i will be arriving by car, sometime around monday (april seventh), give or take a night in coos bay. i will be living in first hill, and i know nothing about the area.

Task #1: Punch anyone who calls First Hill "Pill Hill"
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)
i already got pissed at wikipedia for that, mackro
here are some elementary questions
where are the nearest:
1) good independent markets 1a) trader joes, whole foods ... 2) coffeeshops within walking distance 3) video rental store 4) cheap lunch places 5) affordable gyms 6) decent (social, young) bars
?
― remy bean, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
i will be going to EMP for sure, though probably not the whole thing.
7) floozies

I'm pretty First Hill illiterate, but I'll give it a shot:
1) good independent markets
There are many. Co-ops and Whole Foods type places make up most of the supermarketscape in the city... places like Safeway and QFC are certainly around, but don't really dominate. that's the way SEA rolls. If you're close to Madison, then you can get to Madison Market, which is a great co-op on top of Capitol Hill.
There's another independent market near Madison and Terry(?)
1a) trader joes, whole foods ... Whole Foods: South Lake Union, Denny & Westlake. Notable for being right under Tutta Bella, and being SLUT accessible.
Trader Joes: there are a few. Upper Queen Anne, University District, is there on in Capitol Hill, guys?
2) coffeeshops within walking distance Look for air. Where there is air, there is a coffeeshop.
3) video rental store Scarecrow Video in the U-district/Ravenna. VERY MUCH worth the trip. It's the Powell's Books of videos. There's also Rain City Video, which is good too.. at least the Fremont one.
4) cheap lunch places How cheap? $5 meals? Offhand, there's Cafe Zum Zum on 3rd and Marion. Very much a business-oriented assembly line place. $4-something gets you a huge dish of rice, curry, and a flatbread.
Seattle's not the best city for under-$5 good fast food, admittedly. There aren't too many fast food chains in the city at all. Plenty of great markets tho.
5) affordable gyms There's a YMCA in south downtown, I think.
6) decent (social, young) bars Remy, we will give you an inaugural FAP and give you a list of these places. There are many, but they may not be obvious on a street level. We regularly FAP at the Canterbury off 15th Ave in Capitol Hill. Anyone who hates the Canterbury (food notwithstanding) is dead to me.
7) floozies Oh, just walk down to the main drag of Pioneer Square any night. ANY night. Not sure if "Asian Nights" is still happening in SoDo. (ugh)
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)
Look for air. Where there is air, there is a coffeeshop.

1) good independent markets Madison Market at 16th and Madison Pike Place Market of course, 1st and Pike various PCCs (Fremont is probably your closest one though) U-district farmers market is year-round, every Saturday from like 10 - 3
1a) trader joes, whole foods ... Trader Joes, the Capitol Hill one is at 17th and Madison Brand new Whole Foods on the Denny regrade at 2210 Westlake
― Jaq, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)
Just in time, they FINALLY released a Not For Tourists guide to Seattle. (still, a lot of the places listed in there have closed or moved. still a great book to get tho.)
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i had the LA / SF versions, i will definitely pick it up.
thanks for quick answers, guys.

4) cheap lunch places
Dick's for cheap burgers/fries/shakes Cafe Zum Zum 2nded a gazillion pho and bahn mi places off Jackson in the ID and everywhere else around town
― Jaq, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
ID = International District = Chinatown. First Hill's adjacent to it (and also Beacon Hill I think?)
(the NFT Seattle book snark really really grates. i would have tossed the book if they weren't 95% right on things.)
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)
I'm already proposin' a Tamarind Tree FAP. Remy is covered as far as $$$ goes (at least on my behalf) How about it?
― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, NFT can be really annoying. the LA version called my solidly working-class west-side neighborhood 'reclaimed slum'
― remy bean, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
More cheap lunches: Mae Phim Thai, 1st & Columbia House of Hong for all-day dim sum (cheap if you are careful)
I haven't gone back to Tamarind Tree since the NYT write up. Maybe it's back down to earth again.
Beacon Hill is the east border of the ID, First Hill is the north border.
― Jaq, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
Tamarind Tree FAP = good, now that I actually know where to look for it, haha.

― Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
Also, lots of amazing and cheap produce at the small markets in the ID. Head south on any numbered street smaller than 14th until you hit Jackson and you are there.
― Jaq, Thursday, 3 April 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

I'm kind of a Seattle thread lurker as well as I visit there somewhat frequently.
Anyway, I'd never heard of How to Cook A Wolf before, I want to check it out. It seems that every new-ish trendy/fancy place I've been to in the last year has the same wooden walls motif going.
I always seem to end up at La Carta de Oaxaca in Ballard whenever I go to Seattle. India Bistro is right nearby but I keep getting swayed by shrimp tostadas.

