I really hate it when people talk to me when I'm chowin' down, I wanna pretend that I could sit at the Algonquin Round Table and make quips an shit but all I wanna do is pasta. Is it evolutionary? am I secretly worried that people are gonna steal my food? Do you like talking while you eat? Apparently in the construction industry it's a big thing and there's total silence during lunch. I like that.
― bingolola, Monday, 3 March 2008 07:30 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe this is ilx construction worker lunchtime.

On the other hand, if they pontificate while I'm eating, I can at least get something useful done instead of having to stand there and pretend that I give a shit.

>Apparently in the construction industry it's a big thing and there's total silence during lunch.
Frankly, that sounds like a truly civilised approach. The office here is totally open plan and it recently feels like my sitting down with lunch is a signal to co-workers to immediately ask loads of work related questions. Today I had hot soup and was bearing down for imminent OM NOM NOM when a colleague decided to open a lengthy debate about configuring a particular piece of kit. So hot soup was soon gazpacho. Fuck's sake!!
― Bill A, Monday, 3 March 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)
oh i hate that, that's why i avoid our canteen. FUck off talking about work whilst i'm eating.
and lol @ "OM NOM NOM"
― Ste, Monday, 3 March 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)
FUck off talking about work whilst i'm eating ever
― blueski, Monday, 3 March 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
eating annoys me and i enjoy someone around to distract me.

eating annoys me
Do not understand.
― chap, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
I feel bad about not being the "chew, converse, have some wine, slow down, converse more, take a bite" kind of eater...usu I have my nose in a book and am also v hungry and chowing down. Not very sociable.
― Laurel, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)
err so how do you do when you go to the restaurant with someone ?
― AleXTC, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)
I never eat out, actually! Would like to start doing more but so little time...
― Laurel, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)
today at lunch i heard someone eating VERY NOISILY with obvious OPEN MOUTH just like "chonk smack tsk burp" and i was like jesus f on a stick! some people! and i turned around to glare at them and it was this very well put together japanese girl with her hair up in a bun and perfect makeup and pearl earrings, and she looked at me over the rims of her glasses and took another bite like "smack chonk scchlurp" jesus
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)
It's part of an "art de vivre" ! spending hours at a restaurant or at someone's place, with friends/family, just talking, eating, drinking, smoking... this is how we do (french) !
― AleXTC, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
^^^ I think I might fall in love with this girl if I saw her.
xpost
― chap, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
you forgot the arguing part
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
Aww Tracer, I like that.
― Laurel, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, Alex, I am probably 95% of the time eating alone.
― Laurel, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
guys it wasn't cute, easting with your mouth open is only justifiable if you are on active military duty or eating fried chicken around members of the same sex
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)
yeah agreed. i have a weird phobia of chewing noises. it really bothers me!
― bell_labs, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)
arguing is of course key (especially on politics) !
― AleXTC, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)
lip smacking is near the top of my pet peeves list except its not really a pet peeve cause its actually wrong and indefensible
― jhøshea, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)
Well I do agree on the bothering aspect when it's daily lunch with colleagues (which I don't do, by the way. I prefer eating alone except when it's business lunch but I only like this because it's mostly in great restaurants !). but I make a great difference between things when they're related to work or not (eating, drinking, partying etc).
― AleXTC, Monday, 3 March 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)
loud eaters, like Tracer's, make me want to barf. as for finding it annoying - i just do. i don't find it all that pleasurable and would rather spend my time on something else.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)
(eating that is)
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)
i feel like a jerk for hating eating noises, it's just one of those things. the horror of watching my parents eat corn on the cob, etc.
― bell_labs, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)
dude I've been working with smacks his food like a 7 year old eating fruit loops in front of sat morning cartoons. This guy is Princeton educated, Stanford Law grad from a well-heeled Southern family. I mean how did he get this far with those kinds of manners?
― will, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
ooh i totally agree! i don't like talking while i eat. just let me eat!
and EATING NOISES are like my biggest pet peeve ever.
― Surmounter, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)
Smells offend me more than sounds in regards to others eating.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 3 March 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
I doubt either Princeton or Stanford have table manners as part of their admissions standards. Or their curriculums.
― The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)
i was really rude to a semi-important manager type, who came up to me and tried to make work-related conversation while i was eating my sandwich and reading my book in the lunch room.
i really wanted to react like Bad Santa: "I'm on my fuckin' lunch break, ok?"
yeah i really really hate it.
― rockapads, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 01:23 (seventeen years ago)
I will only talk when I'm eating if there are plates of booze being served.
― brownie, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)
At my last job-job, sales reps would do this and I'd get downright ugly with them. The general manager, I had to pretty much endure it. My immediate supervisor did it once and I asked him if I could clock in before we had the conversation.
Noisy open-mouthed chewers are a horrible blight on humanity. Different food smells are usually pretty interesting.
― Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)
eating fried chicken around members of the same sex
Perfect.
