And is there anyway to stay there without completely going broke?

I was there briefly a few weeks ago - just for a day trip. We spent most of our time in the Cinque Terre. It was still off-season then, but it seemed unbelievably swank: Gucci and Rolex stores etc just yards from the beach...

Might be cheaper to stay in Santa Margherita?

yeah most of the results on orbitz are in St Margherita, but since I won't have a car I'm not sure convenient that would be. The side question is it worth going on your own to Portofino?

It's a very pleasant walk along the coast from Santa M to Portofino - takes a couple of hours. There are also regular buses - two or three an hour I think?
To be honest, I only spent an afternoon there but I got bad vibes from the place - it seemed like an extremely swish shopping resort, with some extremely snooty people. Had much more fun walking the hills between Levanto->Monterosso->Vernazza etc...

yes - i see what you mean. I once went on my own to Capri in winter, which was pretty similar, but I kind of enjoyed the weird off-season atmosphere. My own 'Death in Venice' in a way