OK, unless anyone objects
Tuesday, April 8th, 6:30pm. Tamarind Tree
Directions! NOTE: the tack should be closer to 12th ave and north a tad. The restaurant is tucked away in the inner corner of that little retail corner.
The 6:30pm time is a soft deadline, in lieu and fear of the New York Times hype. Arrive whenever convenient for you. 7pm is my target mainly for the first round of orders.
If Remy hits a snag on the way up, we can defer to Wednesday April 9th at a moment's notice? Worst case: I'd still up for the Tues or Wed. FAP anyway, since it's been a while since I saw most of you. But I'd understand if you wanted to wait until Remy was here, which brings me to the following...
There are plans for a Tamarind Tree FAP *anyway* on Sunday April 13th in the late afternoon/early dinner hours, as a chill-out post EMP Pop Conf 2008 thing. Time TBD, dependent on how fucking tired Pop Conf folks are. If this is the first one Remy can make in worst case scenario, there is that too.
You can go to both too! Take it form me, you don't really get sick of Tamarind Tree.
If you guys need bus directions from wherever you are and Google Maps gives you the gas face, let me know.
― Mackro Mackro, Friday, 4 April 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)
OK, I just found that NYT article. WTFF?
http://events.nytimes.com/2007/11/25/travel/25frugal.html
To survive a weekend on a budget of just $500 — a fortune for grunge aficionados but a pittance for high-tech billionaires
http://www.worth1000.com/entries/81500/81773DIKH_w.jpg
I wouldn't say they gave me the munchies, but still, it wasn't long before we were eating again, this time at Tamarind Tree, a Vietnamese restaurant. Often, Vietnamese food loses its oomph when gussied up, but Tamarind Tree managed to blend style (black lacquer, bamboo accents) with dishes as authentic as any I've eaten in this country. Nell, Andy, a couple of friends and I ordered so much — from easy-to-enjoy skewers of grilled beef to a sour halibut soup — that our waitress started laughing. Still, we spent only $28 each.
http://www.alpacamine.com/images/grrrr.jpg
(you don't need $28 for the Tree, obv)
Finally, I could eat no more. It was time, at last, to pay homage to a noisy, rebellious, long-defunct rock band. No, not Nirvana — Jules Maes, a saloon in semi-industrial Georgetown, was playing host to a salute (admission $5) to Big Black, a hard-core band that had played its last gig in Seattle 20 years before on that weekend. In the back-room theater, local bands screamed out “Bad Penny” and “Colombian Necktie” from an album whose unprintable name has made me blush ever since I saw it back in 1987.
Awwww.
The show was loud and chaotic, and one guitarist strummed with his teeth, back and forehead. I sipped a $2 Rainier beer. Perfect.

Yeah, FAPPING while Matos is behind the tables is kinduva must.
And EMP on Sunday ends in the afternoon, so there's time in between for food. That said, does Havana have a food menu? Didn't see it listed on the site, so I thought I'd ask.
― Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 6 April 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
there's no food menu to speak of, not anything worth checking out.
― jergïns, Sunday, 6 April 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)
Just use this thread for now even though its not something imminent, but what is Tacoma like as a place to live? (sadly seattle itself would be too long a commute)
― vaqueros, Sunday, 6 April 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)
Tacoma: kind of smelly at times, due to various industries that are there. but has a couple interesting museums and some decent music venues. less expensive for rents than Seattle - we considered moving there when I was working in south Seattle, but the commute would have done me in.
The bartender at Havana told me they can order in a pizza if you want (and there are at least two servers there), but whatever they offer as food is something they nuke and generally not worth eating.
― Jaq, Sunday, 6 April 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)
there are great neighborhoods in Tacoma.. i guess it depends on you define as nice. I'd totally live off 6th Ave in Tacoma if living in Tacoma was my only sane option for work purposes.
Overall, it's more sprawly than Seattle city proper... gap between rich white Republican money and poor is much wider, unfortunately, so you get a lot more classism issues. There's the east-end downtown Tacoma which has its nice parts and seedy parts and has the most character (and the waterfront, which is Tacoma's best asset), then there's the Tacoma Mall part of Tacoma, which is just life sucking in the most meddling way possible (with the added bonus of being that much closer to Ft. Lewis. joy!)
― Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 6 April 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)
Given Havana's not-much-foodage, Tamarind Tree followed by MatosFAP sounds good and noble.

OK, Remy is here. He's @ H|_|bbl3 pl (right next to Morley!). Tonight at Tamarind Tree is on!
My work location is on Remy's way to Tamarind Tree, so the default plan is for both of us to just bus it from 3rd and Columbia, since there are 3-4 buses that can take us to 12th and Jackson.
however if any of you driving want to pick us up off 2nd Ave (since 3rd + rush hour = no cars allowed) for any reason, that's cool too.
Remy has no internet access and says he will now nap for a while.
So, 6:30pm (soft deadline) at Tamarind Tree tonight!
― Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)
