Badges! I love badges. Do you love badges? Or do you hate them, you miserable bastards? What badges do you have? I was going to put this on ILM as music-type badges, but I'm sure people have non-music badges too (keep them seperate, please).

I have [music]:
Mates Of State
The Pattern
The Four Corners
PiL
Prolapse (although it's obscured by a photo-sticker of Scott'n'Pete from The Butterflies)
Bearos Records
Rocket Girl Records

I have [non music]:
Social (which I only wear as it has a nice picture of a jukebox on it)
Anti Nazi League (Yeah! Stick it to the man! I'm a student in the 1980s! Ph34r M3 and all that)

I have [lost]:
The Lucksmiths
Divine
Kraftwerk
Star Of Track & Field/Track & Field Star (eep, going to get lynched)
Big Eyes
Ummm lots more that I can't remember now...

emil.y, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tell me about your badges please. Thank you.

emil.y, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

prolapse! yay!

alix, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't have many badges. the only one i can think of offhand is a Track&Field one with a 1960s person on it. i dont wear it

gareth, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like badges.

On my jacket I have: A badge that says 'I (heart) music' (wahey!)

(It's actually from a website called Trust The DJ that I don't like, but I like the sentiments of the badge)

Anna, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got some badges on Saturday! One is black with white letters on it which say THE CORPO (hooray for the Corpo!!) and the other one is for Jossbag-sans rekkid label SCIENTIFIC LABORATORIES yay! In my badge I haf one of a hedgehog which says 'I've Had The Special Cream' although I think Lixi gave me that one. I have TWO Aislers Set badges, some B*witched badges that I got free from OUR PRICE back in the day, several Belle & Sebastian badges from the Manchester gigs and the Preston gigs (some which need to be sent off to the US...) and probably more I can't think of.

I never wear them as they tend to fall off. Where do you put yr badges?

Sarah, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have one badge. It has Britney on it.

Tom, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Enamel SQUIRTLE & MEOWTH badges, I am 6 Badge, 1959 Badge.

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only people I ever see wearing badges are indie kids. Sheesh.

Emma, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh and a 1960's badge that reads: "FORGET THE REST: FOLLOW THE BEST: SPURS!" I can't remember where it is though :(

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't put badges on my coat anyway. :-(

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didn't give you the special cream badge! Give it back! That badge is my pride and joy. And useful when produced during awkward silences.

alix, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have four badges. A Belle & Sebastian one, two Strangefruit ones (the apple and the strawberry) and a Camera Obscura one.

MarkH, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have always hated badges with a vehemence since a child. It may be something to do with a fear of being pricked and sleeping for a hundred years or something. They make holes in your clothes. Surely this is a bad thing. It shows some sort allegience to something - which I am always wary of. This is possibly the reason why I tend to dislike labeled clothing too (though if anyone is RHUMING tonight I do have a Kngol top on which sez Kangol on it : I know).

Worst badge in the world belongs to Mr Carsmile Steve which is rotten on the bottom and has some sort of mis-shapen badly drawn head on it or something.

Pete, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't wear badges ∴ I am not an indie kid.

N., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I LOVE badges. They rock. Back in my Baxendale-fan days, I was briefly known to Some People as BadgeBoy as I met them whilst buying some badges. That's a crap story isn't it? Anyway, I have tons of badges but here are my faves:
Music Badges:
The Human League (ace 1981 vintage one with the same logo as on the front of Dare)
Pet Shop Boys (ugly mid-80s one)
Soft Cell (early 80s, looks like it came free with Smash Hits)
Gary Numan (slightly crap cheapo one)
David Devant (orange DD + silver cheese grater + "I'm still shiney on the inside" + pic of flying rocket powered pyramid!)
Michael Jackson (with little pic of MJ with BAD written behind him)
Altered Images (c1981)
Pulp (set of four: P, U, L, P - heh heh, the day I bought them, I lost the L but fortunately, I know someone who was going to seem Pulp the next day so they bought me a new set)
Craig David (free with TOTP magazine)
S Club 7 (ditto)
Britney (ditto)
I HEART Pop (ditto)
My Life Story (I think I have about 10 different ones but the Sparkle/Man Ray one is my fave)
Non music badges:
KERPOW! (heh heh "free" from Top Shop)
Jack Nicholson as The Joker
My absolute favouritest badge ever = metal Sherrif's badge which I often wear when I go out (it looks really cool with a suit, though hearing people sing "I shot the sherrif" endlessly gets a wee bit boring)

jamesmichaelward, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Nick it's not that simple. I wear badges, but am not an indie kid.

