Spottie Dottie is all about wearing pearls and bows and wearing makeup. A bit too Barbie for me. Not that Hello Kitty is little miss superbutch in comparison, but she does other stuff besides tea parties. Spottie Dottie tries too hard to be femme. And perhaps this is cruel, but also Spottie Dottie is just damn ugly.
The little twin stars I don't like just because they remind me of precious moments crap.
Now my all time favorite Sanrio character would have to be Keroppi's father. Seen on a couple of episodes of the Sanrio cartoons, Keroppi's father looks a lot like Serge Gainsbourg has something like 200 children. The frog is a true bon vivant and player and for that I have to salute him. I have never seen any Keroppi's father merchandise, but I have been thinking one day I should buy a Keroppi and dress him up to look like his dad.

A new phrase of the year winner!
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Apart from Badtz though, all my favourites are from the SAN-X company. to wit:
AFRO KEN: he's a dog with George Clinton hair and transmogrifying abilities [including trees, clouds, sheep, a nice foamy glass of beer...basically anything fluffy...as well as the Mr T, Bootsy, Olivia Newton-John and Morrissey looks].
MOMOPANDA: born from a peach. has turtle friends who try to buy her[?] affection with more peaches, and a baby sister called KOMOMOPANDA [baby momopanda].
MASHIMARO: he's sorta the new Hello Kitty, already huge in the teenage girl market here. cellphone covers and, strangely, car accessories [mirror, steering wheel and seatbelt covers] abound. Mashimaro is a marshmallow bunny on the run from the law, pausing for occasional toilet breaks and cigarettes. you think i'd make this stuff up??!
BEER-CHAN: small, yellow, bloblike. drinks like a fish.
STAR CUTIE: another panda. this one's obsessed with american 80s culture. and judging from the engrish A>-stylez sloganry "American Stars And Panda", i suspect also a Neil Young fan. his number one hobby is drinking paings [sic] of beer under Flamingo lighting, whatever that is. and my personal alltime favourite of all time, KOGEPAN: he's a red bean paste bun, which = YUM. Kogepan got burnt so now he's surly, sulky and cynical. has a costant cloud of soot above his head, which isn't helped any by the number of cigarettes he smokes. his catchphrase apparently translates as "you will dump me anyway". Kogepan sometimes tries to liberate [i.e. steal] the other loaves from his bakery home, run away, "get didactic" with the cheery unburnt loaves, or get drunk on milk. Kogepan is my soulmate. here endeth the lesson.― petra jane, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chococat and nyago are cool. and kerroppi. i once found a kerroppi beachball with blowup kerroppi inside. had great fun presenting my friend with this blow-up toy.
what's the oddest licencing you've seen? for me it's the mashimaro steering wheel covers and afro ken bathroom scales.

What is the cutoff date for liking SanrioBecause I am thinking of knitting a cute Pompom Purin!
― offee is for losers only, do you not c? (Abbbottt), Saturday, 30 April 2011 23:50 (fifteen years ago)
I guess if knitted toys is my idea of good house decor then I'm irredeemable.
Also I can't believe Nicole doesn't like little twin stars – top five Sanrio imo!

I never got the little twin starts either. I was big into Keroppi when I was younger. I still have a Keroppi checkbook cover that must be at least 15 years old.

When I moved here I suddenly had access to all these weird little underground stores and malls in Chinatown full of real and knock-off stuff that was all adorable, stores and stores full of wallets and tiny bento boxes and barrettes and absolute Sanrio madness. I was really into Chococat for a while, because it had graphic designs and simple colors and never involved pink.

Sanrio World Smash Ball! for SuperFamicom is surprisingly really fun and addicting (also put out by APE who released EarthBound). The pace can get ridiculously fast after a bit.

Look at how cute this Pompom pattern is:

how can I not make this, guys?
I have a Landry washcloth somewhere.
There are good non-Sanrio characters, too -- like those little steamed buns that are sometimes burned??

Yes! When I transfered to NYU my dorm was on the corner of Broome and Mulberry so I was like mins away from Chinatown and all that stuff. I was so into it for a while there.
This thread made me go to the Sanrio page where it has facts about all the characters. I sort of love the one about this PomPom fellow:
