brainwasher i usually notice when you start posting again cuz you usually disappear for a few days

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:08 (seventeen years ago)

it has nothing to do with that thread

some but not lots

electricsound, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

serious answer, I think generally I notice more when someone starts posting again after not posting for a while

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

Not many ppl seemed to notice when I hadn't been posting a while back. That didn't suprise me in the least.

Trayce, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

But it wasn't like I was all "I AM NEVAR COMING BACK U ALL SUX" anyway so its a bit daft to expect it.

Trayce, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

Occasionally I notice that a very prolific poster has completely stopped. This often coincides with them being a cute girl.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

Not as many BSRW political cartoons floating around since August, that's for sure.

kingfish, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I mean it's not like a classroom where you'd notice the absence of a physical presence, what you'd be noticing is the absence of a certain perspective. That's a much more difficult thing to take note of, and to notice its absence it has to be somewhat distinct in the first place.
So I've noticed, for example, that I haven't seen much of Nabisco lately. Obv I noticed when Jess quit showing up on the rap threads around mid last year I guess.

I imagine after a while someone might go "Hey, no one's been creatively OTM'd in a while. RJDHoos seems incomplete somehow. Where's HOOS?"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

yes, and i'm sorta amazed that people backslide after months, even years of not posting.

gershy, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

i'm pretty sure everyone has the same answer to this-- there is a certain group of posters of which we'd notice if one of them stopped posting. i didn't notice that trayce stopped posting tho i have nothing against her and thought 'tryace has been gone' once she showed up again

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

I wasnt gone that long anyway - was just work.

Trayce, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:27 (seventeen years ago)

yes

John Justen, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

it might be met w/ a mixture of sadness and relief tho

John Justen, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

hey guys i'm about to stop posting for a few months, this is just an advance warning so that you notice ok?

It is always difficult to distinguish between a poster not posting at all and simply posting to threads you have not been interested in opening or reading. BTW, I think my absence would be noticed more in I Love Books than if I disappeared from ILE for a while.

Aimless, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

yes, and i'm sorta amazed that people backslide after months, even years of not posting.

Are we talking about someone besides Felicity?

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

xpost and ask a drunk right?

jabba hands, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought it was weird that Geir would disappear for months at a time and then post very prolifically and then disappear again.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

I had "help."

felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I don't even know what that means.

I just realized, sadly, that last week was probably my longest period of not posting in five years: eight whole days.

jaymc, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

yes jaymc, you are correct. i guess i think if you can make it for 3 months or so without posting, don't look back. maybe not lurking is the key?

gershy, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:53 (seventeen years ago)

No.

Roz, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

there's "notice" and then there's "miss you". if I stopped posting no one would notice, but there'd be a tiny inexplicable vacuum in each and every one of your souls, and you would inevitably turn to hard drugs and cheap sex to fill the void. or cheap drugs and hard sex. anyway, I'm here in the spirit of law and order.

Edward III, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

By the time you've noticed I've stopped posting, it'll be too late for you.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm... potential horror movie premise.

"Say, Hurting 2 hasn't posted in a while. I wonder if he--what was that noise? Oh my god! AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHH!"

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

by the time i get to livejournal, you'll be lolling

gershy, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

it feels like scott seward and rrrobyn haven't been around much lately. so I miss them. and ian.

Edward III, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

ian is around. jhoshea started a scott thread this am and i was thinking 'i haven't seen scott post in a while' and then he magically appeared!

tehresa, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:13 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I've seen him here + there. but ian not on nb is ;_;

I wish him and jon would fuck and make up already.

Edward III, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:22 (seventeen years ago)

probably not wise to go there.

nb is rly slow anyway. 77 where it's at, yo!

tehresa, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:24 (seventeen years ago)

then I will not go there.

everybody's partying down on 77 and I'm out here in the parking lot bumming for change.

Edward III, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty sure noone would notice if I did. And if you think, nah, I would, well, how the fuck did you not notice that I did for a couple of weeks? ;-)

stevienixed, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:00 (seventeen years ago)

not for me, nope.

although in the rare case someone did, I'd hope that person would start a rumor about me going crazy or shit like that.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

Not a chance, and I've been on here for years.

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

narp. but beg to differ stevienixed. =)

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

I noticed, stevienixed.

The only thing being, how do you know people have/have not noticed?

It's not like someone starts a thread "Has Mark G gone off the net?"

Mark G, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

there are a few people i've noticed that haven't posted for a while, but mainly because i've spoken with them outside of ilx. Another one because they posted *so* much, it was hard not to notice that they stopped.

I'm not here often enough probly for anyone to notice if I ever stop posting.

Not that anyone would notice, but if it wasn't for me jumping in with thread-killing non sequiturs, some of these joints would go on forever.

^this. I'm Big Doug aka the Threadkiller.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Pashmina, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

Dang, Pash. Can't you see when someone's trying to make a point?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

but no really I will be disappearing for about a month soon, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I will.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

No, no...when the magic really happens is when a thread just sort of slides off the page, real quiet like.

Flush this question out

onimo, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

For what it's worth, it's been proven that the best way to keep posting to ilx is to make a dramatic announcement on ilx saying you're NEVER POSTING HERE AGAIN.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, esp. since i have contractual obligations to fulfill here via my presence

no

daavid, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

i think people would notice on the chicago thread and on the odd jazz d-bag or new orleans thread, otherwise not so much (and believe me, i am fine with that).

i didn't even notice when i stopped posting

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 10 April 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

I stopped for a couple of years and occasionally I'll stumble upon an old post from Trayce (bless) denoting the fact. Other than that I don't see why anybody I don't know irl would notice or care.

What really stands out is how many people I don't remember existing at all, like hoos and tombot. nfi why, maybe they had different names before.
