irish coffee: C or D?

coffee thread reminded me that "irish" coffee is the only kind of coffee i drink. is this mostly an american deal, any brits or europeans drink this? Destroy the places that serve this with whipped cream, it's not fucking dessert. i love how the hot coffee/whiskey part has to pass thru the cool heavy cream, interesting sensation on the lips/tongue.

This reminds me: I once drunkenly attempted to explain to an Irish barkeep what a "car bomb" consisted of. In the midst of saying somthing like "well, you mix the Jameson and the Bailey's.." he gave me a look that assured me that I'd best keep to my Yank self.

I like, but as I don't have Irish whiskey at home I guess I'm actually drinking Scottish coffee.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 14 March 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

I rather like the italian interpretation of this. any coffee with spirits in it is 'correct'

Ed, Friday, 14 March 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

i'm more partial to a hot whiskey myself.

darraghmac, Friday, 14 March 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

espresso with grappa in rules all I think.

Ed, Friday, 14 March 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

Yep it's not dessert, but sometimes it's better than dessert. And it makes you feel soph-is-ti-caaa-ted.

Fook tha cahfee. G' me the whiskey. Oill split the difference with ye.

I really hate any time on St. Patrick's Day after 10am. The real celebrators understand that you go out, have a pint, and then get on with your day. This whole get drunk all fucking day long listening to Irish Drinking Songs while wearing green and paying $7 for a plastic cup of Guinness? Right. No thank ye.

St. Patricks day is the fucking worst in NYC. I made the mistake of taking a bus back to JERZ to see my parents last year right after the parade; the 20 mile ride took 4 hours thanks to various fistfights, police interventions, public urination, and projectile vomiting. also plenty of "fuck the jews" "fuck you nigger" and "go back fucking home you sand nigger" (to some guy who was obviously of south asian descent)

i love irish coffee. i had some great ones at bed and breakfasts across ireland.

never go out on st patrick's day. i always just throw a party for about thirty people at my place and we drink and enjoy guinness cheese dip and the like.

Omar,

1. Where do you live?

2. Can I come to this Guinness Cheese Dip fiesta? I will make Guinness Pot Roast, and we can all enjoy the fact that we're not at a bar, being thrown up on.

i live in lol angeles but i had my party this past saturday to account for several friends being out of town this weekend, so for the official st pat's weekend i'm gonna stay in with my girlfriend and drink the leftover irish beer and have irish coffee and watch some movies. what is guinness pot roast o_O

I've never had any trouble on St Patrick's Day. Even when I lived round the corner from an O'Neills.

If I haven't got any whisk(e)y sometimes I make Irish coffee with Baileys and don't add any milk, that's quite nice. The best use for Baileys anyway.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 15 March 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

a good irish coffee on a cold day = A-plus.

your average american "irish pub" though just gives you old shitty coffee with well whiskey, heaps of sugar and spray-can whipped cream. ugh.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 15 March 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

I've never bought Irish coffee in a pub, that would be weird.

Last time I went to the US, my mother-in-law insisted on putting some disgusting "Irish Coffee" mix in my coffee every morning, I wouldn't have minded but there wasn't even any booze in it! Evemtually I just declined any coffee and made it myself. Being waited on is a bitch.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 15 March 2008 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

whipped cream, ugh, i've had that in irish coffee before too. you gotta pour heavy cream over the back of a spoon.

omar little, Saturday, 15 March 2008 01:01 (seventeen years ago)

Surprisingly classic @ the Buena Vista in San Francisco. Somewhat dud everywhere else.