Anna, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't wear my badges, just have them lying around. Maybe that defines my relationship with indie.

jel --, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have quite a lot though i keep them in a pikachu purse in my room as i am afearde of losing them. my favourite ones are the 2 that feature the girls from the cover of tompaulin's first single, sarah and claudine, and claudine has her pants round her ankles heheh. i wear a little enamel one with the vegan society logo on my coat though.

katie, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anna, not all badge wearers are indiekids but all indiekids are badge wearers.

(I'm not sure this would hold up in court, but it might in a logicians seminar)

N., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i threw what few i'd held on to last october. i had all sorts of embarassing indie kid stuff. jemima puddleduck, Beanish (from Tales of the Beanworld) and a bunch of cheap pop "buttons" (pet shop boys, etc). I sulked for a day when I lost my Watchmen button in 88

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It shows some sort allegience to something - which I am always wary of. This is possibly the reason why I tend to dislike labeled clothing too (though if anyone is RHUMING tonight I do have a Kngol top on which sez Kangol on it : I know).

It does show a sort of allegience but it's one I'm perfectly happy to make (I'd much rather say "I like The Human League" than "I like Kangol")

jamesmichaelward, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a tin of badges somewhere at my mum's. My favourite is 'IS THERE LIFE AFTER THATCHERISM?' with a big skull and crossbones. Either that or the furry Gnasher one.

N., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a badge that says "Come upstairs and listen to my tapes". Unf this has never worked, people just looked at me like I was a nob.

Steve.n., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You did, because you had two! I wondered why you would give me something so precious unless you had ulterior motives towards my person, ahem.

Sarah, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick the fact that you own a TIN OF BADGES marks you out as an indie kid regardless of whether you wear them or not.

Emma, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have many badges from when I was about five. They mostly advertise things like Anchor butter and Fosters and Wagon Wheels. I'm very bad at getting rid of clutter, so they are currently lurking around the house somewhere for "sentimental value" (yeah, I'd be really distraught to lose a badge saying I Love Anchor Butter...). Music badges? Well, I have a Clinic badge and a Prolapse badge, and that's about it, really. Oh, somewhere I have a Sleeper badge which I didn't want but BMG decided to send me along with eight billion Sleeper (argh!), Wannadies (hrm) and Northern Uproar (heh heh) postcards. Unless I threw it away. In theory I like getting badges, but I would only want to wear them when I am all indie-kidded up, when I won't wear badges anyway because I don't want to make holes in my over-priced band t-shirts (oh, mock away, I know, I know...). And my lovely jacket is falling apart fast enough without me sticking pins through it, and I can't find a replacement I like nearly as much. And all the indie badges I get seem to be red and white, which would look stupid aginst most of my clothes. So I don't wear them. But give me more anyway. (I want a Bearos badge! I've given them enough money, after all. *sobs*)

Rebecca, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That did have some line breaks in but lynx is not very good at multi-line forms so it ate them all. Sorry.

Rebecca, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma they were collected between the ages of about 5 and 11. I swear to God, I swear I never even knew what indie was.

N., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My Karol Skandalorum badge from russia is the best ever. I features a fat moustachioed man wearing a skull and crossbones bow tie extolling people to denouce their scandals.

Ambrose to thread.

Ed, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wear my badges on my (aaagh I'm an indie kid) satchel. I used to wear 'em on my jacket but no longer. They do keep falling off, yes, which is why I have a massive list of badges that I _used_ to have. Badges I own which were not mentioned because they are not worn (note: not complete list) are:

Cheggers Says Play Safe (I like this badge but do not wear it as a. it is over-sized and b. people will think I am being oh so ironic)
Nirvana
Out Of My Hair
The Strokes
Kawasaki (this was given to me by someone, I know not who, and I would wear it but the arm thing doesn't seem to want to move. It is all a mystery).

emil.y, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I didn't give you the special cream badge! Give it back! That badge is my pride and joy."

