Slooooooooooooooooooow Cities

A development from the slow food movement in Italy. The idea is based around more qualitative leisure time and enjoying local produce. Apparently there are quite a few registered slow cities already in Italy and some British places have applied for membership. I think it's a grand idea. Do You?

where do I sign up, I like to be slow.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Enjoying local produce in London = pigeon sandwiches, pigeon pie, pigeon stew, rat rissoles, rat fritters etc.

i think Emma may have a point. soot burgers for the vegetarians please!

Most of the "cities" that were mentioned were nothing of the sort, more large town kind of places. Kew could probably qualify for slow city status and then the inhabitants could eat heron.

Haggis neeps and tatties with porridge for breakfast -no thanks

Surely you could exist solely on Edinburgh rock?

Jonnie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a nice idea and seems to work. I suspect it'd be harder to impement in Britain though, because the British are twats. Just out of interest, is there anyone here that would want to conme and live somewhere remote and do subsistance farming with me? People keep asking what I'm going to do when I graduate and so far this is the nicest option. I'm serious, btw.

alix, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lixi, please don't be a hippy.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My friend Lizzie would probably do that with you. She's dead into soil. That said though there are loads of places where you can labour on organic subsistence farming for the camaraderie, no money but lots of sex apparently.

You need to get the Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall book if you don't already have it - it's great.

Jonnie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'M NOT A HIPPY. It doesn't necessarily entail patchouli oil and tye dyed kaftans. In fact, if it did, I wouldn't. It's just an idea. I haven't really thought it through. I would need money. Though, would I have to pay back the student loan if I wasn't earning? Hmm? My brother wants to, but as we know, he's a mentalist.

alix, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

phew thankgoodness for that. Sorry Alix but I had to check.

I could never be a hippy, you can't get all gastropornographic about lentils and nettle soup.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's why I'd be fine. I'm no gastropornographer. In fact I'll eat anything. I missed brekkie because I got to Vauxhall and almost bought fruit there but realised my train was soon, so went and sat on the platform, but then the train was cancelled and I sat there not knowing when the next one was, so I couldn't go back down to get fruit. Now I am ravenous. And it was bloody freezing and windy. Please, someone feel sorry for me!

alix, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've been slobbering over pictures of Tapas all day, hmmm lovely bacalao and chorizo.

chris, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When do you graduate?

Graham, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

more qualitative leisure time

This immediately makes me think of the 'legislated fun' that I have always casually HATED in summer camps, package tours, etc. Time off should mean doing whatever the hell you want to.

Grand, grand. Im ready. Ac-tual-ly the whole of Dunedin is in training.

ducklingmonster, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somehow I can't imagine NYC ever doing this.

geeta, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Dunedin does almost gastropornagraphic lentil soup. So we're ahead already! Though I doubt that they're grown locally.

isadora, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
