will miss my writing group, the surly bastards at rocket video, I will ...
I'm not gonna bother to list any more.
I will miss my friends B*n, J*a, S*a, W*e, and R*é especially. And my LA ILX friends Ned, Arthur, Keith, Jody, Matt, Adam, Lisa, Vic, Jeff, Nick, Chris, Max, Spencer, and Laura. (And whoever I thoughtlessly neglected to include on this list.) I hope to see you all somewhere in the future, sometime soon.
And now:
Radio Silence. A few days in Big Sur. Decompression, Decontamination. Much love, big city.

i think tony valdez must be editing the saturday edition of fox evening news. There was a feature on the tuskegee airmen getting honored, extensive coverage of the women's antiwar march downtown, a random piece about a mom who lost her son last year due to treachery from one of his so-called friends(they don't know who) and tony himself pleading for someone to step forward, it was very moving. He's kind of a blowhard but Tony Valdez' heart is in the right place, more than i can say from pretty much any other broadcaster on locals. I miss Jess Marlow too.
― tremendoid, Sunday, 9 March 2008 12:34 (eighteen years ago)
I miss Jerry Dunphy too although much of the time it seemed he had but a vague handle on what he was reading. Was he really the model for Ted Baxter? I think I heard that.

― Agent ov Fortune (J3ff T.), Friday, 26 December 2008 06:04 (seventeen years ago)
caek, if you're needing to get around in that area, you're in luck. It's the one place in the city of the angels that has a decent public transport system. do not take a taxi as AoF says you'll be broke in no time. let me see if there is a decent link I can give you. standby
― Wiggy Woo, Friday, 26 December 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)
Hi Caek,
Don't know exactly when you'll be here in LA, but look to this thread and see if you can rally a FAP if there is time. In general this is a pretty helpful site for all things Angeleno: http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/visitors/transportation/public-transit#bus
Special Thanks to the large gay population in LA, so organized! (I am jealous.)it links you to restaurants and lodging and things to do and see, in addition to being a great source of transport info for visitors.
Best wishes on your visit and I hope all your experiences are 100% positive.
Here is some info about public transport for your info:

― Wiggy Woo, Friday, 26 December 2008 07:33 (seventeen years ago)
Caek -
Fastest and most cost effective way to get from LAX to Downtown is to take the Flyaway bus to Union Station. Downtown is just a Red Line subway stop away. To get to Silver Lake you can take the Sunset Blvd. bus or the 92 bus (runs up Glendale Blvd)

― eman cipation s1ocklamation (max), Friday, 26 December 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)
supershuttle is the name of one and i dont remember the other
Prime Time is the other big one.
Also, if you're going to use the bus/train when you're here, get a day pass ($5 last time I bought one) and you can use the busses, Metro rail trains (not Metro Link, which go farther), and the DASH busses.
― nickn, Friday, 26 December 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)
yah, supershuttle to my housesit in silverlake is not a problem and I I won't be going far from silverlake for the first few days. Just hitting a couple of bars and getting something to eat, which will be easier with a couple of cab numbers in my pocket. I will also be getting the blue line down to long beach, but i need to get to 7th St/Metro Center at like 5am to pick this up, so figured I would get a cab there. once i have been in town for a few days I may feel happier driving.
― caek, Friday, 26 December 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)
thanks for all the bus info, btw everyone. very useful!
if anyone has a tip for somewhere good to eat that is close (walkable?) from mohawk st, silverlake for our first meal then shoot.
― caek, Friday, 26 December 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
how "walkable" do you mean (Nobody Walks in LA) is a mile out of the question? Also, what time approx will you be at the residence?
― Wiggy Woo, Friday, 26 December 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)
a mile is totally fine, i should make it from lax by around 5pm
most stuff is open on new year's day, right?
― caek, Friday, 26 December 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)
Hmmm. not absolutely sure about the open on NY day thing - I would suggesting calling before you go, but I in general I would say yep, dining/drinking spots will be open.