While you're doing that can I please have my B&S one back too, Sarah? The one you borrowed at the Scala(?).

boyofbadges, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is one badge in my room of a smiley face I got somewhere last year sometime, possibly creamfields. I'm never wearing it though.

Ronan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remember the ones of Madness where each badge was a letter in the group's name and a silhouette of a dancing Madness guy? I had a crush on an older neighbour girl who had a complete set on her bookbag. I overheard her telling her friend that Fun Boy Three sucked and I was confused because she had such great taste in badges and I couldn't understand how she didn't like "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum". I had a lot to learn.

fritz, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a bunch of old russian badges with communist slogans that my grandfather got me while he was in russia in the late '70s, but that's about it.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a full set of

Curses

I have a full set of

a full set of email addresses?

Nicole, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Curses, again

I have a full set of Zebraface Badges. A friend drew those.

Ed, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HTML stammering - cool!

N., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SUMMER OF 2000 I BOUGHT A DEVO BADGE IN ASHEVILLE NC AND PUT IT ON MY BACKPACK BUT IT FELL OFF LATER THAT DAY WHILE CLIMBING A LADDER WITH SOME STONERS ON TOP OF A THIRTY STORY PARKING GARAGE AND I CAN ONLY ASSUME IT IS STILL THERE.

ethan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You put them ALL OVER YOUR SATCHEL. Christ, no one here is indie.

I have none. I want a I heart The Gossip one.

Graham, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah so i just saw that you have a four corners badge, what the hell? those things are like vermin here, every record store still has a box of 293 of them with FREE in big magic marker letters on the side, and anyway the band is god-awful.

ethan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have, um, 100 badges. They are kept in a Chococat box.

I feel so dirty right now.

rosemary, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone with a chococat box should be pleased with themself for having good taste.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Erm..as a kid I collected badges and therefore have about 500-600 of them in a shoebox.

Therefore, I probably win King of the Badge Saddoes. I haven't looked at them for ages and don't remember having many band ones. Although I do have a square one of a Molly Hatchett LP sleeve.

mms, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, I think I have an Out Of My Hair badge too, they were on the BMG Britpop Tat mailing list I got signed up to and bombarded with exhortations to pay 20 pounds to join the Northern Uproar Fanclub (!!) by. I think I filled in a questionnaire somewhere and ticked the "I like indie" box and forgot to tick the "I do not like receiving Sleeper adverts" box in small-print at the bottom.

Yessss. It is nearly hometime. Yessssss. (This is the worst keyboard ever.)

rebecca, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Used to cover my old satchel/bag/thing in UCLA and grad school days with badges -- they're probably still on there, if I knew where the bag was. My favorite was 'If I had a hammer, I'd kill all folk singers,' specifically picked up due to my feelings regarding the warbling nonsense a roommate's s.o. created.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

puffin club!!

mark s, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey I have a puffin club one too, and a rail riders one as well.

Ed, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had a puffin club badge too!

Anna, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But which ones makes for the best vibrator?

RickyT, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For fuck's sake, haven't people had enough sly and superior digs at indie kids by now? Sheesh, as someone once said.

me = indiekid, I have some badges, the only ones which are permanently attached to jacket are Strange Fruit pear, because I DJ for them and like the club, and a Stylus badge, because some lovely friends run it and they're sweet and stylish.

I have several Camera Obscura badges, and I have about 4 B&S badges from the original print run. A couple of Pines badges, and a (gasp) gGntle Waves badge. None of which makes me cool, proud or superior. Or inferior, so swallow your smug nietzche shit and wake up to yourselves.

Mark C, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All over my ESPIRIT shoulder bag, I have the following badges: "49% bitch, 51% angel" "I need my caffeine" "Caffeine is cheaper than prozac" "I am loved" "Goddess" "Coffee is life, the rest is just details"

I have a few BAND badges too: Pearl Jam Big Head Todd & the Monsters

Ummmm I lost my Sisters of Mercy badge, WHooPs!

