I love that everything is in all caps but 'kiss.'

THE BEER THAT MADE MILWAUKEE FAMOUS

What a bitter backhanded compliment this is.

Abbott, Monday, 7 April 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Oh my god, Jerry Lee Lewis made this song! What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser out of Me) (mp3)

Abbott, Monday, 7 April 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, the fact that this thread was just started a couple of days ago is a sign of cosmic connection -- so I'm flipping through a volume of late 1945 era Newsweeks at the library and I see this astounding ad:

http://a420.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/18/l_5e5a6dbb5e63173c1104a511859c165b.jpg

I am so happy. Photoshoppers, go for broke.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

I would drink a beer that unironically advertised itself that way.

Ed, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

Would you drink it from a fancy tray?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

A Schlitz Globe in the masonry of an old Chicago corner bar. (google street view)

dan m, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

schlitz vs blatz vs huber

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

I would drink it from fancy tray, served to me by my butler, indeed.

Ed, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

I'd love to know why the dude is carrying around the deck of cards in that ad.

"Why thank you honey, I wasn't shuffling often enough and now I have an excuse."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

I've never had Schlitz but I always think of this when I hear the name:

http://www.garagehangover.com/images/pleasureSeekers45.gif

"When I start my drinking
my baby throws a fit
So I just blitz him outta my mind
with seventeen bottles of Schlitz"

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Woman to man: "Oh, honey, Videodrome's trying to give us back our grandfather clock!"

Abbott, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

ALL HAIL THE NEW SCHLITZ

Abbott, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

here's the cheap beer ranking in my mind:

mil's best < busch < schlitz < pbr < hamms

natural ice, icehouse, keystone, and others of that ilk I do not even consider to be beer.

Viceroy, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

I got my first drunk on Schlitz in my grandpa's basement fridge. Had no idea I was drunk until I tried to walk upstairs.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

Schlitz returns to 1960s recipe

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

the one thing i miss about shows at the subterranean was that their cheapest beer was the $2.00 schlitz.

the schlitzkrieg led to many debilitating hangovers.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

i've got this hanging in my dining room:

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

I love the two guys resolutely ignoring the woman in favor of TV. Clearly this ad predicted the future.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

or, something's have never changed.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

or perhaps they were more interested in each other's company.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

something's changed, but some things haven't

dell, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

one thing that never changes: my total disregard for the rules of the english language.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

Some people have way with words. Some not have way. I are one of them.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

She's saying: "Can I say I'm your girlfriend on Facebook?"

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

"I'd love to know why the dude is carrying around the deck of cards in that ad. "

I think he wants his wife to invite another couple over to play cards. If they are iffy, he wants his wife to say they have Schlitz to seal the deal.

Hey, that would work for me.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

Note that our charming hostess in the second ad is suspiciously dangling her left hand - without any ring on the appropriate finger. It's a pinky ring, for goodness sake! What does that tell us about her?

Her guests are enjoying the "Schlitz Playhouse of Stars", but one guest seems to be more interested in a different sort of twinkle.

I think she has invited her nice gay friends over, and they brought a straight guy because they can't stand to see their "dolly" living life as a fag hag.
Schlitz will, indeed, seal the deal for all concerned.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

SCHLITZ SEALS THE DEAL.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

Only if you let it dry long enough to set.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

I posted a ton of old schlitz ads on a thread once. can't remember what it was, though, and have no clue how to locate it.

Edward III, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

It's wonderful that Schlitz is such a light, enjoyable beverage that you can actually see a suitor's fingers through the glass of Schlitz!

The guy in the first ad CLEARLY becomes the "suitor" in the second ad.
He just stops off at a Johnnie Walker ad on his way to the party. he's a little flushed!

What makes the clown smile? Schlitz.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i will pick up some schlitz for band practice in a couple of hours. i've been swayed by their quality advertising.

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

That's no clown, brother.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

man I don't think I've ever had a Schlitz. do they still make it?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

they sure as hell make it in wisconsin.

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

maybe we just don't get it in CA

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

i would bet not.

schlitz is good. id rather have one than pbr at this pt

deej, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

I was hoping maybe Tom would make a comic out of one of these.

dan m, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

they used to have schlitz at my local, back when i had a local.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

A local bar here has PBR and Narragansett on tap - for two bucks. (Which is pretty expensive, I think, but...)I am going to ask them if they can get Schlitz. To replace the PBR, which is better from a can because you can smash it.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

howdy neighbor.... have a 'gansett.

doesnt empty bottle sell schlitz?

deej, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

don't think so. no beer in a can there as far as i can recall. pbr and point are the two cheap beers.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

i'm seriously going to check for schlitz in a bottle after work

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it's different up there but i've only seen it down here in cans.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

that's the link i posted upthread. they're bringing back bottles + the old recipe, like, just now.

Jordan, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

ah.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

I remember drinking Blatz as a teenager. Also Blatz dark. Not bad.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

"howdy neighbor.... have a 'gansett."

It really DOES retain that neighborly feel. It's not very hoppy nor driven by any sort of flavor. It's a Narragansett, fondly referred to as a "nasty", and I think everyone in Boston who drinks bud light should be forced to switch to Narragansett.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

I'm also a big fan of Olympia beer, but only because their logo is "It's In The Water!".
It's not a good beer, I mean, Rainier is way better.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Oly plant shutdown and was no longer being made :(

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

probably it has:((
I am a beer oldster. I hope Raaaayyyyynnnneeerrr. is still being brewed in Georgetown.

I kinda like the really "light' beers on tap - Hamms on tap would be awesome!

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

yep, its gone

sadly so are Rainier and Henry Weinhard's

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

Five summers ago, I went out and got a six-pack of Schlitz, then came home and stayed up until 1 AM, getting all emotional over a book that my favorite professor in college wrote:

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

I used to buy it for like $3.50 a 12-pack at the Fort Meade Class 6

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

This is the saddest beer thread ever. I raise a glass to all of our old labels.

Surely Black Label is still the same!

aimurchie, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

Somebody still make Rainier and Olympia cause I've had both since I moved west. Either is way better than Konkanee.

This is the saddest beer thread ever.

schlitzgusto.com has a bunch of old TV advertisements.

Hot summers call for cheap, cold beer. thank you Schlitz

brownie, Thursday, 10 April 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

i had a schlitz at the bar last night, but didn't see the bottles there or at the liquor store.

(the schlitz tasted like schlitz)

Jordan, Thursday, 10 April 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

it's no coincidence that there's one letter's difference between schlitz and schitz. cuz i got em. every time, even after i should've known better. of course i over did it on the drinkin', as usual, and that may have had something to do with it. still.

andrew m., Thursday, 10 April 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

Note that our charming hostess in the second ad is suspiciously dangling her left hand - without any ring on the appropriate finger. It's a pinky ring, for goodness sake! What does that tell us about her?

It looks a little loose, too. I think she switched fingers right before coming in the door.
