Most popularly known as The Black Guy on Hogan's Heroes, he starred in the 1964 film Nothing But a Man, played in A Raisin in the Sun on stage and screen, and directed The Spook Who Sat by the Door (and then a ton of TV incl The Rockford Files).

The Spook Who Sat by the Door is a pretty politically rad (as in Panther) film -- score by Herbie Hancock! mostly shot in Gary, IN standing for Chicago (tho they steal some El shots).
