Congratulations, Maura! I can't tell you how much I'll look forward to reading this. I will even read it without secretly hoping it's worse than my stuff, an honor egoists like me rarely grant.

Ah, so new media! One wonders to what, exactly, those young men are dedicated? Some interesting websites, perhaps?

My book is out ... in Iran.
Or not yet. But maybe soon? I got an email forwarded to me over the weekend from a Mr. Moosavi, who says he is an Iranian translator and journalist and has translated the book I wrote six years ago. This is, as far as I know, an unauthorized translation -- reminds me of this article from the Atlantic.
Anyway, I wrote the guy to see what he wants. I wonder, if I help him, will I be violating trade sanctions or something? (And I wonder if that Peter Mountford article has emboldened illicit translators around the world to just go straight to the source...)

If you sold some continuing portion of the rights to a publisher, then you should at least share this info with them, I suppose, in case they want to pursue it. If you own all the rights, then it's your show and do what you want.

Publisher definitely owns the rights to any foreign publication (I get a cut of royalties, obv). I guess I'll wait and see if I hear back from the guy.

Of course part of me is flattered that somebody in Iran is supposedly taking the time to translate it.

OK, so he just wrote me back:
Dear Sir I translated your great book 3 years ago but still waiting for some change in IRAN to get it published. As you know in IRAN, there 's no copyright rules! So first of all I want to have your consent to get Post pop Cinema published in my country. So, could you please answer these questions?1- I have translated 2007th edition of your book, is there anything changed in other editions or not? If yes let me know to take care of it. 2- Have you used cultural studies approach in your book to deal with different issues?(As I know, you first of all offer a concise portrait of the filmmaker's career and background, then for each film you analyze the American society, the film itself, cultural issues. music. race, ...). 3- Most filmmakers that you have included in your book, have made some films since 2007.Don't you have any plans to write about those films in future? 4-I had some difficulties in translating these words or sentences that I have highlighted, please do me a favor and clarify them for me:
And there follows about six specific sentences with idioms and references that baffled him.
I don't really know what to do! Also I'm sort of afraid that I'm going to get a CIA monitor on my gmail account just for having this exchange.

congratulations

you're big in iran :-)
I like that a possible consequence of Iranian liberalization would be the publication of a pirated copy of my book. But really, I don't even know if I should write back. Or maybe just say, thanks for the interest, but under the circumstances I can't really help you?
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 24 December 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
Also, one of the words he wants me to clarify is "stoner."
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 24 December 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)
Help the guy out, and argue with your publisher later, if it even comes to that. More people reading your book = A Good Thing.

Is it okay to post stuff about my book or is this thread strictly for Maura?
― Raymond Cummings, Monday, 24 December 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)
stoner = hashish-e
― the late great, Monday, 24 December 2012 21:40 (thirteen years ago)
i would definitely help him out.

I just finished a self-published collection of my stuff going back to the mid-'80s:
https://www.createspace.com/4976569
I included a little from ILX--mostly a series of posts on The Social Network. A lot of what's in there comes from various '90s fanzines, including Radio On and Why Music Sucks. If you've ever considered self-publishing, I highly recommend CreateSpace: their support is great (Lulu much less so), the finished product looks good, and 80 copies of a 450-page book costs me all of $600. I also put together a Grooveshark playlist for some of the songs that turn up:

Nice. I was just reading around in my copy of the book you wrote with Scott W last weekend.

I don't think it's ILX's kind of thing, but Scott Woods (who used to post here) and I just self-published a book on Donald Trump. If you are interested, you can get it through Createspace or Amazon, and there's a website where you can get an idea of what's in the book.
