Atlantic City

I couldn't find a thread for this although that seems strange. Hmmmm.

I am going to Atlantic City this weekend and have never been before. I'm hoping it'll be as tacky and trashy as I think it will be. Has anyone been? Any thoughts or words of wisdom?

Also, where else should we drive to on the Jersey shore for a day trip in case AC gets old as quickly as I suspect it might.

The Jersey Shore

what are you expecting? it's really kind of depressing. the casino complexes get old really fast, unless you're a gambler, and the surroundings aren't particularly safe. margate and ventor, the two towns below a.c., are much nicer and better for strolling around.

not sure if this is the right thread or not, but is it true, that they blew up the chicken man in philly last night?

ENBB, I went as someone's guest for a whole weekend but after about 6 hours I thought I was losing my mind (and my soul). Much much MUCH prefer Brigantine Island, which is right off the coast there, connected by bridge. It's sort of seaside summer town/fishing village vibe with occasional outbreaks of luxury condo-itis but it's got super nice beaches on the ocean side and is a lot sleepier and like a place real people live. Too cold for anything but vista-seeing right now I bet but keep it in mind for summer.

I had one of the BEST beach days there, none of the silly pansies with me would go in the pretty rough surf but I couldn't get out...it was probably unsafe but crazy fun.

Hmmmmm - interesting. I LOVE boardwalks and particularly old kind of falling apart ones or creepy deserted ones (see Asbury Park) but my in-laws are coming to visit so we figured we'd go somewhere with more stuff to do and wound up booking a hotel in AC.

Apparently there's a huge outlet ctr in AC now so I guess we'll go shopping and then go visit some of the towns mentioned here and on the other jersey shore thread. I've been to Seaside Heights but never Ocean City or Wildwood so probably one of those two.

ENBB, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

wildwood is great for sightseeing.

lauren, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah. My mom worked at a waffle house on the boardwalk in Wildwood while she was in college in the '60s and her best friend from then still lives in WW and owns a motel there. I've always wanted to visit so this is probably a good chance.

Hi, I'm playing poker in a biggish tournament in AC on New Year's Day. Anybody ever do this? Anybody have any tips?

Place used to be pretty damn magnificent before white flight and the collapse of the northeast resort industry (thanks to cheap air travel to Florida etc) rotted the economy and brought on the casinos.

thomp, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

sorry, i was kinda just replying to the thread in general, good luck with your tournament though!

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, not just AC but lots of the Jersey Shore and the Catskills were pretty grand before air travel. Even Coney Island: http://www.westland.net/coneyisland/mapsdocs/images/dr-topchutes.jpg

nine years pass...

idk where else to put this: today my therapist remarked, "Everything dies, (my name), that's a fact" and my eyes immediately started leaking bc Bruce/Atlantic City but also bc it's true

Aw. I won't joke, but I'd seriously be tempted to start the next session by saying last night you met this guy and you're going to do a little favour for him

feel better

maffew12, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 16:33 (five years ago)
