Bodega-ish grocery store I grew up near supplied me and the neighboorhood kids with cigs and porn over the years....what always fumbled me was how many UK mags they had.....chinese cats ran the store.....Model Directory (yeah!), Knave (yeah!), Blue Birds (gross!)......what I loved about them was the hilarious, friendly, sometimes very polished writing......it was so much more upbeat and chipper than US mags (I love how the "stories" had so many exclamation marks...."my fanny was sopping wet and I knew I'd get a right seeing to!"....you never ever see shit like that stateside)...the fun writing and the weird overbright, non-airbrushed pics gave the mags this quaint, chummy vibe that made it feel like reading comics or something, not something shameful....the girls were a little sketchy in the looks dept at times but I wont hate......so this store closed down a few years back and I miss that UK porn......on the net I came across the totally awesome Poppy Coles but that's about it.....what you know about UK porn?

As you say it appears to have a lot more of a jokey vibe, and as a result seems a lot less sleazy.

best ever porn mags are my '69 [teeheehee] and '70 Australian ones. they were an xmas present, apparently procured from a churce fete.

the basic premise is thus: pretty, homely lasses [one of the cover models has unshaved legs and li'l tummy rolls. wahey!] sitting around in their underwear, next to franky terrible poetry. And the ads are all for mail-order brides and spot-creams.

Britporn humour can be traced back at least as far as eccentric UK smut peddlar Harrison Marks, who made early UK nudist films w/ his 'star' Pamela Green, shot loads of mucky pics for most of the early 'glam' mags, and became one of the first UK bondage/spanking 'auteurs' (he started Janus, the UK's longest-running fetish mag.) Marks in turn took his lead from the 'pioneering' nudie-cuties of American filmmakers like Russ Meyer, Herschell Gordon Lewis and David F. Friedman, adding UK picture postcard humour and the stand-up smut/vulgarity of people like Max Miller and even Benny Hill. As in America, I suspect that the humour was a way of softening the smut, making it seem less like saddo solo masto material and more like good 'healthy' fun. By the late sixties, most of the UK's softcore smut movies were basically 'blue' comedies, and you can spot loads of British comedy 'greats' in the 'Confessions...' series, or David Sullivan's 'Playbirds'. Sullivan's early 70s mags - like 'Playbirds' - were usually at the 'rough' end of the market, and often featured Mary Millington inserting 'foreign' objects into various orifices. These kind of pics were found NOT to be 'obscene' in a mid-seventies court case, but Sullivan still toned down the content of his stroke bks, particularly after Millington died in a sordid overdose scenario (it kind of took the shine off the 'ordinary girl-next-door' image pushed by Sullivan in his jazz mags.)Linzi Drew - who appeared naked on the front cover of 'The Pros and Cons of Hitchiking' by Roger Waters! - 'inherited' Millington's status as UK porn queen, and went on to edit UK Penthouse. She's married to Lindsey Honey aka Ben Dover, the UK's current leading producer of hardcore porn flicks; he bases his act on the work of similarly '(un)funny' US porn king John 'Buttman' Stagliano...

Or so people tell me, anyway...