Mandee, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have one. "Wearing Badges is Not Enough"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to have a half dozen badges on my coat, but took them off after too many people were asking me "who the fuck is Stephen Malkmus? well then, who is he?". Of course it's all badges round here nowadays.

I had a Twisted Nerve bunny, a B&S one, the aforementioned SM one, Slumberland Records, Strokes, Fonda, The Jicks, a couple of badges from the 20s that used to belong to my dad... I forget the rest..

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I still have my Mao and Lenin badges (and one of Lenin with Trotsky that I had to stop wearing) somewhere, plus a few punk ones (Ants, Vibrators, Stranglers).

David, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BADGES!!! RAWK!!!!!!!!4

err, yes. i love badges. and stickers. and hairclip things. but mostly badges.

right now i have a The Bangs badge and a The Smugglers badge on my skirt [more because the skirt has wierd stains than a love of those bands, a record player cartoon and a supermarket namebadge on my shirt, a rainbow-and-loveheart broach [sp?] on my jumper [it's cold, ok?], and on my jacket there are:

  • two Bad Badtz Maru badges
  • one Umininn badge
  • six afro ken badges
  • a gloriously misspelt 'Child Psycology' badge which people keep mistaking for something Black Box Recorder-related
  • token rock n roll badges: the Hasslehoff Experiment and the 5 6 7 8s.

ohh, and i found hairbands with more afro ken badges on them! so that makes 8. obsessed? moi?

i had a Ramones badge but i think i got drunk and gave it to this guy. tsk.

    badges are cool.

petra jane, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

  • two Bad Badtz Maru badges

    you ROCK

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have worn some appalling badges in my time:
    circa 12: u2; a union jack.
circa...uh...not telling: lesbo symbol (two venus symbols); green marijuana leaf on yellow.

now that my aversion to "indie" traits and my steadily maintained aversion to "rock" style, i tend to find badges in these veins a big dud. but there are some i like - i have one "the andy warhol look" which i'm very fond of and has teeth bite marks from a pitbull puppy that bit everything from a particularly scary hitch ride i got once so yeah it combines good memories + warhol. also i bought one the other day that's of the zine "laughter and the sound of teacups" which is an account of what this australian person vanessa does on the 23rd of each month [she's also obsessed with badges, actually]. also i like my big dorky badge that has a rainbow and clouds and sayd BOOK IT! i think it might say i love to read as well - i wouldn't wear it but i want to put it in my [imaginary, hoped for] zine library. (or, zine lounge, i haven't decided which is the better or more appropriate title).

i still hope to one day find the transvision vamp badge i had when i was twelve.
also i would like to have ones with animals on them or just nice colours and patterns; or mysterious phrases, or made-up words, and kratwerk ones sound appealing, and roxy music i would definately wear those, and a-ha probably.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i gave my "student helper - liz" one from my public library job days to my friend.

eliabeth anne marjorie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, and i have some i don't want anymore [ciccone youth, swans, and the jesus and mary chain] if anyone wants them

elizabeth anne marjorie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

an irridescent Pope (large) a picture of a mosque with the words SAVE HOLY SHRINES (large) a very big Blondie badge (favourite) "New York Paris and Stalybridge" "England Needs me but I can't get out of bed" A fabulous Status Quo badge

    misterjones, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THASSA thort, I haf several AFRO KEN badges too! And I also haf a Bad Badtz badge! I also haf a CUP with Bad Badtz on which says 'THE BADDEST LITTLE BIRD AROUND' hee hee which I got for ONE QUID down at Toko. I wanna go to Oriental City again!

    Sarah, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

    Mark C has gone bananas.

