I went on a date a with a new girl last night and she tells me she's recently been diagnosed with HPV. I know it's an STD, but other than that I'm clueless. Does anyone know anything about this ? Serious answers please.
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
What do you want to know? Can you get it from her? Yes. Even if you use condoms? Yes. Will it cause genital warts? Depends on what type she is infected with--probably type 16 or 18. Is it treatable? Not exactly, but most people will clear it within a year. Should she get regular pap smears to make sure it doesn't progress to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (aka dysplasia), or to cervical cancer? Hellz yeah. Am I a doctor and should you take my word for it? No. Any other questions?

hit it hard, oscar
― chaki, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)
Does it taste like candy?
― HI DERE, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
Yes. Next?
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)
Man this fucking sucks, from what I can see shes doesn't seem like the promiscuous type, but who knows. So it can be completely removed after a year with proper treatment ? Or will the virus always remain ?
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
dude she doesnt have to be promiscuous, like more than 3/4ers of sexually active people have it
― deej, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)
if you've had sex you might be giving it and not even know
having hpv != promiscuous, jeez especially one like this that's so common. most men don't get symptoms for the kind that causes cervical cancer in women and there is no test for it, so you could have it yourself and just never know it. xpost
― bell_labs, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)
ah. yeah, shes says shes only had 3 partners, and shes 25. she said she did not have the cervical cancer type. what a way to start a first date. at least she was honest though.
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)
Yep! Sometimes I think every woman I know over the age of 25 has had some strain of HPV at some point. Weird thing to bring up on the first date, though, for sure.
― Laurel, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)
Or will the virus always remain ?
pretty sure it always remains.
― Jordan, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)
yeah my bad about the promiscuous part. im completely ignorant of this std hence, my questions. i just want to be aware, etc.
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)
Deej speaks the truth. And yeah, most people will clear the virus within a year (so Jordan NOTM)--no treatment required (nor does one exist). Helps if you don't smoke and are basically healthy otherwise. And yeah something like 2/3 of college-age ppl have it, so hardly a scarlet letter of promiscuity.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)
Funny that she says it isn't the cancer type. Maybe she has type 11? I think the tests they have only type 11, 16, and 18 (with 16 and 18 being the cervical cancer types), but maybe I am wrong. . .
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
there is a vaccine for this, btw. though i don't think they offer it to men since the usually have no symptoms, it's mostly to prevent cervical cancer.
― bell_labs, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)
the vaccine is for women under 26 i think
― deej, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)
I think about 74% of the women I know, including some decidedly non-promiscuous family members, have been diagnosed with this lately. I think its been getting a huge push in the medical community.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)
i guess i'm thinking of herpes or whatever.
― Jordan, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)
"We need to talk... I've been diagnosed with whatever."
― HI DERE, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah you're stuck with any of the herpes viruses (which include the virus that cause chickenpox, mono, cold sores, genital herpes, and other stuff).
xpost
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
so since men dont show symptoms, what is the main danger ? spreading it to other women i suppose ?
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
One day your dick will shoot fire.
― HI DERE, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)
It used to be the common wisdom that this was a permanent, incurable thing, but actually yr immune system usually kills it off within, like, a year? If yr doc or you are worried about active patches of shedding cells you can have various kinds of scraping or cutting of the outbreak area, but srsly keep those sharp object out of my uterus, thank u v much.
The vaccine, btw, works on boys as well, and really boys SHOULD be getting it, just as a public health issue -- if they're resistant to contracting the virus, there are fewer channels in which it can spread. But the company originally aimed their campaign at girls and now it's too late to make a second first impression.... I think a version for older people may be in development as well?
― Laurel, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
Well, men CAN show symptoms if they're infected with a wart-forming type (type 6 or 11). In which case look out cauliflower dick.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
Some strains of HPV cause visible genital warts, which is about the only way guys ever realize they have, and have been spreading, HPV.
xp hah
― Laurel, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not sure Merck is actively seeking FDA approval for men getting the vaccine? The trials would cost a fortune to run and there may not be much of a market for it, so dunno if it will happen any time soon.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
Hmm. I can't remember now where I read the "vaccine works on boys" angle, nor the exact wording. An online article of some kind.
― Laurel, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe it was a wish article written by someone unexpectedly presented with cauliflower dick?
― HI DERE, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I haven't really kept up on that.
Oh but men CAN get tested; they just aren't as a matter of routine practice; testing involves having a q-tip thing shoved up the urethra so yeah I don't see many men banging down the doors to get the test.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)
I feel I should post some cauliflower dick photos as a public health service.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)
um she did mention that she noticed a visible ahem down there which is the reason she got tested. she seemed pretty shaken up about it, she just got diagnosed this week.
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)
Ahhhh, here it is: NYT article from Feb
― Laurel, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
Dood, she has genital warts.
Sorry.
But for real, CAULIFLOWER DICK
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
A visible ahem? Did she notice it during a visit to the little girls' room?
― Laurel, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, what a fucking shame. she's an awesome girl too.
― oscar, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)
she didnt tell me how she noticed it. but im sure it was during one of those visits.
uh, at least she doesnt have cervical cancer, since she's such an awesome girl and all
― bell_labs, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)
Totally not the end of the world; she'll have a little cryosurgery and will be done with it. Retest in six months, could be negative.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)
You should def. send flower with "congrats on your wart removal!" That would be endearing.
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)
Also, offer to sex her butt until it clears up.
― HI DERE, Friday, 4 April 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)
or she could exclusively blow you for a year
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)
I mean srsly, this could be the best thing that ever happened for both of you!
― quincie, Friday, 4 April 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)
I just assume everyone has HPV...
― Viceroy, Friday, 4 April 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to cauliflower dick. No offense to the cruciferous veg peeners, sorry dudes.

― Abbott, Friday, 4 April 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)
Hey, I'm a nurse and I've been an HPV case manager for 8 years.
80% of all sexually active adults have at least one strain. If you've had sex with more than two people, you've probably already been exposed to it. The strains that cause warts do not tend to cause cancer. Most strains do not cause warts. Most guys don't ever know they have it until a partner gets a bad pap smear.
They good news for you is that HPV doesn't really affect men all that much. Sure, it has been linked to penile and anal cancer, but both of these are pretty rare as HPV prefers to cause cancer within the squamous cells of the cervix (as opposed to epithelial cells on the penis). Only about 1200 cases of penile cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the US this year. The main risk it that you are potentially infectious to future partners.
Since HPV is spread by contact (instead of fluids), condoms help, but aren't 100%.
That help?