― caek, Friday, 26 December 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)
Brite Spot on Sunset at Glendale is good but a little expensive
― caek, Friday, 2 January 2009 22:18 (seventeen years ago)
Well, define 'nice little beach community.' (For OC I could sorta suggest Seal Beach, Laguna Beach or San Clemente but none of them are perfect.)
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 January 2009 22:20 (seventeen years ago)
Dana Point is beautiful, not sure what the availability of accommodations there is.
― Agent ov Fortune (J3ff T.), Friday, 2 January 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
I'm already booked in at Santa Barbara so that's settled. Was hoping it would be warmer than this though!
― caek, Friday, 2 January 2009 22:52 (seventeen years ago)
Has anyone been to El Prado on W Sunset? http://elpradobar.com/ looks like it could be awesome or horrible.
― caek, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)
I like it--I'd put it closer to "awesome" than "horrible"--but more in the category of pop in for a drink rather than a destination unto itself. It's good to see an LA bar with some varied beers on tap. Also, it's way smaller than the pictures on the website suggest, but when I've gone it hasn't been too cramped or anything.
― robotsinlove, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)
is there only one table? can you sit at the bar without being in the way?
― caek, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
there is seating at the bar, which is probably preferable, and then a few tables against the wall opposite the bar. though when i've gone i don't think i managed to get a seat at either bar or table - still didn't ruin it or anything.
― robotsinlove, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:56 (seventeen years ago)
I'm going on my own, so I would like to sit at the bar. I will be there early whichever night I go on. I will give it a shot. Good times.
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:02 (seventeen years ago)
I'm keen on it not because it looks particularly good or whatever, but because it is a ten minute walk from where I am staying in Echo Park. I don't see a lot else in the area apart from maybe the Red Lion and Cha Cha Lounge to the north and some weird sounding places further east on Sunset.
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:04 (seventeen years ago)
Alegria is good but not if you're too drunk from before and wind up throwing up outside leading to the company you're with never talking to you again
― Vichitravirya_XI, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:23 (seventeen years ago)
"Brite Spot on Sunset at Glendale is good but a little expensive"
IMHO it's the single worst place to eat in LA. And it's my local!
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:09 (seventeen years ago)
"some weird sounding places further east on Sunset."
Little Joy (probably one of these) is actually really great no matter what people on this thread or anywhere else will tell you. I drink solo there all the time! Short Stop is just ok. I don't like The Gold Room. El Prado is ok but very narrow and loud and full of horrible people. I quite like the lounge at Taix on off nights and when there isn't a band playing. Go there!
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:13 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe I got lucky. My food was fine. Service was a little eccentric, but obv. much better than I'm used to in the UK. Main complaint was the price. xp
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:14 (seventeen years ago)
Ah yes, the UK.
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:14 (seventeen years ago)
Is Little Joy the big black place with "COCKTAILS" written outside?
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:15 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe I will start at Little Joy and Short Stop and jump on a bus down to El Prado and Taix.
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:16 (seventeen years ago)
yes - COCKTAILS
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:22 (seventeen years ago)
"Maybe I will start at Little Joy and Short Stop and jump on a bus down to El Prado and Taix."
No need, this is totally walkable. You could eat or get a beer at Masa (across from Prado) too!
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:23 (seventeen years ago)
Also there is Echo Park's tiny but ok Farmer's Market at (I think) Logan just South on Sunset which will be going on tonight (I assume).
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:26 (seventeen years ago)
South OF Sunset
ok, this sounds like an adventure. if I finish my work before 8pm then i will do this tonight. do you know if any of these places charge cover on fridays?
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:26 (seventeen years ago)
I don't think so but sometimes there is a line outside of Prado (or am I imagining things)
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:29 (seventeen years ago)
Also there is Stories, a new bookstore on Sunset but it is rubbish
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:30 (seventeen years ago)
thanks! i leave this part of town for the time being tomorrow morning at 6am, so I will not have a chance to hit most of these places, but i will make a note of them. might be back here in a couple of weeks.
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:35 (seventeen years ago)
this is what you should do next time you're in silverlake, closer to the other side by sunset junction - all walking distance. note: some of these places may not be heterosexual:
The Eagle (do not feed the bears)AkbarMaloTiki TiNadpob 4100 CheetahGood Luck Bar
then walk up Hillhurst to Ye Rustic Inn, which will make you stop drinking. you can get arrested in their little strip mall since the cops are always around
― Vichitravirya_XI, Saturday, 3 January 2009 02:41 (seventeen years ago)
what is that tiki place like? I wonder
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 04:43 (seventeen years ago)
No, that's the Short Stop. Little Joy is blue, or white, I think. No sign outside that I've ever seen.
― Jouster, Saturday, 3 January 2009 04:49 (seventeen years ago)
yes you're right. but the phrase "Little Joy" is painted on the wall that leads off of sunset
