Potentially both, if you do it right.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

pretentious on men, fine for women

jergïns, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, why not just wear a fucking ski coat to every occasion? Because you look like a 12-year-old, that's why.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

it's like sunglasses indoors

blueski, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

you were all probably better as 12 year olds

my mom got me a scarf on some trip she took but its like 80 fucking degrees outside and this is texas so it will be 80 fucking degrees outside until 5 minutes from now when it is 8 fucking degrees outside

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

I wear scarves half of the year in SF. The weather is changeable and being able to doff a cap or knot a scarf is often the difference between being comfortable or not. What right-minded adult gives a flying fuck whether that's pretentious?

Michael White, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

american men really don't do scarves, it's weird

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

neurotic ones who start polls on message boards to help them make fashion decisions

xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

12-year-old-ness aside, I often find that a lot of the bulky warmth of some winter coats is unnecessary on most days when a lighter coat is fine as long as you have the scarf.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

this does always strike me as pretentious tbh; i mean it is an affectation right?? who the fuck ever says "man my neck is freezing right now"?

you guys are mental

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

i hear you old bean. the weather down here in palo alto is so damnably fickle!! thank god i've got this indie scarf and porkpie hat to keep me comfortable.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but jon a scarf isn't even a thought in yr neck of the woods where its cold as shit on a reg basis. it's cold here irreg and GOD WHY AM I DEFENDING MY LACK OF FASHION CONFIDENCE

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

you try living in canada without one, smart guys

What are you afraid of looking pretentious for? Are your dockworker buddies going to give you a hard time about it or something?

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

i never knew scarves were so controversial

DG, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Scarves are good for skateboarding/biking in chilly weather

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

I am an owner of many scarves and have never once considered it was them that made me pretentious.

Ed, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know how scarves work. somehow i've made through 24 years in wisconsin without one.

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm what to wear for a windy day bike ride through the mission. i know, my homemade denim capri pants and an AA deep v-neck t-shirt. and saucony shoes, and a porkpie hat balanced on my noggin at a jaunty angle. hmmmm, i'll have to keep warm though. better grab this 6-foot-long stripy wool scarf, else i look like a tool w/ a cold neck.

xps lol

gff, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

i have honestly never, ever been outside & thought "really wish i had a scarf right now".

but then i admittedly do dress exactly the same as i did when i was 12, complete with shamelessly pulling my hood up over my head & tying the string tight when its especially cold & windy.

ty jordan, these people are all fuckwits man

deeznuts, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Really, deeznuts?

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

"man my neck is freezing right now"?

Huh? Two carotid arteries just under the skin = great way to lose heat.

12-year-old-ness aside, I often find that a lot of the bulky warmth of some winter coats is unnecessary on most days when a lighter coat is fine as long as you have the scarf.

Men wearing scarves indoors - classic or dud?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Outdoors - classic
Indoors - dud

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

what the hell can't you just let guys wear a scarf, why is ilx always so damn black n white, burn the scarf wearers/ice cream eaters/car shouters?

many xposts

ledge, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Scarves are for people who can't 1. grow beards, 2. wear functional, sensibly-designed cold weather clothing, or (mostly) 3. are w/o sisu.

dan m, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

but a tshirt is like saying "its warm enough in here to wear just a tshirt", and the scarf contradicts that by saying "im cold, specifically around my neck". therefore the whole ensemble speaks thus "i am an contradictory* idiot"

i took great care to wear long sleeves today

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

the only pain is when it's fkn freezing out, you go to a restaurant or to a movie and you gotta deal with taking off and putting on your coat, your scarf, your fucking hat, gloves. too much equipment after a while

gff, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, literally - tshirt, sneakers, jeans, sweatshirts, nike winter coat from goodwill. the only real response or thought i give to fashion of any kind is i hate loud/primary colored shirts. and scarves, apparently.

ive never felt awkward about this, ive always regarded it as typical. i think i dress better than some frankly.

haha wait there are people who go around in tshirts + scarves??

deeznuts, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

scarves are functional, sensibly-designed cold weather clothing wtf

gff, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

The real question is why one should care, though. If moonship journey to baja's Palo Alto porkpie and scarf crew are insufferable, they would be even if the fashion changed, and if Jordan and deeznuts have found ways to be comfortable without dressing exactly like me, I most certainly won't gainsay their personal sartorial choices.

with taking off and putting on your coat, your scarf, your fucking hat, gloves. too much equipment after a while

Put gloves and hat in pockets of coat: 12 seconds

Pull coat and scarf off together: 4 seconds

Hang on peg/drape over back of chair: 10 seconds (tops)

!!!

i should really talk, though, i wear a tie almost every day

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

it's more of a space thing, in movie theaters and crowds etc. plus i have to do this whole arm flap shoulder hunch thing to get it all settled right, that takes a lot of space. fuck winter, basically.

gff, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

women are so gay

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't even think about wearing a scarf, as this was my first winter in a cold environment in the last five years. But when I think about all those times walking to work thinking about how my whole body was warm except my face - yeah, I'll have to get a scarf next year.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

dudes seriously need to quit rocking the tee/sportcoat thing

deej, Thursday, 20 March 2008 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

I get the part about not wanting to be called a homo by a stage actor's award, but baby kangaroos? Baby kangaroos, stanton???

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 20 March 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Can we compare scarves now?

Deej's scarf sounds verr niiice.

My favorite scarf this winter has been the black one -- just black, nothing precious. (Unless of course you think wearing a scarf at all is precious, etc etc.) Like more than a couple of my favorite articles of clothing, it was a gift from ms. jules, who seems to know what she's doing when she buys men's clothes.

Look! A picture! IIRC, every visible piece of clothing in this picture was a result of her laser-guided internet shopping. :)

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i191/fluxion23/scarfing.jpg

My other fave scarf is kind of a sky blue, nice and bright -- it really pops out of a dour grey-and-black-and-necessary winter getup.

kenan, Thursday, 20 March 2008 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

kingkong, scarves do not protect much against yr face; the cold you felt was likely to extremities such as ears & nose; youd be much better off wearing a ski-mask. or a hood.

burt stanton, you are exactly the kind of asshole you are railing against but in reverse.

whoa 80 people voted. The only cold neck should be on a beer.

brownie, Friday, 21 March 2008 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

You lose 80% of your heat through your head and neck.

That's so awesome! For centuries we've been wearing most of our clothes on the wrong part of our body! FUCK ME, tomorrow I am tying my jeans around my neck and my coat around my head. The rest I will neglect clothing cause I don't lose my heat there anyway!

I'm now knitting the Irish Hiking Scarf. It's totally awesome. In a Katia Mexico yarn. It'll probably be neglected cause I don't wear orange/red/pink stuff anyway. :-( But I'll have at least done a cable scarf!!!

I'm also gonna do a scarf in brioche stitch. Awesome stitch cause it's quick and bulky.

That said, knitting scarves can be extremely tedious. :-( Unless I can watch telly whilst doing it.

stevienixed, Friday, 21 March 2008 21:06 (eighteen years ago)
