Beijing Olympiad 2008

Might as well have a rolling Olympics thread, I suppose. And it's as good a place as any to post this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7286028.stm

The authorities in China say they have foiled two plots; one to crash an airliner, and another targeting the Beijing Olympic Games.

Officials said a plane crew prevented an attempt to crash a flight from Xinjiang province to Beijing on Friday. Two passengers are being questioned.

Another official said a raid that saw two people killed in Xinjiang in January foiled a plot on the Games.

Uighur separatists in Xinjiang have waged an insurgency for many years.

The Chinese authorities accuse them of having links to international terror networks...

BBC China editor Shirong Chen, in Beijing, says the fact both incidents have been mentioned on the same day suggests what may be an orchestrated attempt to justify preventative strikes against suspected terrorists in Xinjiang.

As the Beijing Olympic Games draw closer - they start on 8 August - the Chinese authorities become more concerned about possible terrorist attacks against the games, our correspondent says.

They have deployed more security forces in and around Beijing and have stepped up their fight against "terrorism, separatism and extremism".

I'm absolutely shocked that a Government might hype up the threat of terrorism to justify repression.

I am shocked that this hasn't garnered any opinions. Although I have nothing specific to say at this time.

Symbolic thread boycott due to China's human rights record.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 13 March 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Chinese Internet Hardmen, meet Have Your Say:

China just brushes off the rantings of these so-called human rights activists. We know what you are. Our country has nothing to learn from the West and India. We would be happy to export the Tibetans to you for free and see if you are prepared to give handouts to these people forever. China is for the Chinese people.
To those who say they visited China and then rubbish our Government-why did you come in the first place? You are hypocrits and unwelcome. Stay home.

John Li, Hong Kong

I have a suggestion that, How do you look?
You may come with the Chinese People's Liberation Army to hit a weaponry.
Takes the mouth to shout uselessly,
selects the practical action

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 08:26 (seventeen years ago)

I work near the Embarcadero in San Francisco, and there are a ton of people with anti-China (/pro-Tibet) and pro-China banners. Traffic is snarled. This could potentially end very poorly!

"pro-China banners"

??????????

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

Like most of this country I will happily give up my usual five minutes of going "ooh, archery!" before losing interest and heading out to the pub, if it means showing solidarity to the people of Tibet.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

"pro-China banners"

there are a lot of Chinese immigrants in SF.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

anti-communist fervor not quite what it once was in the Chinese emigre community, evidently.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

"pro-China" protesters were bused in this morning courtesy of the Chinese Govt.

SF immigrants from non-communist Hong Kong outnumber those from PRC 4:1.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

I was wondering about that

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

did you just make that shit up or did Keith Richards tell you that

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha... :-D

just funnin

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

"there are a lot of Chinese immigrants in SF."

If they are immigrants from China, that really doesn't explain why they would be waving pro-China banners. The only people I can imagine waving such a banner would be the board members of Nike and NBC, and whatever other whore corporation is profiting from these games.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

NBC's actually going to lose a bunch of money on this if the Chinese Gov't doesn't allow live broadcasting (as they are threatening)

as for the pro-China stuff, hey I dunno I thought it was kinda odd too - maybe Shasta is right (altho I am uh unfamiliar with this bus route connecting China to SF)

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

It's the 64 Pacific Ocean. It goes through Lincoln Park.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

it'll be easier to boycott this Olympics because of the time difference

blueski, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

pro-China demonstrators were studends bused in from Davis

"I'm proud to be Chinese and I'm outraged because there are so many people who are so ignorant they don't know Tibet is part of China," Yi Che said. "It was and is and will forever be part of China."

wtf lolz. personally, Tibet is pretty far down on the list of completely ffucked up things about Communist China, but I guess the Dali Lama makes for good PR/popular rallying point.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

isn't Davis kinda hard to get into?

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

In what sense?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

by bus?

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

Haha I'm sure the resources of the Chinese gov are quite capable of dealing with little inconveniences like chartering a couple dozen buses.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

China begins to regret decision to hold Olympics in the shittiest air on Earth

I wish I could be a fly on the wall when environmental standards around Beijing go back to "normal" the day after the Olympics end. "That's right, citizens, our air quality may be too poor for the rest of the world - but it's good enough for you. Now get back to work constructing that coal plant!"

Z S, Monday, 28 July 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

Beijing should never have been awarded these games anyway. The IOC and the Chinese government are now getting what they both deserve and will suffer a great deal of embarrassment over the next few weeks with the entire world looking on. The IOC braintrust may have been able to turn a blind eye to gross human rights violations as well as the CCP's blatant disregard for the rule of law, but the pollution is a story that simply isn't going to go away. They can take all the cars off of the road, shut down more factories, build giant fans to produce the winds they so desperately need, or perform rain dances in the middle of Tianamen square. None of it's going to help. I hope none of the athletes suffer too much, but it's simply ridiculous that this is even an issue with the games less than 2 weeks away.

The algae outbreak that threatened the Olympic sailing competition in Qingdao has spread hundreds of kilometres up the coast to popular tourist areas, even as Chinese officials on Friday claimed near-victory over the thick green sludge.

...

Just as the algae problem appears to be worsening, Xinhua news agency said this week pest-killers were trying to prevent a plague of locusts in Inner Mongolia from descending on Beijing – adding to the sense of near-biblical woes afflicting China.

A system of monitoring stations calculates a daily air quality rating on a scale of 1 to 500, with 500 being the worst.

That calibration system sounds like it was adapted from an aborted mission to Venus.

I know some people are hoping that these Games will be disastrous and humiliating for China, but I wonder if anyone else is worrying that such an outcome might result in some post-Olympics belligerence and saber-rattling.

I just saw that trampoline is a sport, then I looked at it on youtube and it's a really cool one! Kind of like diving several times in immediate succession.
