Crazy Japanese cartoony characters that grace all sorts of product from badges (yay!) to toasters and guitars. Who's yer fave? Do you think your favourite character reflects your personality?

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love BAD BADTZ MARU and I have cups and stickers and notebooks with his face on. Yay

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now look what you've done, Nicole will be up all night composing her reply!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is Kogepan from Sanrio? I like Afro Ken.

Last night I kept thinking "Electric Sound of Jim" - where have I heard that before? HUZZAH! NOW I SEE! Jim, you are keeping me up at night. Forget Sanrio, I want a badge with your face on it.

I like Badtz Maru's permanent bad mood. I find Angel Hello Kitty a bit disturbing; if she's an angel does that mean she died?

rosemary, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mikey D! did you ever go back and get that terminally cute headrest from Elizabeth Center?

I only know Hello Kitty. She said I was a good person.

jel --, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's easier to answer this question by naming the only Sanrio characters I don't like and/or collect: the little Twin Stars and Spottie Dottie.

Spottie Dottie is all about wearing pearls and bows and wearing makeup. A bit too Barbie for me. Not that Hello Kitty is little miss superbutch in comparison, but she does other stuff besides tea parties. Spottie Dottie tries too hard to be femme. And perhaps this is cruel, but also Spottie Dottie is just damn ugly.

The little twin stars I don't like just because they remind me of precious moments crap.

Now my all time favorite Sanrio character would have to be Keroppi's father. Seen on a couple of episodes of the Sanrio cartoons, Keroppi's father looks a lot like Serge Gainsbourg has something like 200 children. The frog is a true bon vivant and player and for that I have to salute him. I have never seen any Keroppi's father merchandise, but I have been thinking one day I should buy a Keroppi and dress him up to look like his dad.

Nicole, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not that Hello Kitty is little miss superbutch

A new phrase of the year winner!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sanrio's Bad Badtz Maru is kinda cool - he's so cute and hellbent on world domination through rock n roll, what's not to love?

Apart from Badtz though, all my favourites are from the SAN-X company. to wit:

AFRO KEN: he's a dog with George Clinton hair and transmogrifying abilities [including trees, clouds, sheep, a nice foamy glass of beer...basically anything fluffy...as well as the Mr T, Bootsy, Olivia Newton-John and Morrissey looks].

MOMOPANDA: born from a peach. has turtle friends who try to buy her[?] affection with more peaches, and a baby sister called KOMOMOPANDA [baby momopanda].

MASHIMARO: he's sorta the new Hello Kitty, already huge in the teenage girl market here. cellphone covers and, strangely, car accessories [mirror, steering wheel and seatbelt covers] abound. Mashimaro is a marshmallow bunny on the run from the law, pausing for occasional toilet breaks and cigarettes. you think i'd make this stuff up??!

BEER-CHAN: small, yellow, bloblike. drinks like a fish.

STAR CUTIE: another panda. this one's obsessed with american 80s culture. and judging from the engrish-stylez sloganry "American Stars And Panda", i suspect also a Neil Young fan. his number one hobby is drinking paings [sic] of beer under Flamingo lighting, whatever that is.

and my personal alltime favourite of all time, KOGEPAN: he's a red bean paste bun, which = YUM. Kogepan got burnt so now he's surly, sulky and cynical. has a costant cloud of soot above his head, which isn't helped any by the number of cigarettes he smokes. his catchphrase apparently translates as "you will dump me anyway". Kogepan sometimes tries to liberate [i.e. steal] the other loaves from his bakery home, run away, "get didactic" with the cheery unburnt loaves, or get drunk on milk. Kogepan is my soulmate.

here endeth the lesson.

it's official, the innernet hates me.

chococat and nyago are cool. and kerroppi. i once found a kerroppi beachball with blowup kerroppi inside. had great fun presenting my friend with this blow-up toy.

what's the oddest licencing you've seen? for me it's the mashimaro steering wheel covers and afro ken bathroom scales.

petra jane, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they've got badtz-maru condoms and cigarettes in japan, apparently.

Okay, this question is for Tracer: CAN YOU THINK OF A MORE APPROPRIATE GIFT FOR RAMON THAN BADTZ MARU CIGARETTES? I didn't think you could. Hot damn. It's a penguin. It's really angry. AND YOU SMOKE IT.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Why has noone on this thread mentioned one of the newer Sanrio characters, Puchi Puchi Wanko?

(he likes to eat strawberries, apparently. That's all I can remember.)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Puchi Puchi WANKO?! You made him up.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

He is for real, though I haven't found any Puchi Puchi Wanko stuff at the usual places I find Sanrio stuff. If Ned could find any Puchi Puchi Wanko stuff at the big old Sanrio store I would reimburse him! It would be classic.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Puchi Puchi Wanko

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you guys realize the implications of the names Puchi Puchi Wanko? This is the greatest thing that ever occurred.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, that was why I was surprised noone had mentioned him already

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a new guy, I think.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Either that or a character that has been long discontinued.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder how many bongs across the Earth are adorned with Sanrio stickers? I personally know of 3.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say the URL I posted implies he's new.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh! I didn't even look at the url.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, he's adorable but what on earth does "Puchi Puchi Wanko" imply? I think the Sanrio people are having sport at the expense of children and twee adults.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Wanko is just a fabulous name, if it weren't for the name he would just be one of the meh Sanrio characters.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The tan Hello Kitty is pretty wrong.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

There are many variations on the tan Hello Kitty, from very lightly tanned to a dark chocolate brown. And that's not even getting into the occasions where Sanrio will make pink or purple Hello Kitty, etc.

Because I am thinking of knitting a cute Pompom Purin!

Also I can't believe Nicole doesn't like little twin stars – top five Sanrio imo!

I never got the little twin starts either. I was big into Keroppi when I was younger. I still have a Keroppi checkbook cover that must be at least 15 years old.

When I moved here I suddenly had access to all these weird little underground stores and malls in Chinatown full of real and knock-off stuff that was all adorable, stores and stores full of wallets and tiny bento boxes and barrettes and absolute Sanrio madness. I was really into Chococat for a while, because it had graphic designs and simple colors and never involved pink.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Sunday, 1 May 2011 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

Sanrio World Smash Ball! for SuperFamicom is surprisingly really fun and addicting (also put out by APE who released EarthBound). The pace can get ridiculously fast after a bit.

I have a Landry washcloth somewhere.

There are good non-Sanrio characters, too -- like those little steamed buns that are sometimes burned??

Yes! When I transfered to NYU my dorm was on the corner of Broome and Mulberry so I was like mins away from Chinatown and all that stuff. I was so into it for a while there.

This thread made me go to the Sanrio page where it has facts about all the characters. I sort of love the one about this PomPom fellow:
