Time Flight ftw

DavidM, Friday, 11 April 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

how many votes for Earthshock just because Adric dies?

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 April 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Black Orchid is maybe the best Wet Vet apart from Caves, so it's that really.

aldo, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

er, Kinda > Caves (Caves overrated on a weirdly massive scale)

DavidM, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

Honestly I can't reemmber a single one of these episodes (which admittedly I last saw 20+ years ago.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

Castrovalva: Loopy Doctor almost gets trapped in a recursive trap set by The Master powered by Adric's brain
Four To Doomsday: The crew encounters a ship of seemingly nice aliens who are actually evil
Kinda: Tegan gets posessed by a psychic snake that wants to eat the universe
The Visitation: The team encounters aliens that started a plague in London, leading to the Great Fire
Black Orchid: Pure historical about a Phantom of the Opera-esque dude on a lavish English estate
Earthshock: Adric kills himself and the dinosaurs attempting to save the Earth from Cybermen
Time Flight: The Master kidnaps a plane from Heathrow in another attempt to destroy the Doctor, leading to Tegan's inadvertent abandonment at her old job

HI DERE, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

black orchid was good. I always liked castrovalva but I always like 'first' stories of any of them

akm, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

Black Orchid and Kinda are head and shoulders above the others.

HI DERE, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

"Castrovalva" has the best plot I think. In general the Davison stories make much more sense. "Black Orchid" is pretty good as well, even though it it's a lot like Davison's performance as Campion.

snoball, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

Black Orchid is the only story I remember actually being really scared by as a kid. I had a general dalek fear too, but there were no specific dalek scenes which stayed with me right though to adulthood. Lots of Black Orchid did though, and as a result it's probably my favourite old-who story, full stop.

JimD, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Davison was a very good doctor

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

castrovalva is REALLY saggy between the actually good ideas. kinda is by far the more interesting, even if it is also kind of over-rated.

Alan, Friday, 11 April 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

It really sags when Davison is being hauled around in that box. Particularly as Nyssa and Tegan's dialogue is so clunky.

snoball, Friday, 11 April 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

(xxpost) The difference is that Davison can really act. Look at how he plays Tristram (sp?) compared to the Doctor, when the only real visual difference is the clothes the two characters wear. Both series were broadcast in the UK at the same time, and as a kid it took me a while to realise that it was the same guy. Sometimes scenes fall apart when Davison isn't on screen, but generally the supporting cast were also pretty good, much more competent at acting then during the shouty overacting Colin years.

Matt DC, Sunday, 13 April 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

EVERYONE VOTE FOUR TO DOOMSDAY

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 April 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

which one was doomsday, the one with the fat gay alien who took a shine to sweet, young, hairless boy flesh?

burt_stanton, Sunday, 13 April 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

I think that was your prom.

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 April 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

it still doesn't answer the question

burt_stanton, Sunday, 13 April 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

Hello old people

loliatrics

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 13 April 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

Loliatric Britpop Crew?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 14 April 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

it's funny how everyone bitches about Adric, when Tegan is plainly THE MOST ANNOYING ASSISTANT EVER.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 14 April 2008 10:09 (seventeen years ago)

^ this

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 14 April 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

Her accent used to shit the fuck out of me, but then I discovered she's actually Australian and she sounds exactly that bad in real life. Now it shits the fuck out of me.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 14 April 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

Janet Fielding's great claim to fame is that she appears as herself in one of Seymour Hersh's books, spilling the beans on her shady ex-husband. For this we must salute her.

I don't really mind Tegan's accent, just her characted, which is I think more the fault of the people who made Dr Who then rather than JF.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 14 April 2008 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but her accent is still like a cheese grater.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 14 April 2008 10:32 (seventeen years ago)

tegan was great!

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 14 April 2008 11:34 (seventeen years ago)

Her accent used to shit the fuck out of me, but then I discovered she's actually Australian and she sounds exactly that bad in real life. Now it shits the fuck out of me.

Actually, she doesn't sound quite that bad in real life, but she's meant to be a Queenslander, and they often do have stronger Australian accents, so it was fair enough. But still annoying sometimes. And I'm Australian.

James Morrison, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

So am I.

She's on a commentary (Earthshock?) and she sounds horrible. True about her sounding like a Queenslander.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

Least listened to commentary ever? Unlike the ones on Blake's 7 DVDs, which just feature Jacqueline Pearce purring "darling!" every couple of seconds.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 12:17 (seventeen years ago)

Dude, Tegan is one of my girlfriends, step off.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm im not sure what will win this as there's some really good episodes but I'm gonna have a guess at Time Flight

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 17 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I got that wrong! Damn you lurkers! *shakes fist*

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 April 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

Glad they all got a vote though

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 18 April 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

Holy shit, Burt Kwouk was in this one! What in God's name is Burt Kwouk doing on this show?! Did Blake Edwards loan him out or something?

kingfish, Thursday, 22 May 2008 05:36 (seventeen years ago)

Goddamn but all the companions remind me of no one so much as regulars from the early years of You Can't Do That on Television

kingfish, Thursday, 22 May 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)

What, like Alanis Morrissette?

James Morrison, Thursday, 22 May 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

No, like pre-dating her by 5 years. As I said in the other thread:

Good lord, the haircuts really do get worse, don't they? The one chick looks like Lisa Ruddy and the cross-eyed doofus kid looks like Alistair. Only the sorta ginger one in the crushed velvet get-ups has anything going on.

kingfish, Friday, 23 May 2008 08:03 (seventeen years ago)

Dude, wait until you get to "Arc of Infinity" and Tegan becomes bangin' smokin' hot.

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

(Well okay, maybe not totally bangin' smokin' hot until the last season when her hair frows back out some, but still more ROWR than the purple stewardess outfit.)

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

Tegan is smokin' hot... until she starts talking.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

aw

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

wait, less competition ^_^

HI DERE, Friday, 23 May 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, one of the cybermen actually said "Exxxx-cellent!"

kingfish, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

Well okay, maybe not totally bangin' smokin' hot until the last season when her hair frows back out some, but still more ROWR than the purple stewardess outfit.

kingfish, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, this is novel; this show is only one I've ever seen with old ladies commanding starships(see also the Gridlock ep). You don't see many trucker grandma-types in science fiction, unfortunately.

kingfish, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

yeah like that

HI DERE, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 05:53 (seventeen years ago)

So painful to listen to, that one. The accent, eurghh.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, almost done with Time Flight. God, I don't like Tegan.

Or at least, not this version of her.
