usually when items like this get reported in the media, it means the person is going to die VERY soon (like in a few days).

Yeah, my grandma had pancreatic cancer. She took a trip to Ireland in August in tip-top health, was diagnosed with the cancer a couple weeks later, and was dead by Christmas.

Patrick Swayze has reportedly started saying goodbye to family and friends after learning his cancer has spread to his liver.
The Dirty Dancing and Ghost star, who in January was told he had pancreatic cancer, has started preparing himself for death, reports say

Anybody who wants to see a really bad movie that happens to capture the pure essence of the Sleazy Side of Swayze can rent "Keeping Mum", starring Mr. Bean and Kristen Scott Thomas.
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 28 November 2008 11:24 (sixteen years ago)
There's a scene where he wears a black thong.
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 28 November 2008 11:25 (sixteen years ago)
Never much liked him as an actor. But god damn this is no way to die. :-(
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 28 November 2008 11:26 (sixteen years ago)
i was in berlin this spring just when the news broke of this first bout of cancer. for the entire time i was there the newspaper front pages and hoardings were full of pictures of patrick swayze with headlines like PATRICK SWAYZE TODKRANK. i couldn't understand all the fuss, especially in local papers, but apparently berliners love swayze because dirty dancing was being shown in german cinemas when the wall came down so it was one of their first tastes of freedom. apparently the film went on to be HUGE amongst east berliners and literally ran for years in the city's cinemas.
― jed_, Friday, 28 November 2008 12:29 (sixteen years ago)
ah shit. i love swayze
― sonderborg, Friday, 28 November 2008 12:32 (sixteen years ago)
As I understand it he kept on smoking after the cancer was diagnosed.
I'm guessing from Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing/Berlin Wall equation etc. that he's probably also pissed off about McCain losing.
― Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 28 November 2008 13:31 (sixteen years ago)
There's no good way to die but I think it's good to have time to say goodbye to your family.
― slag move (onimo), Friday, 28 November 2008 14:00 (sixteen years ago)
Uh, between dying in your sleep and this, I think I would prefer the former, dude.
Yes, he did. But I doubt if he had quit now, it'd have magically disappeared. Smoking is bad for you and does cause cancer, but cut the guy some slack.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 28 November 2008 14:09 (sixteen years ago)
I remember Dennis Potter on TV, swigging from his morphine bottle and puffing away on his cigarettes gleefully ("this lovely little tube of delight" he called it).
Sad that anyone dies of cancer but I'm afraid with the possible exception of his turn in Darko he did little for me as an actor.
― Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 28 November 2008 14:11 (sixteen years ago)
Sympathies to family, friends, and fans of the Dirty Dancing film.

(sorry for bumming out a bummed out thread even more) - knowing people who have woken up next to dead partners, I don't think this is an ideal way out either, particularly for those left behind.
I'm a fully paid up member of the Fuck Cancer Party btw, I just sometimes think it's best to know you're on your way out.

Would you ascribe this trend to the general downward trend of British society since the war, as opposed to pre-war days when British people doffed their caps and showed respect for authority, and children were able to kick a ball in the street without so-called Health And Safety interference?
― Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 28 November 2008 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
Saw that as well. I miss Dennis Potter. :-(

Actor Patrick Swayze has denied US tabloid reports that he is close to death, calling allegations "shoddy and reckless reporting".
The 56-year-old star said reports that he is "on his last legs and saying goodbye to my tearful family" were "lies and false information".
