my cats know their names & respond to them but i do give them new nicknames every couple of days or so which they mostly ignore
― electricsound, Monday, 14 April 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
I've never had a cat that didn't seem to know its name.
― milo z, Monday, 14 April 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)
Georgia knows her name, her sister Murder does not. But then Murder has never been the brightest little cat.

Point being that the sCATologist should have made the horrible mess in someone's mouth, I suppose?

....from 9-11 tonight.....
Dave.
Is this a secret message and should I be making p1p3 b0mbs right now or making a f1l3 cake???
― libcrypt, Monday, 14 April 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)
Our orange cat was officially named Fox. The animal shelter and the vet think her name is Fox. And they're right, that is her "real" name but what she actually gets called, and what we've been calling her at home from day 3 or 4 is Titty (or, informally, Titface, Titballs, or Titsmell).
― iiiijjjj, Monday, 14 April 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)
My mother has had her cat for a few years now, and refuses to give her a name. She's just 'the cat' or 'the little black cat'. So my sister and I have taken it on ourselves to try out names when we visit, to see if she responds favorably to any. So far, she seems largely indifferent to Lulu, Mimi, Emma, The Darkness, Pepper, Miss Kittybottoms, and (my favorite) Herr Professor Kittybottoms.
― Jacob, Monday, 14 April 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)
Really I suppose she should be Frau Professor Kittybottoms or something, but somehow I don't like the sound of that, and as a cat she's probably unconcerned with issues of gender in names anyway.

Our younger family cat went from Blackie to Blackkat to Fuzzycat to Fuzzy to Heygetoffthat with a nice revolving regularity, and depending on who was yelling at him.
― kingfish, Monday, 14 April 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)
My cat turned 13 last year, so lately I've been greeting her by saying "You're OLD!" in the most spiteful tone I can muster. If she believes You're Old is her new name, then she definitely hasn't shown it yet.
― Ol Bertie Dastard, Monday, 14 April 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)
There are a bunch around here but only one is actually cool. So either they're named 'Sunkiss' (the good one) or "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE'. They know who they are. I'm a nice enough guy but you have to draw a line. The bad cats actually have other names but they are all variants of 'GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE'.

Evil? Renaming pets willy-nilly is one of the great small pleasures in life. Hell, I'd do it to children if I thought I could get away with it.

"Evil? Renaming pets willy-nilly is one of the great small pleasures in life. Hell, I'd do it to children if I thought I could get away with it."
I suspect this is why my father gave up on "names" and decided everyone who was a kid (my brother's, me, my friends) should be called "Billy". Also, he insisted on being called Andy. Although his name was George. Or Dad. We also had a lot of cats, so maybe it was confusing for him. Is it ok to mention he was Scottish, so all of this happened in a brogue, which somehow made it socially "okay" for all those kids he might have scared? Also he was short, and USUALLY a wee bit tipsy.
― aimurchie, Monday, 14 April 2008 05:35 (seventeen years ago)
Our cats: Hamish, Georgie, Harry, Tiggy, Oliver, Arco, Oscar, Fred, Mac...that's all I can remember right now. From childhood!
My three; Pudding (lost, presumed forever), her brother Trouble and Monster. Monster doesn't really get called any names. he's just Monster, for some very good reasons.
Trouble gets called troubador, trub, fatty, cooper, coopachoo, choopeechoo in varying "kitty" voices with no discernible effect on his general loviness and yet sense of dignity. Until he rolls over, belly up. Then I call him a slut!
― aimurchie, Monday, 14 April 2008 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

When my cat Death to Christians had kittens, they were all named Bumblebee until they were about a year old, then they got seperate, proper names.
― shieldforyoureyes, Monday, 14 April 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)
OK I love the idea you'd be outside waving a can of Wiskas, shouting "death to christians!" and banging on the tin.=)
― Trayce, Monday, 14 April 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)
Missy has been renamed Pissy and will be until she stops peeing in the corner of the living room. Also Whiffy when she farts.
My sister's now-very-big-and-grown-up cat is still called Kitten, although my Dad always calls him Graham. we are not sure why.
― Thomas, Monday, 14 April 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)
I don't actually do this, I just thought the idea was really funnily when I accidentally called one of our cats "Greg" last night

id be curious to see some studies done abt whether any cats actually know their names at all - in my experience its more of a tone of voice type thing.
― jhøshea, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
hey Abbott is that name from Plague Dogs?
― sleeve, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
me too. my own unscientific studies are inconclusive, but lean towards it being a vocal tone thing.
btw, his name at the shelter is "Yuri" wtf. The other cats will tease him, call him Urea.
― Granny Dainger, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)
Clara is usually just "Clara" or "Clarapuss," but she does get more situation-specific nicknames like Aquapuss (on account of her habitually jumping into the shower to drink up the standing water) and Chickenpuss/Turkeypuss/Salmonpuss/etc. (whenever she shows a comically intense interest in the food we're eating).
The animal shelter called her "Catalina." Stupid animal shelter.
― Paul in Santa Cruz, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
Yuri is great! He is a super-soviet spacecat.
― Oilyrags, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)
animal shelters name cats terrible things. my cat was "jessie" (no offense any jessies out there) but is now Quimby/Quim/Quimb/Quimbot/Quimbat/Quimbotomy + some other stuff when the mood strikes.
― John Justen, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)
"Quim"?
Slang must be different where you are than it is here.
― Oilyrags, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)
you are obviously thinking i treat my cat with respect and dignity
― John Justen, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)
I figured he was referencing skateboard legend Quim Cardona
― Granny Dainger, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
I suppose lots of people (historically, at least) have called their cats variations on pussy...
― Oilyrags, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
STEVIE!
― Z S, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)
Granny, I suggest Stankfinger. Stank or Stanky for short.
Of our cats, Zippy definitely knows his name, but he's had 17 years to learn it. Frosty (11) knows his, but it might be a tone of voice thing. Harvey (7) knows his because he knows to run like hell when he hears us scream it.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)
I plan on naming my first-born human child 'Quim'. My cat is Ollie but there was a time when i called him Comrade Hodger and subsequently, The Comrade.

― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 14 April 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
one of my cats definitely knows her name. i can tell because she used to not know it, when her brain was too small to learn things.
my other cat probably knows it, but he is too deaf to hear it so it doesn't really matter.
― Jordan, Monday, 14 April 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
Granny, in months beginning with the letter "J" your new cat's name is "Slint Practice Tape"
― J0hn D., Monday, 14 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)
Sleeve YES that name IS from The Plague Dogs and you are the first to recognize it!
― Abbott, Monday, 14 April 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)
