Okay, the fact that this thread was just started a couple of days ago is a sign of cosmic connection -- so I'm flipping through a volume of late 1945 era Newsweeks at the library and I see this astounding ad:

mil's best < busch < schlitz < pbr < hamms

natural ice, icehouse, keystone, and others of that ilk I do not even consider to be beer.

I got my first drunk on Schlitz in my grandpa's basement fridge. Had no idea I was drunk until I tried to walk upstairs.

the one thing i miss about shows at the subterranean was that their cheapest beer was the $2.00 schlitz.

I love the two guys resolutely ignoring the woman in favor of TV. Clearly this ad predicted the future.

I think he wants his wife to invite another couple over to play cards. If they are iffy, he wants his wife to say they have Schlitz to seal the deal.

Note that our charming hostess in the second ad is suspiciously dangling her left hand - without any ring on the appropriate finger. It's a pinky ring, for goodness sake! What does that tell us about her?

Her guests are enjoying the "Schlitz Playhouse of Stars", but one guest seems to be more interested in a different sort of twinkle.

I think she has invited her nice gay friends over, and they brought a straight guy because they can't stand to see their "dolly" living life as a fag hag.
Schlitz will, indeed, seal the deal for all concerned.

It's wonderful that Schlitz is such a light, enjoyable beverage that you can actually see a suitor's fingers through the glass of Schlitz!

The guy in the first ad CLEARLY becomes the "suitor" in the second ad.
He just stops off at a Johnnie Walker ad on his way to the party. he's a little flushed!

they used to have schlitz at my local, back when i had a local.

A local bar here has PBR and Narragansett on tap - for two bucks. (Which is pretty expensive, I think, but...)I am going to ask them if they can get Schlitz. To replace the PBR, which is better from a can because you can smash it.

don't think so. no beer in a can there as far as i can recall. pbr and point are the two cheap beers.

i'm seriously going to check for schlitz in a bottle after work

maybe it's different up there but i've only seen it down here in cans.

I remember drinking Blatz as a teenager. Also Blatz dark. Not bad.

It really DOES retain that neighborly feel. It's not very hoppy nor driven by any sort of flavor. It's a Narragansett, fondly referred to as a "nasty", and I think everyone in Boston who drinks bud light should be forced to switch to Narragansett.

I'm also a big fan of Olympia beer, but only because their logo is "It's In The Water!".
It's not a good beer, I mean, Rainier is way better.

it's no coincidence that there's one letter's difference between schlitz and schitz. cuz i got em. every time, even after i should've known better. of course i over did it on the drinkin', as usual, and that may have had something to do with it. still.
