The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

ah sorry. this was lame.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

8

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

i remember in elementary school math classes feeling a kinship with the odd numbers and assuming they were somehow underdogs. I resented the evens. /crazy

horseshoe, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, something strikes me as utterly correct about the number 4

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

ha 4 is probably the greatest oppressor of odd numbers

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

i was about to say! 4 is totally fascist!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

5

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:08 (seventeen years ago)

i think 5 was my favorite, too. it's cute!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

The Reverend, this question is important. Do not chide yourself. I think about it often.

I felt the numbers '0' and '5' were bad because everyone set their clocks at 5 and 10 minute intervals. That is why, still to this day, I set the microwave for times like 1:27 or 3:03 because they would just get neglected otherwise.

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:16 (seventeen years ago)

Three is great and three squared is nine so nine might be even greater! But the greatest number of them all, the greatest is three to the THIRD power, twenty-seven. (I also have a kinship for '27' because I think the happiest I remember my dad is when his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, won the TWENTY-SEVENth Superbowl. Really stuck with me.)

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

(He was notably happy that night. Is why.)

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

it's sad how your dad and i are mortal football enemies, but i agree with you about 3. his cowboys also won super bowl 28. ;_;

horseshoe, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

He was like "I can't believe they WON! It's the 27, I'm telling you! Remember, (my mom's name), we got married when I was 27. GO COWBOYS!!! COWBOYS!!!"

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

Mom was an afterthought.

Abbott, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

are you a middle child? i am in middle of 3 and i always resented even numbers because i would never be on one side or the other. i kinda like 7, but i don't know why.

tehresa, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

lol my dad prayed during halftime of super bowl xxv. dads.

xpost, no I'm the eldest!

horseshoe, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

7, it should be noted, is the highest prime number out of the digits

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

odd numbers vs. even numbers is the beatles vs. stones of numerology.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

All you need know is that pi(n)/(n/ln(n)) ~ 1.

max, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 06:31 (seventeen years ago)

Roman numerals have more aesthetic qualities, for example VIII compared to 8.

Bob Six, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

...but 8 totally for its symmetrical and well balanced look...

Bob Six, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 06:35 (seventeen years ago)

i've been thinking about 5 lately because of the kid learning his numbers. showing him how to count on his hands. units of 5 become this really basic obvious thing at that level.

i guess in simpsons world everything must be base 8.

utterly insipid navel-gazing bullshit in a landslide

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 08:11 (seventeen years ago)

You have digits in your navel?

Alba, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.spacemen3.co.uk/images/sp3logo.gif

It's a magic number, you know!

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 08:41 (seventeen years ago)

The Spacemen 3 logo makes a good argument. Weren't you gonna get that as a tattoo?

I want to vote for the most downtrodden, least respected of the digits but I can't decide which one that is. 6 maybe?

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

Yes. And now I have money again, I shall!

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

I too felt as a kid there was something kind of smug about even numbers. Of course to buy into a dichotomy on whichever side is to participate in the glorification of two-ness which is the root of the self-satisfaction of the evens so you cannot win. Right?

So I was all about the 3s and the 7s as the quirky underdogs, the first choice of somehow more random-looking number, until I decided that they're everyone's favourite quirky underdog numbers and everyone's first "quick, make it look random! nobody else will have thought of it" number and so also wildly overrepresented and... shit, I don't know any more, man. I expect a good showing for 3 and 7, and I'm thinking 8 is going to do badly, cz it's just so dull, even, power-of-2, plump round symbol, a little too pleased with its own symmetry... not even the 3 of 2^3 can save it.

I am glad other people have these thoughts too because now I've typed them they look a little unstable sitting there on the screen in front of me.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

I like 8 because it can be turned on its side to form an infinity symbol.

And it's a cube, which is always good. It's like a completed 3, and on old school calculators, it's the digit that uses up all the LEDs.

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

*backs away cautiously* (from space cadet)

I'm going for six. I'm thinking it'll likely be under-represented. And it's also two threes so should be doubly magic.

Realised I have just spent more than twenty-one minutes contemplating this vote; I can probably not complain about how poorly I am paid.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

Joy of 6 for me.

onimo, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

odd numbers are indie. 4 is the radio smash hit.

jabba hands, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

5 had everything handed to it on a silver platter.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

> So I was all about the 3s and the 7s as the quirky underdogs

isn't 3 the most popular choice when people are asked for a number between 1 and 5 and 7 the same for numbers < 10? hardly underdogs.

whereas 6 is my birthday. and perfect. and triangular.

koogs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

> "quick, make it look random! nobody else will have thought of it"

oh, you said that. oops.

koogs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

7. 7 has class.

chap, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

if man is 5 and the devil is 6 then god is 7

so imagine how awesome 8 must be

blueski, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

Awesome is seven letters
seven is five letters
five is four letters
four is four letters
Awesome = 4

It's math.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

when i had a microwave i did this too but just because i was lazy... instead of 3:00 i would just keep hitting 3 like the old mitch hedberg phone number joke

and what, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

Seven. It's an odd number with even in it.

4 is unlucky and 8 symbolises prosperity/wealth in Chinese culture.

Roz, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

i was always number four in my class so... yeah four.

stevienixed, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

The word "four" in Japanese is similar to the word for "death", which is why it's considered unlucky. When I was younger, I had this thing* where objects had to be 4 in total, because "2 times 2 equals 4". That's as much of an explaination as I could have given you for why? at the time. Then I had a similar obsession with 3, and also 9 ("3 times 3 equals 9"). Maybe there's some kind of latent fascination with square roots or something. The number 7 as well, simply because it's considered a lucky number in Western cultures, and also because by that time I felt that I needed some luck and had developed a phobia of even numbers.

snoball, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

i also favored 4 as a kid, i think 2+2 = 2*2 = 4 blew my mind

sleep, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

I too favoured odd numbers as a kid because of some instinctive affinity with the underdog. Never liked 7, though, as its status as a 'lucky number' made it far too popular. I had the same problem with 5 as Abbott (though it never impinged on my liking for 0, which I always dissociated from 10) - the use in clocks made it feel too eveny. 3 is okay but I feel in a 9 kind of mood today.

emil.y, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

i remember having a short obsession with 9 because everything multiplied by 9 eventually adds up to 9. 9x2=18, 1+8=9, 9x27=243, 2+4+3=9

Roz, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

Yes. The nine song is about the only thing I remember about Square One besides Mathnet. "My name is Monday. I'm a mathematician."

Roz, Thursday, 3 April 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

1 has been overdone by the monists, whose tribe is numerous.
2 has been overdone by the dualists, whose tribe waxes anon.
3 has been overdone by Christian mystics.
4 is simply stolid and impossible to be around.
5 is too cute, a regular half-pint with moon eyes.
6 is dull.
7 is overrated.
8 is not much better than 4, if anything a tad worse.
9 is of some interest, but is complex in a sadly simple sort of way.

I voted zero. It is the only one that has real style.

Aimless, Thursday, 3 April 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

I love what Charles Seife has to say about zero:

"Worst of all, if you wantonly divide by zero, you can destroy the entire foundation of logic and mathematics!"
