Britney Spears: Big Cokehead or Insane?

Yeah, somebody explain this outfit to me without using the words "big cokehead" or "mentally unfit" and I will be proud.

Ally, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe she's going New Romantic.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fox hunt couture.

jess, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She could've cycled to the press conference..

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is it wrong to say that I initially read the poster behind her as saying, slightly cut off, "Girl Choads"?

(Further proof I am Dan, this.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My analysis:
- The hat is fine.
- The sweater is fine.
- The pants are odd but fine.
- The boots are ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVABLE and merit stoning.
- The combined effect of hat, sweater and pants worn as a single outfit is akin to the sensation of an elderly woman's skull yielding to the blunt solidity of a mugger's bat.
- Really, I can't say enough horrible things about those boots. Why are there SOCKS on them?
My conclusion: Britney's stylist really, REALLY hates her.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(It has occurred to me that the boots might be suede, but they're still so ugly that they make me want to slap Britney's mama.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

explain this without using the words 'we're all going to be dying from the nuclear fallout sometime in the next the six months'.

ethan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, what's wrong with a superstar getting in touch with her one-eighth Native American roots?

Curt, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Eighth-Breed", the new disco single from Brit!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did you guys read the caption?? It says Britney's considering coming out with a line of clothes!!

Sean, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For a virgin, she sure has trouble saying no.

Curt, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did you guys read the caption??

I was going to comment on that, but every time I sat down to type, I got flashbacks of those boots.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are those socks-outside-the-boots Britney's attempt to start a risque, Maddy-type underwear-on-the-outside fashion craze?

Curt, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's vaguely better than socks on the elbows.

Ally, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pants in socks in boots is a poorly conceived attempt to distract from the fact that she has no legs to speak of. She should stick with the exposed navel.

dan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw them as toeless outer-socks. a bit like spats. They are awful in that colour, but maybe in black...

Mark C, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

... they would look stupid rather than hideous.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was hoping she'd go further with the sock-on-elbow look. Like she could wear spangled sheer silk ones for fancy dress occasions. I think she's obsessed with socks!!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Much like Dan, I am now finding everytime I close my eyes I think of the boots. I will soon gouge my eyes out.

Mandee, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Then everyone would think she was a junkie, Tracer, like Johnny Thunders.

Anyway, that outfit looks like the work of my old friends Kurt and Bart. Aren't those just legwarmers on her boots? Bonkers. I like that rank earth tones color scheme--olive drab and muddy brown. Don't like the hat, though, it's too Alicia Keys.

Arthur, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

People could start calling her "The Socked One."

Or just "Socko."

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My supervisor spent his formative years in some snowy part of Canada and he wears thick socks over his shoes to keep from skidding on icy surfaces when there's a frost. Maybe Britney was worried about falling over?

isadora, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Photo is taken in Germany. Britney is wearing "fashion interpretation" of the national costume. Then she's off for a sausage.

AP, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer, when I watched WWF in the period that The Rock and Mankind had a big feud going, I had this idea.....you know how Rock's signature move is called Rock Bottom? it's like grabbing the guy's neck with forearm and slamming......Mankind aka Mick Foley had his sock puppet "Socko" that he'd just dig into muthafiggles' mouth as his super move......I got to thinking, WHY DOESN'T MICK FLIP THE SCRIPT AND USE THE "ROCK BOTTOM" ON ROCK, EXCEPT SLAM THE GUY WITH THE SOCK IN THE MOUTH INSTEAD OF FOREARM AROUND NECK, AND CALL IT 'SOCK-BOTTOM'?????.......it was so clever and obvious.....we waited for WWF to write it into the script....how couldn't they?....they didn't....I contemplating writing a letter but I lost faith in writing letters to companies since the first time I tried.....that was when the Kraft Handi-Snax had the Sega Genesis contest, you just sent in a postcard or whatever, but I, thinking that they read every one closely, wrote this long, beautifully cursive-handwritten, sycophantic letter talking about how I ate Handi Snax at recess and after school everyday and if I had a Genesis to play after school while I ate my Handi Snax, all my friends would come over and eat Handi Snax too.....do you have any idea how beautiful my cursive was as a kid?.....my teachers would fawn over my fearless, unconventional D's.....I used to dot my i's with the hollow circle instead of a dot but my friends said 'that's for bitches!'

