I just bought grape tomatoes yesterday!

Heirloom cherry tomatoes are better than candy.

Cherry tomatoes are cherry in shape, whereas grape tomatoes have a more grape-like form.

They look like baby Roma tomatoes and are one of the few passably delicious (albeit overpriced) tomato options from a grocery store's produce section.

After years of producing flavorless, armor-thick impostors, commercial tomato growers now have a big hit. Grape tomatoes are sold widely, from Wal-Mart to Sutton Place Gourmet. Aside from Florida, they're being grown in Mexico and up and down the East and West coasts, making them available all year long. Six L's, for example, farms grape tomatoes in Virginia in the summer, working its way down the coast to Florida by the end of October.

And their ubiquitousness has changed the landscape of the supermarket produce aisle.

Grapes "have killed the cherry tomato business," says Charles Lester, produce buyer for Giant Food, who added that the chain "very seldom" carries cherry tomatoes anymore. They're "quickly becoming the tomato of choice," says Craig Muckle, spokesman for Safeway, which sells 10 times more grape than cherry tomatoes.

With a higher sugar content than many cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes have become fast food, finger food and kid-friendly. They have a long shelf life, and unlike most cherry tomatoes, can be eaten neatly in one bite, making them a squirt-free choice for social occasions.

"If I'm having people in for drinks, I'll serve them as part of a raw vegetable plate," says a woman at the Magruder's at 5626 Connecticut Ave. NW, as she adds a pint of grape tomatoes to her shopping basket. "I love them. They have a wonderful flavor."

Grape tomatoes are a routine purchase for us. I like them, although there are certain uses for which I prefer tarter cherry tomatoes.

the local cherry tomatoes here are so fuckin good this year that they are giving grape tomatoes a run for their money

Oh man, grape tomatoes are one of those things that if I buy them, I end up eating them all in the same day.