    N., Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This thread has just brought up a long-repressed sad memory. Joan Jett personally gave me a Joan Jett and The Blackhearts pin . Well, it wasn't exactly a private moment between Joan and me, but she passed a few out to the front row at a show I saw. It was a great button - small and round and perfect: white background, black heart, white block lettering. Proudly pinned it to my jean jacket on the spot, but it was lost (or possibly STOLEN!) by the time I left the club. On the bright side, I still have an official Ricky Byrd guitar pick and you don't.

    fritz, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

does anyone know where i can get a juice crew badge? also the who and philip glass.

    ethan, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

go to a Philip Glass gig and stand in the front row, yell "WOOOOOOO!" and "ALLL RIIIIIGHT!" a lot and raise a lighter during one of the slow ones, and Phil might give you a button and a guitar pick.

    fritz, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also here is what is on my backpack:

'i like to monkey around! 536-7464', white cursive text on red, gotten from a racy ('so when me and my wife are making WHOOPEE...') stand-up comedian that performed at an old folks cafeteria when i was a kid.

'michigan leadership seminar', white and light blue and gold, in the shape of michigan with a white horse and a flag that says FUTURE on it.

tiny dc comics and low yo yo (local wire- ish record store) pins.

big SMILES ARE FREE turquoise button.

four watchmen buttons i got for thirty three cents as a set, 'ego ipse custodes custudio', blood falling over the clock, rorshach's face, and the international radioactive symbol.

a cape-ann tool co SPECIAL POLICE badge (in the american not british sense) with a steelworker guy on it.

some random free pin (phantom menace i think) that i covered up by puting this great two-shot 60s picture of washington dc onto it.

medium white button that says, inexplicably, I MAY HAVE PEAKED TOO EARLY. uh does anyone have an idea what this means or where it came from?

gold star of david with a rainbow of tiny fake jewels on it, subject from a great lecture from my follower-of-farrahkan co-worker on how the jews were not mine but rather his people.

googly eyeball that the googly eyeball guy gave me.

    mr. mxyxtpltlptlk and bat-mite.

    black and white wu-tang w.

    um that's it.

    ethan, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he should smash his piano at the end and throw the keys into the audience.

    ethan, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have one Joan Jett badge, released as promo for her first album. Also a Built To Spill badge that Jimmy gave me.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As pete pointed out, I do have the yuckiest badge ever, which is the b&s bowlie kid one (upside down, natch) which has been on various coats for about 3 years, it is now v rusty and nasty, which i blame entirely on Ally96 for making us stand in the rain in glasgae waiting to get into the 24 hour cafe after his 21st b-day about 2 and a half years ago. I think the scottish acid rain melted it a bit allowing it to go rusty.

when i wore my demin jacket (1990-1995 (constantly)) it always had about 15 badges on, mainly of a political bent, and I also have a large box of badges from when i was a child (150-200 at a guess).

my computer here which looks like a fluffy lion (honest) currently has:
    a flat eric badge
a six by seven "two and a half days in love with you" badge that i got at the end of bowlie that i thought i'd lost
a prolapse "killing the bland" badge
a badlands (chelt. indie record store) badge
    two ricky spontane badges
a girl of the year badge
two carsmile badges (the last two in existance i think)
    two b&s badges
    strange fruit (banana) badge
    strokes badge
    camera obscura badge
    arsenal badge
    knackered UNISON steward badge
    chuckie from rugrats badge
small red cat with wibbly eyes badge

i like badges, but then i am an indie kid...

    CarsmileSteve, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ha ha, thanks Steve you made me laugh. I like the rain when you don't.

Two of the most tragic moments in my life were when I lost both my Carsmile badges. I wuvved them. And I liked that '2 and a half days in love with you' badge until I found out it was Six By Seven.

At the moment I wear a 'ho' badge, a Pines badge and a National Pop League badge. I have lots of others which are in my wallet or in my house somewhere. I quite like them.

    Ally C, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The two best badges I ever had were both lost (the Britney one is cheap and she looks bad on it but as with most crap things its chances of getting lost are zero). One was a Puffin Club badge - they were beautiful. I think it was the most beautifully crafted thing I had ever owned when I got it. The other was a wooden badged made in Finland with a Groke on it.

Did nobody here ever win a Blue Peter badge?

    Tom, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My sister just wrote off and asked for one once and they sent her it.

    N., Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just threw away a backpack which had two badges on it. One was a Panixville badge.

    nathalie, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, i too love badges, but what's this indie kid business?

    badges i have:

    - 4 belle and sebastian (from the summer tour)
    - 2 (or 3?) strange fruit - pear, banana and i think the cherry
    - 1 ringo starr one - i don't really know why i bought this, as i'm not really a beatles fan. but it was nice looking and i think i've only worn it like, twice.
    - 1 jam
    - a "morrissey" one advertising a shop- it's pretty damn ugly so i've never worn it ever, but it was FREE with purchase!

    badges i've lost:

    - 2 or 3 moz/smiths ones- they just fell off somewhere, sadly. or maybe someone stole them
    - probably some other ones i don't remember right now

    badges i want:

    - first run of b&s ones, i kept meaning to buy them from the online shop, but kept putting it off. it didn't occur to me that they would be sold out one day (doh!)
    - camera obscura
    - ballboy
    - field mice
    - elastica
    - more smiths ones!
    - i think i'm leaving some out

i mostly wear badges on TOPS and bags but sometimes also on skirts. i live in constant fear of losing them though. but then what is the point of badges if you don't wear them?

Can I just say that badges are a lovely aspect of indie kidness and that indie kids here should not feel persecuted merely because some people have spotted the palpably obvious correlation between badge- wearing and indieness!

    Tom, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't have any problem with indie kids at all, but badges, well they're just lame.

    I have:

Several National Pop League badges (I'm told it's not cool to wear them *to* the National Pop League - doh)

Various My Legendary Girlfriend badges, with cartoons of band members on them.

And I've got an acid house smiley one kicking about somewhere.

Can anyone please tell me where I can find a Ramones Badge? (preferably just the shape of the eagle). I've looked everywhere and cannot seem to find one.

badges? we don't need no stinkin' badges!

It shows some sort allegience to something - which I am always wary of. This is possibly the reason why I tend to dislike labeled clothing too (though if anyone is RHUMING tonight I do have a Kngol top on which sez Kangol on it : I know).

But I like pleading allegiances! Plus, they're a great conversation starter- I always wear 'em, so that if a like minded person sees me, they can come up to me and say "hey, (band x) rocks!" and wooohooo, instant potential new friend alert!

    Anyway, I own badges by:

    *Johnny Cash

    *The Ramones (sorry, no eagle)

    *The Clash

    *The Smiths

    *The Specials

    *Eddie Chocran

    *Mr.T

I think I only have a few comic ones: a Mxyzptlk, a Bat-Mite and a Raw. Can't remember how I came by them, and haven't worn any in ages.

i have one that says homophobia is gay. it amuses me.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a fair few, but at the moment I have Fake Purr, "Eat Me Out" and Sharky from Eek the Cat on my bag, and Xanadu and the Undertones on my black jersey. The others I have are of various bands and characters and some are pinned to my speakers. I don't like wearing more then two at a time. Please don't call me an indie kid. !

I saw homophobia is gay t-shirts a while ago.

    REVIVE!

I used to collect and horde badges and pins (specifically of the 1" variety, pictured above). I recently collected them all up out of my desk and put them in a big mason jar (simply in the interest of eliminating clutter). The thing I never really understood about them, though, is that they're generally so tiny that in order to be clearly read, one has to get right up close to the wearer. I notcie that the indie/emo kids seem now to be spackling their messenger backs and straps with them. I find myself staring and squinting as they walk by, trying to discern which bands/causes they're espousing. Damn...is this basically a cry for bi-focals?

God, I hate it when threads I started from ~15 years ago are bumped. I'm not even sure my posting style has changed all that much but I find myself deeply annoying.

    The badges I wear now:

    * Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
    * International Harvester Synchromesh & Hydrostatic tractor range (I like mechanical words even/especially when I have no idea what they mean, plus I pretend it's an International Harvester the band badge)
    * Unpop
    * "Keyboardist and woefully misguided Marxist" - a quote about me in a local music paper, sadly the badge has pretty much disintegrated as it's so old
    * Unknown Russian badge

The badge I have been desperate to get for ages but never got round to:

Most of the ones I used to wear have all been lost or given away, but I found these:
