I dunno shit about the subject, but I've been convinced to get one. Which one, tho? Some folks say that the cheapos are just as good as the TV's built-in scaler. I don't really want to drop a ton on this.

philips 5960

That looks intersting but I wonder if I'd miss lack of audio out if I hook up a stereo to the TV later.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

it does have audio out!

s1ocki, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

The reviews say that audio out is disabled if you use HDMI, tho.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

The audio *in* the HDMI is what is disabled IIRC. I use a digital coax hookup to my receiver

I picked up the Oppo 980H, which isn't even their top of the line model. The difference in picture quality is amazing, especially with PAL discs.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

2nd rec I have heard for the Oppo.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

Am I wrong in surmising that the Oppo upscales to 1080p and the Phillips only 1080i?

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say, if you don't care about PAL conversion, then you might just look into a PS3 which both upscales DVDs and plays Blu-Ray (and GT5 etc).

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting point. Any mod chips for PS3 yet?

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure, might it enable PAL conversion??

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Any HDTV that isn't shit should do PAL.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

The Playstation 3 is like 4 times the cost of a DVD player!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

Right, well, I might possibly play a game once in awhile even though games are totally stupid.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

I am so easy to upsell.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Mod chips are for letting yr unit play pirated games, I believe.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I want to get a modded dreamcast and play torrented warez

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

I want to get a modded dreamcast and play torrented warez

Most of the DC warez stuff was pre-hacked to fit on a normal cd and made bootable, although the earlier ones you just used a boot disc to get to work.

It's not HDTV's that do PAL, but rather in the US, a DVD player must actually be able to convert it. Very few players here have this capability.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
