No beard, but a song.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

this is so lame. they couldn't find a real bearded man??

s1ocki, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

a bearded mario would've certainly been perceived as untrustworthy, but it also would've been an opportunity to confront the audience with their stereotypes about bearded men in general

always loved this guy. didnt know he had parkinsons

WheatusVEVO (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago)

the first time i realized that an actor can dramatically change their accent was when i saw a behind-the-scenes clip for Roger Rabbit as a kid and Hoskins was talking about how "me kids think I've gone loopy" now that he's working with a cartoon bunny.

sad news, dude does great work when given a great role.

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago)

harold bloom's shakespeare book brings up an iago performance of his over and over again. bloom does go on a bit but it must have been good.

goole, Thursday, 9 August 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago)

It is good! Never saw him on stage, but a made-for-TV version was recorded in the 1970s as part of a large BBC (I think) series of productions of the plays -- remember seeing a tape of it in high school English class in the late eighties.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 August 2012 15:53 (twelve years ago)

ach, poor bob

I think this whole thread was created in response to somebody's othello blackface comment somewhere on ilx, who knows

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 9 August 2012 16:08 (twelve years ago)

guess I'll be watching the long good friday this weekend

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 9 August 2012 16:08 (twelve years ago)

Still like him best in what I saw first, Dennis Potter's Pennies from Heaven.

As a duo, he and Fred Gwynne might be the best thing about Coppola's Cotton Club.

Ach. He had a helluva eighties run: The Long Goodbye, Mona Lisa, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The middle entry in particular.

Interviewed in 2012:

Why does he keep on making films? "I don't actually know. I've got flu up to the eyebrows. I didn't need this film at the moment," he says gruffly. He could be sat at home with his feet up. "I could quite happily but there's always someone who rings up and says, 'Now Bob, before you go, there's a cracking little swansong for you'."

Glad the BBC just chose to play a clip from Pennies from Heaven in its news report. Just this morning I discovered that the BFI are having a Dennis Potter season.

Alba, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 13:03 (eleven years ago)

Sad. I interviewed him once and he was awesome. Apparently he used to be a fire breather in the circus.

sorta forgot about The Cotton Club, but loved it as a kid. i recall Ebert etc raved about Bob.

piscesx, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 17:47 (eleven years ago)

in high school I got in a couple fights with my best friend because I mistakenly kept insisting that Bob Hoskins was a yank on account of his accent in "Roger Rabbit."

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 17:57 (eleven years ago)

he's probably the best part of 'the cotton club'. he's got some great scenes w/fred gwynne.

His last good performance I saw was in Felicia's Journey.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:08 (eleven years ago)

he better be, w/ Hopkins as Othello xp

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:09 (eleven years ago)

i had to watch that othello in my college shakespeare class, it's the first memory i really have of seeing any shakespeare performed

now i can't read it without hearing hoskins' 'put money in thy purse'

j., Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

we also watched the Orson Welles "Macbeth" in that class (and just a couple scenes of the Polanski version). we saw some good stuff.

PLATYPUS OF DOOM (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:36 (eleven years ago)

my library has the Othello on DVD, will watch after Pennies & TLGF (which ppl are loading obits with spoilers of!)

I'm not crazy about TLGF but Hoskins and Helen Mirren have terrific rapport

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

same w/ Hoskins and Maggie Smith in Judith Hearne, before she turned into the Brit Ruth Gordon

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:45 (eleven years ago)

Smith's best screen performance.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:47 (eleven years ago)

he also played Churchill, Mussolini, Gepetto and Sancho Panza.

At least one gay blog is full of middle-aged bear commenters detailing their adolescent lust for him.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 20:43 (eleven years ago)

i admit that less than 1/2 way through pennies from heaven i got the point and the rest seemed like dennis potter smacking my skull for hours upon hours. but hoskins is never less than amazing in it.

he did exude a really strong sexuality.

espring (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:28 (eleven years ago)

and yet Pauline Kael apparently meant "a testicle on legs" as a putdown.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 May 2014 02:04 (eleven years ago)

i always thought that was said about De Vito.
