Really not enough info in that trailer. The lack of jokes makes me think that they really don't have enough to go around.

As far as the Downey, Jr.-in-blackface thing, why even do that? There aren't enough dumbassed white actors doing blackface to make a point out of satirizing it.

(I actually haven't seen enough new movies to put money on that last statement, but I would have heard about something like that, right?)

No, it's the bit in the trailer that shows scenes from a fake film called "Simple Jack," where Stiller's sort of 'retarded up' and speaking in a "duh" voice. The idea was obviously to parody the Academy's tendency to reward actors in those types of roles, but I think Stiller and Co. were *really* enjoying making the point!

Disability-issues blogger Patricia Bauer reported this weekend that DreamWorks has agreed to meet with advocates about their concerns over Tropic Thunder and its subplot in which actor Tug Speedman (Ben Stiller) makes a blatant Oscar move in the form of Simple Jack, a movie in which he plays a bucktoothed dolt. We tend to read the subplot as a fairly funny take on I Am Sam, Radio, and other head-slapping movies in which actors ham-handedly portray the developmentally disabled. Then again, we don't have disabled kids, so we're not quite as sensitive to the tagline on Simple Jack's "poster," "Once upon a time … there was a retard." (We do wish they'd used a fake tagline that was actually funny, though.)

Surprisingly, DreamWorks already seems to be acting, since as of this morning, the once-elaborate spoof promotional Website for Simple Jack has totally disappeared.

I need to watch this again. I'm surprised at how many ppl think it was shitty. I mean, it wasn't my favorite movie but I laughed a lot and what more do you want from this kind of thing. Also, I pretty much love RDJ in everything so yeah I thought he was v good.

I loved the RDJ stuff and found the movie overall to be pretty damn likeable but Jack Black just fucking sucks in it, and this is coming from somebody with an unusually high JB tolerance.

Pineapple Express was brought up several times in this thread only because it was the other big comedy opening in August '08, I don't think there's any other basis of comparison. PE isn't really a parody, at least not nearly in as strict a sense as TT.

Pineapple Express was sort of poignant and beautiful in parts. The audience was collectively moved. Seeing it was a good argument for going to the theater instead of watching something at home. Some real Jerome Charyn/Joseph Campbell type shit.

When that came out on video my dad rented it for us and I laughed really hard all the way through, so much that they thought I was fake laughing to annoy them, but they couldn't really call me on it because we were watching a comedy. I knew it wasn't the funniest movie ever, but I laughed like it was. I laughed through 90 percent, probably.
