The worst movie you've ever loved

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

This is about movies that were critically panned and/or hated by your peers, but you loved it despite all that, and thought everyone else was missing the point.

Apologies if this thread exists in some form already - I searched and found nothing.

Mine:

Let's Go to Prison (2006) - 8% on the Tomatometer, made $4,613,815
Review blurbs: "The short and the sweet of it: Let's Go to Prison is one of the worst pieces of Hollywood garbage I have ever seen." - Ryan @movie-news.com

"Odenkirk's grim second directorial effort combines the laughter of a prison drama with the psychological authenticity of a lowbrow comedy. It's an indifferently filmed pitch-black comedy shrouded in a pervasive grey funk that swallows up what few meager chuckles it manages." - Nathan Rabin @ avclub

The thing is, even these bad reviews make me laugh at the movie. I love pretty much everything Bob Odenkirk has had anything to do with, and I guess I feel like I 'get' this movie or something. Yes, the joke topics covered by this movie are covered by a million other prison movies, shows, comedy sketches, etc - but I laugh at a lot of well-worn joke topics. For me the enjoyment of this movie comes from the delivery of the jokes and the great comedic actors playing the roles.

What about you all?

i feel like i should explain so this doesn't turn into a boring list thread, but short answer: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

It's one of those films I grew up with (see Adventures in Babysitting, Goonies), so maybe it's just nostalgia.

Another vote for Super Mario Bros. movie.

Event Horizon.

S-, Saturday, 5 April 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

These two are kind of cult classics these days, but both Vampire's Kiss and Killing Zoe were movies I love that all my friends hated and got bad reviews.

rockapads, Saturday, 5 April 2008 09:07 (seventeen years ago)

I liked Event Horizon enough for it to qualify for mine, too.

"Weekend At Bernie's" - a friend of mine saw this at the cinema, and there were only a dozen people in the audience. By the end of the film, half of them had walked out and my friend was the only one who was laughing. It gets bonus points because my landlord at the time looked like the actor who plays Bernie.

snoball, Saturday, 5 April 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

electric dreams seconded

stevie, Saturday, 5 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

pcu

I saw this only as a market research preview. I've never been asked so many questions about Jeremy Piven in my life. I liked the movie though. Apparently, i saw the full unedited Parliament performance.

arghhh

latebloomer, Sunday, 6 April 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls should not be on this thread.

I've been trying to come up with something that would fit, but there are always too many caveats. Most 'trashy' stuff is either genuinely good (John Waters etc) or really popular (I dunno, like Revenge of the Nerds, which is also actually goood). Stuff like Dogomatic or Till Dad Us Do Part weren't actually loved, but rather scoffed at by me & my equally hungover friend in paroxysms of joy and stupidity... In the end, probably the stuff that Ilx consensus would have as 'worst' in my film taste is stuff like the original Funny Games or earlier Lars vT, which in actual fact is great, and fuck tha hataz.

emil.y, Sunday, 6 April 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

Death Race 2000 should not be on this thread.

Dogma, maybe? Most people think that sucks don't they?

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 6 April 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

The Craft - YES

Fuck you, that is a great movie, no shame. Same with Finding Forrester, maybe.

Hey, I love 'em (obviously) but everyone else seems to think they're ass.

milo z, Sunday, 6 April 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

No love for the pr0n?

Sorry, I totally meant to say PCU! Seconded, thirded or whatever!

briania, Sunday, 6 April 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

"Maximum Overdrive."

Terrible Cold, Sunday, 6 April 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Nomads" - because it starred Adam Ant and Pierce Brosnan - my two crazy eighties love crushes.

I went to see it twice - which wasn't easy, as it didn't really play in many theatres! I was running a fever the second time, and high on pots and nyquil. And alone? I think I was alone!

it's, um, not a very good movie. I would be shocked if anyone here has ever seen it. Except, maybe, trayce, just for A.A.