Ramosi, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Could Spears be the next star to come out with a clothing line?"

Good God, I hope not.

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You all seem suprised this but has Britney ever had good taste in fashion??? Memories of Britney dancing around in the "I'm a slave 4 u" film clip with what looks like a red g string over the top of her jeans comes to mind.

Penny Lane, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think its a red g string (in that video) I decided it was a scarf tied kind of like a nappy around her 'waist'. I don't understand why though.

isadora, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

britney *snort-gasp* clothing line *snort-gasp*

ducklingmonster, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isadora - I think you might be right, but whatever it is it's certainly not a look that I'll be adopting in the near future.

Penny Lane, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no wonder people in la are throwing buckets of urine at her

Queen G, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think she looks nice.

N., Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's nothing wrong with being obsessed with socks. Mmmm I got some red and white over knee STRIPEY ones yesterday QUELLE TASTY!

Sarah, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think she is an insane cokehead. though i think N. is also insane (but not a cokehead) :)

katie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely it is not Britney who is the insane cokehead but her stylist?

Emma, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like the idea of a Britney clothes line. you'd need Britney clothes pegs too, ARF!

Alan T, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh come on Emma if YOUR stylist said to YOU "ooh here's something lovely why don't you prance around in front of millions of people in that" and then handed you that, you'd tell him/her to shove it up their unmentionables! is Bwitney not a big girl now who can make her own fashion decisions? or has she been too *SNORT* overprotected?

katie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ps. Sorry Emma, it's just that I. HATE. BRITNEY. SO. MUCH.

katie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Katie ALL (well most) of the stars have stylists, it doesn't matter how old they are, they don't pick out their own award ceremony frocks, they get someone else to do it for them. Besides, we've all made fashion mistakes, just most of us are lucky enough not to make them in front of the world's media (mmm, my electric blue leggings with polka dots...)

Emma, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah but this is the girl who went mental at someone when a mistake was made, threw a huge tantrum and called them "retards" (i believe her mic set was still switched off at the time). surely she should just throw a dive hissy fit and say something along the lines of "this outfit is a pile of shit, you expect me to wear this? go get me something by Prada, RETARD!"

n.b. i am not in any way saying it's OK to call someone a retard.

katie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah but the outfit probably is by some big fancy designer, if the stylist says 'hey Brit this guy is the next big thing, he's rilly rilly cool' she's going to say 'oh alright then what the heck'.

Plus I really don't think the outfit is THAT bad. I've seen her wearing worse. The worst thing about her look lately is the way the make up is trowelled on and her hair is in such bad condition - she's a young girl for god's sake not a 50 year old drag queen (no offence to drag queens intended).

Emma, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the thing is though that she probably loves it and thinks she looks like the bippity bomb. hence = insane and prob. on coke!

katie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She looks like a fawn! But a pretty fawn nonetheless.

Jonnie, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm speechless.

Nicole, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It kinda looks like one of those lederhosen outfits, just a bit flashier.

Evangeline, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like her Trilby

Graham, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually I don't. And I was about to defend the rest of her outfit, but...

GAH. What a mess.

Graham, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm picturing Britney cruising down the highway at 88mph with a baby on her lap trying to get back to 1998 so she can meet her former self like, "BEWARE!".

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 7 August 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

might have been on the bus HUH might have been on the bus HUH??!!!

was she talking about the movie 'spun'? that might be more appropriate.

Hahaha good point, now that I think of it. Spun came out in 2002 and Spawn came out in 1997. I don't see how she could have thought Spawn was still in theaters.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 7 August 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, watched it again. It's definitely "When did Spun come out? I wanna see that!" once you factor in the accent.

Just came across this, might as well put it here:
