― max, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, there are three options there that are really one big long awesome fight.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link
yo when are they going to release the special DVD or whatever that has both movies cut together??

vernita green vs. crazy 88
― Jordan, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link
I almost went for the elle driver fight, though. what a payoff.
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link
for reals.

i'm picking Beatrix v. Elle Driver if just for the hilarious ending of elle screaming and wildly cursing beatrix

Anyone who votes the Bill fight is RONG.
The scene between her and Bill at the wedding chapel is awesomes, tho.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link
guess i'm gonna have to go for o-ren?
would vote for the crazy 88 if it weren't for the b&w business.

waht
― HI DERE, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah b&w kinda soured me on crazzy 88 fight even though the fight in front of the blue screen is pretty visually stunning

vs elle

crazy 88 tho, for jonny mo's wudan and whatnot
― blueski, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link
i mean i know he had to do the b&w to get the rating but it still kills the momentum for me
― s1ocki, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link
i didn't mind the b&w because it was such a kitchen-sink scene, it was like "sure, why not".
― Jordan, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link
The color->b&w->(color?->)silhoutte thing is just achingly wonderful.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link
vernita green fight is just brutal.

Anyway, Elle.
― Oilyrags, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:13 (sixteen years ago) link
Elle, for the close-quarters-ness of it. Unable to unsheath sword, etc. It kinda makes it an extension of the coffin-escape scene in a way.

Beatrix v. O-Ren Ishii is the worst.
voting for the 88s, assuming it includes vs. gogo
― gff, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link
in my mind gogo and 88 are separate fights but i could see it either way

― gff, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

― Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link
Oooo, good poll. I went with Bill, cos I love how quick and understated it is after that lengthy build-up. Clever storytelling there.
― chap, Thursday, 3 April 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link
Is it the Japanese cut of Kill Bill that stays in color during the Crazy 88 fight? Because that version is awesome.
― The Yellow Kid, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:57 (sixteen years ago) link
real answer here is anime O-Ren fucking up the guy who killed her parents

― El Tomboto, Thursday, 3 April 2008 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Well yeah, because one long seamless fight was arbitrarily broken up into three bits in order to keep this from being a landslide.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 3 April 2008 21:39 (sixteen years ago) link
now you know what it feels like to have a poll be arbitrarily screwed with. IT BREAKS YOUR HEART.

I still voted!
― HI DERE, Thursday, 3 April 2008 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link
to be honest i figured there would be more outrage if i left that whole scene together-- though i do think the gogo fight and extended crazy 88s fight are diff 'fights'

Elle Elle Elle
I really jumped out of my seat a little bit when Uma Thurman plucks out the eyeball. Best build-up and release of tension ever.

Not sure if it's the only one, but the Japanese version does have an all-color Crazy 88 scene. Honestly kind of liked the B&W version better.

― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:14 (thirteen years ago) link
as much as i absolutely love these movies, i still feel a bit robbed by the fact that they had to ditch the original ending of beatrix & bill fighting on a moonlit beach outside his hacienda
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link
for me it pretty much ruined the movie.
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:42 (thirteen years ago) link
i feel like the movie is juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust whimsical enough in places to get away with the anti-climactic exploding heart ending, but yeah it's a bit of a disappointment
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:44 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean fuck, they spend half of both movies building up to a mammoth confrontation. Even SONNY FUCKING CHIBA is scared of Bill! And then he just slices some wonderbread, rambles on for 10 minutes and gets killed in a split second "fight."
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:45 (thirteen years ago) link
jord do you know if there was a reason why they ditched the original ending?
― iatee, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link
i read on imdb that it's just cuz production was running too long
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link
i have mixed feelings -- on the one hand, i feel like they should've just said fuck a deadline & filmed the scene. also feel like even if they had to ditch that scene in particular, they could've choreographed a cool sword fight in the hacienda or whatever. on the other hand i sorta feel like the sword fighting in vol. 1 (or the first two hours, if we're talking about a full movie) is so heavy & epic that it might've been hard to do a beatrix/bill final swordfight w/o it feeling anti-climactic in some regard
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:51 (thirteen years ago) link
that is such a lame reason damn!

Elle Driver fight is the best moment in either movie. ending of KB2 is closest i've come to throwing my hands up and saying "I've had it with Tarantino" - that thing he does where he builds tension with long conversations is great when he pulls it off, but when he doesn't the scene sinks like a stone. there's no tension to the confrontation w/Bill and there's no ~emotional weight~ to it either... these movies are just overstuffed and i think there's a lot of perfectly good scenes in them that would've played better if they were in a movie with more modest goals.

haha i loved the bill fight! i did think this movie was Too Long and prob could have lost a whole 20 minutes if you just deflowered people's syntax a lil, so i am not endorsing every second of the goldfish/superman stuff, but the actual "fight" i thought was great: bill walking barefoot into the dark garden while you count his steps, and then the play-gunfight-echoing silent drop to the grass. cannot imagine coming to the end of four hours of kill bill and feeling cheated of swordfights. i saw the first one in the theatre and didn't see this one till just now, but i rewatched the first one first, hence my whetted swordfight appetite i guess. anyway, good breakup movie.

Yeah, Bill's death is great! It's possible when I first saw this I was disappointed that there wasn't more of a "final fight" but it totally made sense to me. Plus she'd already been through the sort of "samurai showdown" deal with O-Ren, it wouldn't be anything new. Maybe the idea is we've finally arrived at the last cult genre which Elle must face, and it's...a Tarantino movie! Everybody's just talking about pop culture and dying at inopportune moments.
At the time I was convinced the one-movie version would be way better. Not sure how I feel now, having not watched them in ages they seem pretty watchable and great in my memory, but I suspect there's enough flab that it could be made to kinda work, though at the expense of what I'm not sure. You could easily do a re-cut of these that dials it all down to a wacky comedy, and one that cuts all the laugh lines for something much more brutal and exhausting. Or it could primarily be a slow "hunt" kind of movie if the action scenes were all sliced down to their climaxes.
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 10 February 2014 19:38 (ten years ago) link
i'm sure i'll be a minority of one here, but i thought the kill bill movies were wretched. there's a grim, seedy joylessness that normally runs through tarantino's movies, but the grim, seedy joylessness here swallows-up the entirety of these two movies.
and i like grim movies! maybe i've just had enough of tarantino's particular style. he still writes good dialogue.

colorful description! i had to look up "distended"(swollen due to pressure from inside; bloated). the rest i got.
his movies have been far less foot-fetish-y, and far more chopsocky-y, lately.
