There was some joke that I can't remember but the catchline was Mark spits...

Is this it? It's not very good.
"What is the difference between Olympic swimmers and divers? Mark Spitz and Greg Swallows."
Presumably Greg Swallows is/was an Olympic diver.

I was a competitive swimmer in the early 70s and Mark Spitz was "the man." he had the rep as a guy with unlimited natural talent who made it look easy, a opposed to the kind of athlete who has to work ass off.
after the seven gold medals he didn't do much though, a common problem among amateur athletes who aren't great students in sports with no pro future. you finish out your college eligibilty w/no degree and all of a sudden, after years of discipline and direction, you're lost while your peers graduate and start to work.

"greg" is greg louganis, who is gay (and who also hit his head on the way down once, which i saw live on TV as it happened! it was shocking because everyone knew he was the best)
- when very little, i had yellow rubber "mark spitz" branded goggles, which i played with in the bath

Yeah, that joke sounds about right. Laboured I think you'd call it. I'm sure he was in some advert for something but again my memory (and the net) fails me. I mean he was a good looking guy, you'd have thought some after shave ads at least. Although maybe the moustache was a problem.

Why is Abbott thinking about him anyway?
Okay, all makes sense now: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7kPNjkGf4vM

I was thinking about my mom and how she made all these Mark Spitz jokes when I was like five and didn't get them. Now I am almost 25 and I still don't get them.
